Hello fellow Kaleuns.
The crew of U-23 is proud to announce that it sunk its first ship in their real time patrol (no TC). Exactly 84 hours after leaving Wilhelmshaven on November 1st 1939 our sonar officer confirmed a contact we were notified by BdU. A mercheant at the eastern British coast, 100km off Hartlepool.
I quickly decided to set an intercept course, finding a 2000 ton small freighter sailing under the British flag. Not the best one can hope for but neither the worst. I did not doubt it was a British ship, which was confirmed soon enough after we made visual contact (due to some fog sight was limited to about 4km).

To make it short - all went according to plan; we got of a shot from our bow in a perfect position about 800 meters away. A single torpedo that sunk her within a few minutes.

We made sure the surviving crew was supplied with the necessary goods to make it to the coast and then departed.

Not very spectectular but after 80 hours in the Nordsee without a single sighting this sure was fun for us all and rose our spirits. We are proceeding up the English coast around Scapa Flow to our designated patrol grid in the Atlantic.
Happy hunting fellow Kaleuns!
Wilhelm Bosch U-23 out.

Haha, over one year in real time. That would be really kind of ... sick. Actually I will probably use some kind of TC later on; once I'm out of torpedos and heading back probably. But for now I'll keep it going at least until I reach my patrol grid.
Although Intelligence is just reporting that there is a convoy north of us, heading in our direction. It might be a short patrol after all...

You are about 5 days ahead of me on the same course. I am headfing for AM 32 (at no TC VIIC) on my second patrol. Whats with this shallow depth? I was bored and put the crew through surface shooting to check the weapons but it is hard to do crash dive pratice at a depth of 13 m. 60 hours from Wil and no sightings. Keep me posted when you go off no TC. I will try to outlast you if my crew doesnt throw me over board from lack of activity.

i tried doing a 1x to 2x patrol... nearly painted the walls with my brains... whats the point of playing a videogame to pass the time when your already playing a videogame rofl
i dunno, for a short coastal patrol with a II-D maybe... but no transatlantic journey's for me

Way to go snwcrsh!!!
... and as I told Wratt about three years ago when people gave him hell for enjoying 1x TC patrols...
... to HELL with the nay-sayers!!! Sink 'em all.
1x TC is great for getting housework and reading done too.
Just get yourself a baby monitor so you can leave the screen here and there... and do what makes you feel good...
... SAIL MAN SAIL!!!
(Now I must leave for RL work.:damn: )
You certainly have more patience than I do.....

It's really not as much patience as you think. Most of the time I'm doing other things. Although no housework, as Kapitän Lehmann suggested (thanks for the thumbs up though!).
Unfortunately I have to abandon my game for a week as I am out of town for a business trip on monday. But I'll keep you updated on my dull passage...

You have my admiration and respect Kaleun!
excellent work, I would do a 1X TC patrol from start to finish if i could ever find the time. Unfortunately my work is too demanding! - and i would have to break it up into various save games. :nope:

Sailing as low as 256x is usually enough to put me in a state that would qualify me for therapy and medication. Kudos to you, Kaleun!

I've started a no-TC patrol from Lorient in 1940. I thought pitching it later might mean there'll be more action eventually. What precipitated this momentous decision was the arrival in the post of both volumes of Blair's 'Hitler's U-Boat War'. It's a really weird feeling sitting in almost total darkness with SHIII running, headphones on, reading about the events on which the sim is based by the light of a small USB lamp. Talk about immersion! Now if only I can find a way of making the room rock gently from side to side...:hmm: Maybe a glass or two of Scotch might help...

Now you know how the Grey Wolves got started!
My first patrol EVER in SH3 (when I was a total n00b) was a 1xTC patrol. I lasted four days before I started modding... found some issue or another that needed fixing...
Tis the road to ruin... but a fun one.:arrgh!:

Well, after looking at the screenshots I have a silly question: if the point of playing 1x is realism, what's the point of not playing at 100%? Seems to kind of defeat the purpose.

Not for me, not at all. I don't play TCx1 to simulate realism. I do it because I enjoy SH3 being a permanent distraction all the time.
My realism settings vary from mission to mission. Standard of course is everything limited, real damage, reload, sensors, etc. Only thing I use is Cameras (Not for identification but for fun) and "god's eye" map. The latter is not as helpful with GWX as in stock as you still need to identify the ships. I use it because I'm often distracted by RL work and don't have time for "micro measurements".
But as I said before, I play with settings that suits me. And this is only partly realism, mostly it's fun. I use TCx1 but on the other hand I cheated with my crew *shrug*
PS: What I don't quite get, what does your question has to do with the screenshots?

Even if it was for realism, wouldn't "NO TC" be just like any other feature? Like you may have WO assistance off but map contact update ON... so, I don't think it spoils that aspect either.
Congratulations! We all wanted to do the same at some point!

No matter how you play it... stock or modded to the max, 100% realism settings to 0%, or 1X TC for a full patrol to making a torpedo run at 64x TC, the only truly important question that matters with SH3 is, "Are you having fun?".
Sink 'em all, Kaleus!:arrgh!:

Graf I couldn't agree more. (for some reason this reminds me about xkcd; full credits go to xkcd.com -- visit his site if you don't know it, it's a great if not the best webcomic there is! (warning: quite geeky))

@Kpt Lehmann: I can imagine. You've got time to think 'now if that worked like this instead....' etc. Hopefully, I'll get into modding at some point, but for now (and this is another reason I decided to do a 1x) I want to get to grips with OLC's excellent GUI, learn how to measure speed, distance & heading and ulimately put my own firing solutions together. I think that should keep me busy for a while. :D
@thread: I'm with snwcrsh on this, it's great to have a permanent distraction. That said, I've got a few careers running now and they all have different realism settings. I see SH as being a sim first and a game second. Single missions are great if I want to go and sink some tonnage, but I'm coming to the view that it's all practise for the day when I go for 1x TC and 100% RL. That's the goal. But that challenge is what I find enjoyable, obviously other people like to play it differently. But as someone pointed out here, the bottom line is to enjoy doing it, whatever that may involve. Are you having fun? Nuff said.

Problem is, if i play at 1x TC, I'll probably end saying "what the hell am i doing here ?!" and go enlist on some real ship right away to get a better feeling of "1x TC" :hmm:
Hehe, make sure you bring your notebook so you can still play GWX at TCx256 if it gets too boring :)

Since ever I found out about custom emblems I knew my boat would have a Cthulhu warning sign.
So much about my love for realism :)

I am with Knipper on trying to master OLC's GUI (may replace sex its so great). No TC gives me time to think and read my notes on GUI to line up the great shot. I have praticed in the academy. Even though I try to be true to the game I still save game prior to an attack so if I screw up GUI targeting I can go to my save game and try again. Lot better then starting a new career when trying to learn. After I get GUI targeting down if I die I die.

Without a doubt the most enjoyable patrols I've ever done were in 1x.
Congratulations, Kaleun! :yep:
