I found the target map a great targeting resource, but had a few questions about how to use it more effectively.

1. There's a green line that goes from my sub to the target. It changes whenever I alter the torp spread. Why do the fish sometimes miss when I put the spread line on the target even though the white 'X' is on the ship?

2. If the white 'X' is ahead of the ship, does it mean the calculated range is too close?

3. In what direction should the white line that goes out from the white 'X' point? Should it be parallel or cross the target?

I use Trigger Maru so I don't get spread lines, x's, ship silhouettes or any of that. I get information much like that a real submarine would plot.

If I remember right, the x is the target point of the TDC/PK. You want that x to end up on top of your target. If is is on the torpedo track line crossing the target but closer or further away, your range is wrong. If your PK is activated and you observe the line for as long as the torpedo will take to get to the target and the line still intersects the target, you will hit anyway, in spite of the error.

If it drifts off the target in that amount of time you'll waste a torpedo. Then you can do one of two things: correct the range or alter the speed so the track line stays on the target for as long as you need to hit it. You might need some trial and terror to accomplish this.

With Trigger Maru you'd better just make sure all your parameters are right. It demands more precision than the stock game, by far. That is because it has arcade features.:rotfl:(inside joke from another thread)

The green line is the path the torpedo will take if fired at that exact moment, with the range/speed/AOB you have entered for the target. The white X is where the position keeper is showing the ship to be; if the X is not on the target them something is incorrect. Since a torpedo must aim farther ahead to hit the target when it's on slow speed than on fast speed, changing torp speed will alter the path. As to why torpedoes miss, assuming all your data is correct, the torpedo will only hit if the target continues on the exact same heading at the exact same speed for the entire run of the torpedo. If the target speeds up, slows down, or turns even slightly, it can put the target ship out of the path of the torpedo and you miss. The closer you are, the less time there is for a reaction and so the higher your chances of hitting.
