Harpoon tips in 688i

So I have been having some issues with the harpoons in the game. About 1 out of three actually hit the target. Most of the time the just fly right by even though I have taken the time set the seeker and destruct range. They fly right at the target and right when you would expect the report that it has hit, it just flys right by. I am having a horrible hit/miss ratio on using this weapon and have almost decide to not use them, even though I know they are required in later missions. Any and all help would be appreciated! It is possible that you are not getting a good fix. I learned by using auto and shifting to manual. Then study replay.

That might explain it as I dont know how to get a fix. What do you have to do in order to get a fix? How do you go from auto to manual? As you can tell this is obviously one of my problems

In options there are 3 cheats Sonar Expert, TMA plot coordinator, and Fire Control weapons. If you check them you will get help. Also in the crew screen you have 3 crewmen to aid you. As you advance they will gain skill 0-4. I found when trying to learn these all helped. TMA is difficult, especially when you first start out.
The first MISSION One Step at a Time is an excellent Tutorial. I don't know if you have an manual or not, might find one e-bay and some disc have them installed. I have an original manual, and they are hard to come buy.
