View Full Version : Marshall Islands Binocular Orange Star

Hi,

I've been assigned to patrol the marshall islands on my first career outing. I've sailed "into" the orange star on the map, but my mission objective still says "patrol the islands" as opposed to the usual update to "engage enemy shipping" or words to that effect.

I have a feeling that even if I find something to sink its going to fail me on the mission. Anyone come across this?

thanks
dave

You need to patrol within one hundred miles of the icon for a constant 48 hours. If you're not a purist and you want to save gas, navigate to the icon and hit 'All Stop' sit there for 48 hours at a high TC and the icon will gray out. You may need to use the mouse wheel to zoom in and out a bit to help the game update the icon status.

You need 48 hrs on station to complete and dont save and come back
or you reset the clock I suspect.

Thanks both. It just changed status to complete after I hung around.

So this mission genre is just to be there? Am I supposed to RTB now and take another mission?

Cheers
Dave

Yeah. Never anything at the Marshalls. :D

Ah well, never mind. I hit F5 to get outside and listen to the thunder and it crashed to desktop. Thats with 1.4 and no mods installed.

Its good when it works, but its not really what I would call polished - esp. after the time and 4 patches worth of fixe :-(

Ah well, its all about perseverence I guess.

I must admit, I have yet to have a CTD or a single issue with this game...and I'm running a load of mods.

Sure, I can believe that.

I'm usually very strict about what gets on my PC. I keep a "virgin" disk image (taken with Acronis) and restore back to it for fresh installs - so I have a "gaming build", a "working build", a "trading build" (day job). That usually means I dont get half or any of the grief with software that others harp on about. But I was in such a rush to get playing this that I dumped it on my general build.

I think when I get an hour or so I will put it where it rightly belongs.

I'm glad this community is here, I'm sure I'm about to get grabbed-by-the-proverbial-round-objects by this game. But at the moment I'm not quite immersed (pardon the pun) enough due to feelings of not having the information I think the manual should have provided.

But it's fun. :-)

Dave.

The manual should be thrown out or placed at the bottom of a bird cage. This game patched to 1.4 and modded to taste is excellent in my view...and that's a testament to the dedicated Devs who went above and beyond for the game, and also the superb modders, one of whom is sadly no longer with us, who continue to do excellent work on the game. :D

Like TDK1044 no CTD either and really pushing the envelope with the amount of mods in there.

Here's how I handle the patrol missions:

1. Zoom all the way in on the star emblem on the map.
2. Select the compass tool on your map.
3. Place the center of the circle (click once) directly between the two bottom points on the star.
4. Zoom out until you are able to make the radius of the circle 50 nm in size (I patrol within 50nm on stock SH4 ... not 100 nm).
5. Place the circle (click a second time) on the map.

Now just patrol around inside the circle, making sure to stay inside of it for 48 hours. After 48 hours, if you still have 7 torpedoes left, radio in to base with a status report, and you'll get another mission. You can always RTB if you so choose.

100 miles is too far. Use 50 mile radius. Wish people would stop offering that figure. Don't worry, you don't have to sink anything. Marshalls is no man's land.

One thing regarding the CTDs: At one point I was getting them regularly, so I turned down the graphics settings some, and I haven't had one since. I think maybe my video card was overheating.

I have an ATI x1950 and play at 1650x1080.

Once again, thanks to all for your invaluable help.

My addiction is growing :-)

I think I want to trade in my boat on Georgian Bay for a sub.

Cheers,
Dave.

Woa.. The 1950 was over-heating? That thing has a very nice two speed fan in it. Give it more room to breath out the back and maybe add a side fan blowin on its intake so it's not totally depandant on already heated case air.

Those Ati cards run very hot you know. I haven't checked how far SH4 takes them, but with Armed Assault I've seen my dual X1950 Pros top out at 96 degrees celsius without any stability problems. Yes, I have a better case ventilation now :)

My bet is the CTDs were related to running out of memory, since SH4 uses lots of it(both graphics and "normal" ram), and I've experienced similar problems myself. If the problems were due to heat, then most likely you would see all kinds of weird things on the screen before the system would lock completely, not just ctd.
