I've noticed a few comments on these SH4 forums about IL2 and I'm wondering how many SH4 community members are or have been Flight Simmers as well:

I used to play lots of flightsims. Including IL-2 - online as part of D13-th squad. Not these days, though its getting tempting to join some friends for online Lock On.

I'm not very good.

MSFS 9 (aka 2004) mostly because there are loads of Golden Age and WWI add-ons not tweaked for GenX.
Also, HOP (Heroes of the Pacific). Have tried PF but prefer HOP, little less real, but a little more interesting.
I've run several MSFS over the years, 95, 98, 2000.
Subsimming often seems slow at times......:hmm:

There were a lot of sims before IL2 . . . I was very active in Jane's F18 and EAW.

Did every FS since it's release waaaay back when.
Fly!
Falcon 1.0-3.0

Started seriously with EAW, played that for years, then got B17 II, played that & EAW until IL2 Sturmovik was released, bought it and been playing since.

I started from the beginning of il-2 days and flew for over 3 years on the D.E.Y. squad (Dead Eyes). Had a lot of fun and a great bunch of guys, they still play daily on 2 of the best server sights for il-2. I really loved it but just started to loose interest after years of playing, then i moved to online Lock-on and that was a blast as well, but, it is porked on a lot of levels concerning f-15 amrams and other things that i decided i may pick it up when BlackShark comes out sometime this year. If you have any questions on either il-2 or lockon just ask. I saw that il-2 has out the 1945 series, is this all disks in one now, otherwise you had to download a bunch of disks and patches, i would be lost now after all this time.

I cut my teeth on Flight Sims. Any one else here remember Sid Meyer's (yes, the Civilization Sid Meyer...) flight sim Pacific Ace?. Have played about every flight sim since to some degree. My first sub sim was Silent Service for the Atari 800. I had to buy an Atari drive to play it as the ATR8000 kit I had at the time would not work with the copy protection. Ah the original Silent Service, Railroad Tycoon and Pirates. Back when Computer games had more steak than sizzle ;)

It started with B17, too. Then it went a long way. Currently IL2/FB and Falcon 4.0/Allied Force are my favs. If you don't narrow for flying in atmosphere, you could add the X-Wing Series to my current favs.

Your list is lacking the father of modern combat flight sims, Falcon 4

I've been "simming" both F4 and IL2 since they were published. Today's F4 is quite far from the original, published in 1998(?). Extensive modding has been possible due to a leaked source code, and hence they have been able to touch issues like the graphics engine, something SH3&4 modders can currently only dream about.

My HD houses currently:
Falcon 4 Allied Force
Open Falcon
IL-2 1946

Jane's WW2 Fighters
Fighter Squadron: Screamin Demons over Europe- Did lots of work on the flight models and some damage modelling on the community mods
CFS2
IL2/Pacific Fighters/Il2 1946
Battle of Britain II: Wings of Victory

One's I still play occasionally- Il2 1946, BOB2

Why WWII sims- cuz they ruined aircraft when they took the propellers off 'em:D

Well if you ask me, the kings out there are:

Falcon 4.0
European Air War
Red Baron 2

Says a little something about how I view the ideal simulation. No I'm not talking about the bugs on release :D

Of course, there are many other nominees ...

I'm a pilot in real life, and as part of my 'studies' i've flown just about every sim since AOTP :know: (that's Aces of the Pacific).

Currently IL2:1946, Wings over Vietnam (carrier ops at Yankee station  ), occasionally Microsoft FS9 to get ready for a real life checkflight :rotfl: .

I've been playing them since I was old enough to use a computer. Though I wouldn't exactly consider myself a hardcore flight simmer.

AOT Pacifc/Europe
Janes WWII Fighters/FA-18
CFS 1, 2, and 3
EAW
B-17
BoB II

Used to play Falcon 4 in its various incarnations, including Allied Force.
Don't have the time nowadays to devote to such a complex sim.

I still play IL-2 however I haven't picked it up in awhile.... maybe tonight.:yep:

The mission in PF where you are the IJN trying to locate and bomb a US sub sounds fun.:arrgh!:

When I was 12, my dad bought me 2 computer games for his Atari ST: Sublogic Flight Simulator 2 and Epyx Sub Battle Simulator. Ever since then it's been simulations and strategy games almost exclusively :)

For a few years I was in an online squad that flies IL-2, but somehow I never really got into IL-2, or online flying. I prefer single player campaigns, and this seems to be a weak point in titles like IL-2 or Lomac.

Sims I fly now:
- Battle of Britain 2
- MiG Alley (I can't let it this oldie go)
- Falcon 4AF
- Wings over Vietnam
- FS9

I'll pick up B-17II again, the flying itself was a bit of a disappoitment, but the campaign and the atmosphere during missions was excellent.

Reporting in. I'm more of a combat flight simmer than a naval one. Used to play IL-2 Sturmovik a lot until some bright minds decided to place unrealistic jets in 1946 which killed off all excitement for me. I'm eagerly awaiting the same developers Battle of Britain sim. I heard it'll give rigs a run for their money. I started off with Jane's IAF (still the best for me), then MSCFS 2, MiG Alley, Lock-On, and IL-2 Series.

I still have Janes WWII Fighters on my current machine, and MS Combat Flight Sim, although I haven't fired up either in some time now.

My all time favorite flight sim was Janes USAF though.

I also used to have DiD's F22 ADF and F22 Total Air War, but gave those CDs away some time ago. And I flew B-17: The Mighty Eighth too.

It's been AGES since I played a Flight Simulator! Used to love them though, especially the Jane's series: F15, USAF, F/A18, WWII Fighters...great games! A couple of broken joysticks can attest to that

Coincidentally, a friend of mine let me borrow his FSX yesterday, but I still haven't installed it. First I had to clear up my crammed-up hard drive, then I discovered (the hard way) that I need SP2 to run it...which I haven't! And with no internet connection at home, all I could do was wait until I got to work today and download from here. Which I did...the english version, which will not install on greek Windoze :damn: I'm on a roll! :rotfl:

IL-2: 1946.

It's been a few months but it's my favorite flight sim and I tend to jump around a lot in different aircraft in quick missions. I'm still doing a Zero pilot career.

I flew il-2 PF quite a bit. Offline, and online mostly on Zekes vs Wildcats as well as the odd coop.

I too was annoyed at 1946. It wasn't the inclusion of the fantasy BS planes alone that pissed me off, it was that the same guys who put it out were responsible for PF in the first place, and they did such a godawful job of it. I hadn't played in a while until I found that some of the most glaring issues could and were being taken care of by the players.

Now I'm interested in il-2 again since I can fly over New Georgia, Vella Lavella, and Bouganville.

Fondest memories of DiD EF2000, Microprose EAW and the IL2 series.

I'm currently only active in FS9 (2004) and Battle of Britain II, but IL-2 and Falcon 4 are only inactive due to lack of time on my part - I'm probably no less, if not more of a fan of those two. Maybe they just traditionally eat more of my time, that's why I avoid em for now :88). I'll also take another crack at LOMAC sometime - I just never managed to get into it the last 3 times I tried, but my systems also handled it less than ideally.

My first was Microprose F19 Stealth Fighter back in '87. Messed about with F18 and MSFS and then got into EAW for a few years whilst it was being modded. Now using IL2/1946 and BoBII. Just seem to like the WWII fighters better than the high tech modern stuff.

Must give the WWI planes a go, might just have to regress to the oldest form of aerial combat.

I played AH ages ago, then Warbirds from when it was $2/hr. When my wife was a resident (and never home) I racked up multi hundred dollar bills every month.

Still, cheaper than bars :D

I'm sometimes playing First Eagles plus Expansion Pack I...
Sometimes you'll find me online flying Il-2 1946 on www.warbirdsofprey.org (http://www.warbirdsofprey.com) (on their "Spits vs 109s" server) as [UGT]Wallenberg either in a fighter or busy in a level bombing raid calculating release angles with a slide rule ;)
Rarely flying also on X-Plane 8.50 in my selfmade 1912 Etrich Taube (available on www.x-plane.org) or on Richthofen's Skies (a Targetware mod)

I usually play Pacific Fighters or the original IL2. Online sometimes.

Also Wings over Vietnam / Strike Fighters.
