Ahoy shipmates!

I am new to the Silent Hunter family, and new to sub sims with the exception of playing around with 688 Attack Sub years ago :-)

I bought SH4 online this weekend (from IGN), and dloaded the product.

I wondered if anyone else has got the game via this method, because I wondered how they went on playing without having an instruction book!

I've played around with the game, but I have a feeling not having a manual is going to be a big problem.

Cheers for your help.
Dave

The manual should be in the Support folder of your SH4 installation. Beware that it has plenty of mistakes though.

Ah thanks!

I slipped up on the install and it ended up in the wrong place, so I didnt even see there was a support folder associated with the software.

Great!

I will heed your warning...

Welcome Dave :D

Be sure to install latest patch.

Then go to SH4 forum and browse thru the posts and gain info to get a good understanding of the game.

This will help in getting a better understanding of the game and it's probs and the fixes.

Have fun and enjoy.

Thanks for the welcome guys.

I've had a read through the manual, and to be honest I think I was better off before I did! I do have the 1.4 patch applied.

I have a couple of questions if I may? I am playing a CAREER quest out of Pearl Harbor. I have set the timeline to 1941, so I'm off to Honshu to sink shipping.

The sub allows me to go to the Radar control station, but even on the surface the option to turn the sets on and off are greyed out and I only get sonar contacts.

I would imagine that US subs didnt have on board radar in 1941. Is this the case (in which case, given the attention to detail in the rest of the game, I am suprised I can still go to the radar crew station)? Or should I infact have a radar and i'm doing something wrong.

Secondly, when I travel huge distances at big time compression, I am sometimes attacked by a plane which gets a run on me before (or immediately after!) the time compression returns to 1. Do my guys have poor Mk 1 eyeballs or again, is this a game issue?

Finally, does anyone know a good reference about crew management? Is it just a case of check the stats and drag and drop? Or do I have other issues to consider?

Thanks in advance if anyone has the time to respond to one or more of these issues.

p.s Call me mad - but I am finding the idea of dedicating one PC to SH4 and running it in real time, over days and weeks, whilst I am at home working - maybe sleeping with my headphones on if the wifey doesnt kill me. Being woken up at 3am by a radar contact in the middle of the night sounds like fun. I think I'm about to start obsessing over a "game", and its been a long time since I did that :-)

Before using surface radar you have to purchase it with renown, as well depending upon the year, it may not be available.

Are you using any mods, I know with Trigger there is ample time to take action with planes. SHould be similar with stock :hmm:, the time compression.

I think this is a first with SH4 , seen it done with 3 :o Good luck to you, especially with the huge expanses of the Pacific. By the way, welcome to SUBSIM

I have taken the liberty of making reservations for you to attend WernerSobe's Advanced School of Submarine Attack Tactics (WASSAT) over at WASSAT (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=118923) Werner has three tutorial videos there, two on using the Torpedo Data Computer and Position Keeper properly for manual targeting and a third tutorial on how to shoot your target using sonar only, having never seen the target. Those videos really jumpstarted my game.

Later in the thread, which is worth the time it takes to read all the posts, you'll find my seminar on the Dick O'Kane method, which is a blatant ripoff of standard U-Boat techniques adapted for the American TDC and submarine. If Werner's links are broken, I have hosted the videos with a link on page 5.

As far as evasion skills, we don't have a thread that just covers that. The subject comes up once in awhile when people are complaining about Trigger Maru. Just to summarize Ducimus (quit hitting me!!! I'll tell AVG!!!! ...again!) you can't expect to just hit silent running, duck below the thermal layer and go read a book. Thermal layers are like listening through a wall. You can hear the voices, just not as well. The thermal layer just makes noises from below less loud.

Look around SUBSIM and there's no telling what you'll find. I can tell you that no manual will ever teach you what the captains around here will. Welcome aboard and leave some targets for us..:arrgh!:
