Ok, I'm new to this and I've searched thru these forums and read what I am supposed to do, but it ain't werkin'!
I've got SH4, upgraded to v1.4, I'm learning, so I'm just running single missions and war patrols for now to figure this stuff out. I'm in War Patrol (from start menu) and on the "Lifeguard" run. I get out there fine, and find the blue 'chutes, see them bobbing in the water, but for heaven's sake, what do I have to do to get the rescue square to light up? :damn: I'm looking thru the TBT (which doesn't scroll mag with my mouse wheel, though the periscopes do) and I can see them, but as I get what I think would be close to them, I don't have enough down tilt on the TBT, they disappear under it, nor does there appear to be any way to select/highlight anything. The first icon lower left just gets me to the bridge, the second activates the TBT. I don't think I've ever just seen binoculars anywhere, is that where I'm going wrong? If so, where are they and how do you get them?
Thanks for the rant, but I've uninstalled and re-installed several times trying to get the mouse wheel to change the mag on the TBT or find the binocs to no avail.
Step by step for the idiot, please! :know:

If I'm understanding you right. The TBT is set to one magnification. To get a regular binoc view you need to be on the bridge then use 'Tab' or scroll wheel in effect to use binoculars.
The TBT has a limited vertical travel. The regular binoc view has full vertical travel.
The binoc view allows you to designate targets such as ships, planes, etc.

OK, I think I get it, when you are on the bridge, what you see is with your eyes, so to speak, then you just "zoom your eyes" to get the binocs. Thanks, I'll give it a try!

Welcome to SUBSIM  Baywing

Good luck with it  Also, be sure to check out some of the great guides in the stickies section, as well the search option can be your friend. Lots of great info in older threads.

I think it's been identified correctly you were trying to use the TBT (UZO) to designate and get close to the smoking targets. Use F5, then TAB which brings up the binoc graphics and your zoom controls will work. Best to get next to the targets at lowest zoom. However, the UZO can help you identify smoke targets that are further away. Once you have identified the direction, use the binocs and move there.

Wonder if you can rescue Nip pilots you've shot down...I occasionally have one survive and parachute down...

Thanks everyone. I tried it last night and things worked fine, though it's tough to get 'em on the boat at night. Don't want prisoners, they are nothing but trouble.
I figured by what I was reading from the forum search that I was doing something wrong, or not doing something I should have. It seems that SH4 may be making an assumption that the user is familiar with II or III in that some of the basic how-to-dos aren't covered or well explained. I've seen several errors between what the included booklet says and the printed keyboard card shows, the printed card seems more accurate. Not complaining, it's like that everywhere, just makes it tougher to learn/enjoy.

Use the manual as a coaster, door jam, paper to start the wood stove.....
This place is your manual :yep:

Guess I'll just shoot 'em then...instead of letting them suffer a slow death due to hypothermia/drowning...make it quick and relatively painless...that would be the humane thing to do, right? :p

Guys, guys, don't go down the shoot'em route. That way lies disgrace, discharge and dishonour. It is against the Geneva convention, so I have been reliably informed after my last machine gunning escapade. At least the guys I gunned were on fire!

I didn't say shoot 'em, I said you can't take prisoners. Let the bongin sharks have em.
