Alright I'm just a bit Peeved. I've had 2 careers go down the toilet now. I save the game multiple times while on patrol but when I try to reload any of the saves outside the initial leaving port game, SH4 crashes. Please, Please don't tell me the only time you can save the game and be able to reload is in port!. There is NO WAY I'll ever be able to complete a patrol in a single session. I'm running RFB, RSRD, A HUD mod, the sound effects V8 and "Depth charges in the water".
Edit: Ok, I disabled all mods but RFB and RSRD and The new Gato Interior Mod and started yet another career. I've been able to save and load in the patrol zone but I've not sunk anything yet. This corrupted save thing is rather frustrating.

Did you install any mods during your previous careers? If you did, this is probably why those save games won't load.

That is what I am thinking as well, you can get away with some graphic type mods not being in port, but just to be on the safe side, be in port when activating,
de-activating stuff. Also, make sure all of your mods are 1.4 compatible, and what you have installed are not conflicting with one another.

Both previous posters are right. In addition to that you must start a new career after installing RSRDC. Upgrading from one RSRDC version to another is ok without uninstalling(though you must be at port while doing that).

Ok, here is what I did.
The first career I started with RFB,RSRD and couple of HUD and Sound mods loaded. I started the patrol, sank 3 ships, saving the game numerous times. I took a break and came back a few nights later. I installed the new Gato Graphis mod and tried to load one of my save games. None would load SH4 crashed each time. I then uninstalled the gato graphics mod and tried to load the save games. Same problem, each crashed.
At this point I reloaded the Gato Graphics mod and started a NEW career. Again I made it to the patrol zone and sank 2 ships, saving about 5 times. I took a break and came back a few hours later and tried to load my save games. Same thing, each crashed. I had not changed a thing. VERY frustrating :damn:
I then uninstalled ALL mods and just re-installed RFB,RSRD and the Gato Graphics Mod. I started a NEW career and sailed to the patrol zone. I've saved a few times and been able to reload without the game crashing. One of the other mods must have done something to made saving the game ourside of port not possible.
I'll try this for a bit and see what happens.

You know, the secret swearing doesn 't get you any more quality help than if you avoided it.

Yes, sorry about the WTF. It was late at night and I was fairly peeved at having 2 careers get trashed. I've waited along time to get into this sim as I really enjoy the subject matter and the save game problem was rather frustrating.
I seem to have it behind me now. I sank a freighter last night, saved the game and was able to reload it. I think that the problem was with one of the 2 sound mods I had installed. The first thing that happens when the save loads is the report "Engines all stop sir" and the game seemed to be crashing right there. The lesson learned is that after you load a new mod you should go to sea, save and see if you can reload. Better to find out if you have a problem right away than before you've sunk 20000 tons of shipping or score a big warship and not be able to reload.

The same thing is happening to me.... I'm going to have to backtrack in my career. I have installed no mods and the game was working fine.
If I can give up more details... I noticed the problem when I tried to load a save while the game was still running of me just about to fire some torps at a convoy. First of all, the convoy disappeared (reappearing several nautical miles away, and without any sunken ships... which was weird since I sank two of them already). The savegames work if you don't close the game, but with major screwups. Positions of ships don't seem to be saved, except their general location. I tested it several times to be sure.
Something in the career files screws up, I believe, because no save after that point in that campaign works properly. I tried going back to old saves where I was near enemy convoys, saving them and loading them, as well as quitting and loading... and THOSE work fine. But any save after the problems started happening is just guaranteed not to work. Saving at dock works, and that's really just about it.
I'm going to backtrack to the last cruise I had before everything bugged up, and try to see if, after docking and accepting a new mission, the game bugs up again.

I'd also mention that when uninstalling mods (I assume you are using JSGME), it is important to remove them in the exact opposite order that you installed them (since some mods write to the same area or files, so to be sure that JSGME rolls back properly, the order is important).

Oddly enough it seems to have sorted itself out after a few cruises where I didn't save till I got back to port.
I have better luck with saves if I save only while on the surface and out of visual range of any land or any other vessels.
