View Full Version : GWX2 1944 career: That didn't last long!

Well, I made an error in my revamp of the GWX2 RND.mis file so had to make a complete new one. With so little to change in this great add on fortunately for me the one thing I know well is the only thing that could (IMO) be improved upon.
So I started a career in each year to make sure.
Then I decided after all checked out to do a 1944 career because they moved the start to the beginning of the year and that gave enough time to have a decent live span.
I started in Brest and left at night at high speed and as soon as the air raid alert sounded I went to snorkel as I did not want to waste ammo. Most excellent raid.
I was going up and down like a porpoise through the Bay heading for DH62 never seeing a ship and getting down before any aircraft spotted me. Tedious but real.
The fact I had to snorkel so much and make higher speed left me without a safe margin of fuel so after my stint in the ordered zone I headed for U-488 to resupply.
But, good luck had me run into a convoy although it was raining and night.
I snuck in but was detected and it seems they had as much trouble finding me as I did a target.
I could hear them even see their search lights but getting range and bearing to make an attack was all but impossible.
Finally the two search lights from a tanker allowed me to position myself and I disabled him with two fish then finished him with an third. I fired a FAT into the convoy based on sound bearings as a DE made a run at me causing slight damage me being in between the cans all lucky like.
I fired my one homi and would later regret wasting it as I went to 150 meters.
Classic 30 months of intense 100% SH3 playing Kaleunmanship. I was guessing the two yanks' every move and except for one good spread and minor flooding I slipped away.
A fat 11K tanker in Feb 44 was a good prize and I headed for U-488.
I never made it.
I ran into a Hunter killer group that was not very impressed with all that Kaleunmanship and they seem to know what I was doing before I did it
It was one run doing damage after another destroying the forward batteries was the thing that hurt as I needed to stay at med speed to keep from dropping and was always pumping to keep from flooding so one run after another and even blowing ballast did nothing. I was all prepared to surrender and apply for US food stamps but I guess these yanks weren't liberals on immigration so sent me to the dreaded black screen.
Point??? It felt much like reading Iron Coffins in 44 then it became one.

Nice work GWX team it was excellent

(PS, my RND.mis editing; changing escorts in convoys to higher crew rating (3 mim) or adding more escorts (5/43 on) or changing which ones had nothing to do with the above. I have not changed the HK groups)

1944 Down under GWX 1.3 :D

No Idea as yet in GWX 2.0 :hmm:

Still in 1940 at the moment. :arrgh!:

1940 is like you are the New England Patriots playing a Pee Wee league team of ten year olds.

1944 is like you being the Pee Wee league team playing the New England Patriots:rotfl:

Both are the Happy Days for one side and miserable for the other.

My point was although only one patrol the experience was like reading about 1944 from U-Boat accounts.
It should be 99% impossible and does look that way to me so I am very happy about the correctness.

Now, is there a way to survive (100%)???????????????
I was thinking trying Norway and playing like a pansy:hmm: !!!

is it possible to surrender your boat in GWX? in sh3commander when you exit after being destroyed it gives you the option... but says all yer crew is dead

My first and actual career in GWX 2.0 is in 1944. Started in Fev. Always wanted to try to exit St.Nazaire with the order of tranfer the boat to Bergen and do the voyage, under sea almost all the time.
I now patroling east the Azores in july of 1944. Began the patrol today, it's my 4th. So far so good, first real mission (that was my second patrol, my first, was cancel because my boat wasn't in order, electrical faults and the shipward wanted to install the new radar detector...just kidding, just want to get the promotion and then do the first patrol) manage to get inside a convoy, sunk a carier and a large tanker. Got way because the lead escort stop in front of the burning tanker and remain there, like was rescuing the survivors. Manage to intercept another convoy and only sunk one of the side escorts, because it would be the most dangerous one if I was detected, also, was the clooser one.
Last patrol, a destroyer got me, and after a 2 hours of laying depth charges above me, the damns hedgehogs and a few charges got close and I decided that was time to use the falke IV torpedo in the rear tube. Scored another destroyer and received the Iron Cross 2º class.
Not bad for a young Oberleutnant zur See in 1944...

In a nutshell... if you want an interesting life in SH3 with GWX...

Start your career in 1943... and feel the change go from 'bad' to 'worse.'

Everybody plays early war...

'cuz they are CHICKEN! LOL! ;) :arrgh!:

Oh no, Herr Lehmann, it's not about chickens, it's about experiencing whole the story. When I'm sunk/retired, I'll start my next career on the date as if it was the next patrol of the previous one. I hope I'll ever get to '44. :)

Meh, I play my career backwards, cos I is hardcore.:smug:
Just set your 'days in base' to -28.

LMAO

j/k

I'm glad we've hit the sweet spot in terms of 'deadliness' in late war. It makes the experience and accomplishment all the more satisfying.

Frankly I had to mod GWX1.3 a lot to get it as difficult as GWX2 is now so while I enjoyed the horrendous action by myself everyone now gets to join the fun.
I started almost all my careers in 43 as early it was just target practice

So no one misunderstands that statement I had nothing to do with GWX2 making it so hard it just so happens they arrived at that point from historical analysis and of course did it with so many other cool things to das boot.
As corny as it sounds one of the things I like is the new trawler model a correct rendition of the common trawler and the sound of the engine is priceless.
There are just so many tweaks that perfected a bunch of stuff.
Another thing they did better than has been done is the difficulty aiming the deck gun. I pretty much close to 200 meters now rather than waste ammo which gives a truer feeling of what using that pitching deck gun is like and makes it useless against any of the enemy combat units even the trawler or even a cargo with a deck gun.
Remember the vanilla or other mod pre GWX2 days when we could say: What just one destroyer? I don't have to dive for that I will finish him off at 4,000 meters!! In all of WWII one gun hit was scored by a U-Boat on a corvette so if you make two hits you double the score for the entire U-Boat Waffen of the whole war.
GWX2 is for seasoned SH3 that know it is better than ever and there is simply nothing else out there to top it but for noobs it is also great as you do not have to wait for reality it is better than ever now.
