View Full Version : Limited Depthcharges?

Hello evrybody,

yesterday I had the desire to sail the pacific-ocean again, and so I booted my windows-engine and entered my gato-sub (a career I started in the 2007s ;-)).

All went fine - except that I spent all my torps on some small cargo-vessels and stumpled upon a 3BBs and 4 CAs Taskforce on my way home. My remaining 3 torps all hit the Kongo-Class - but she continued her way without even noticing...

After refuling and rearming my sub at midway, I found a small convoy in the Formosa-Street. Nice one.. 6 vessels and only ONE escort (little subchaser). But that one was a really tough guy. He tracked me long before I was able to aim at the cargo-vessels and it was really hard to get rid of him. I spend 5 torps (I really wanted to get the cargo ;-)) on him and he evaded all. I did all kinda tricks - but he tracked me on and on again... real good guy!

But what was amazing... he dropped really a lot of dc's. And that is my question. Is a limited number of DCs (according to ship-class) modeled in SH4? I'm sureI counted more that 15 drops (each one firing 4 DCs)... Thats quite a large number for such a little piece of steel...

Regards from Germany...

PS : Using Patch 1.4 with latest TM

Hi,

I'm not sure about the amount of depth charges the usual suspects carry but i remember there being mentioned that some destroyers or sub chasers had around 125 or so from a thread a long time back and i'm not sure if anybody has altered the amounts in any way.

As for the excellent TM... if you are running 1.7.5 your really going to have to be subtle when engaging convoys....

the AI has been well for the lack of a better word "tweaked:up: " see Ducimus's TM info for what he may have changed... needless to say you cant just motor in on a convoy or the escorts are gonna hear you, Planes can now also see you at periscope depth and will nail your ass if you dont keep an eye on em.

I would also learn where to put the torps, if you are usuing auto targetting this will put all your torps in the same spot, you will need to spread them out over the ship to increase the damage.

i'd advise you also add some of the excellent ROW additions by the late Leovampire and friends, this adds quite a lot of immersion to the graphical side of things great eye candy when you blow an ammo ship :D.

125?? Ok... then I'm happy he lost my track 3hours later ;-)

Yes, I already recognized that - I have been playing the SH Series for quite a long time now - but TM is new to me (this is my first career with it). I installed it, after an engagement with a CV-Taskforce where I was able to sink 3 Flattops without even beeing pinged by the escorts ...so I decided it is necessary to increase difficulty without loosing nice features like the external cam ;-)

Is the ROW Mod now compatible with Patch 1.4?

Hi AA

I would advise you look at the ROW thread, quite a few of the additions are 1.4 compatible, infact these were updated only a week or so before Leovampire passed away. I also use RSRDC 221 along with TM 1.7.5 i have found this to be just to my liking.. hell i even like the Evil Ducimus planes hehehe.

when evading escorts make sure you are running silent 1 knot and as deep as possible and yes it may take hours, just like it did in real life.

A trick that I like to use when the destroyer just passes over head is to kick the engines into high gear for about 15 seconds and then I run at 2/3rds for about another 15 seconds before running at low speed again. If he's dropping cans, you want to stay at full or flank speed until they all explode.

Another thing to keep in mind is try to visualize which direction the destroyer is circling above you and try to keep the bow or stern pointed at him as best as possible. You'll be making a lot of left and right turns to minimize your signal.

RE, number of DC's carried by Tin cans in TM:

The number they carry, is stock. I did not modify the amount they carry, which grossly exceeds the historical amount. Why not? They drop them way too fast. From accounts ive read, JP escorts were a little selective when they dropped. If i was aware of a way to lower their "rate of fire" then i would have lowered the number of DC's they carry. The bottom line here, is they dump them overboard a little too fast, and if theyre payload was historical, theyd be out of DC's in no time at all, and then just mill about, doing little more then being annoying. I wanted them to retain their "teeth".

RE AI in general:
Some of this info is out of date, as it was written for Sh3, but the same princples apply:
