View Full Version : Valletta, 1942 ... DANG!

So I decided to start my 2nd GWX2.0 career in the Med, taking command of U371 (type VIIC) out of Salamis (my first career is still alive too, now in a IXC and 1943, but I know the Atlantic well and haven't played the Med much).

We have 4 patrols thus far that have gone quite well, sunk a couple of cruisers (Dido and Southampton), several Black Swans, some DD's (Hunt's, V&W and one Tribal) and an assortment of merchants from 4K to 7K+ tons.

But Valletta has always attracted me, despite nearly dying off there last patrol (took considerable damage, and 1 crew member killed). So we are back, despite the fact that half the entire allied escort fleet seems to hang out off the harbor approaches there!

Being ever so clever - - we got into position during a clear sky day, but with massive seas and high wind. Creeping in, staying near the bottom, we track multiple warship contacts, as well as several merchant sounds.

By miracles of miracles, we get within periscope sighting distance of the harbor outer anchorage (and at night and submerged, so those dang guns on the pylon thingy's cannot engage us). With my usual deadly aim - :p I have been at this since the original SHI days, give me some credit - we nail a big ore carrier, a troop carrier, then a reload! and we take out a big four stack liner :arrgh!: (btw, there was also an LST or some similar thing, but it seemed to be sinking fine on its own at anchor in the heavy seas, so I didn't waste any shots at it). The heavy seas meant our steam eels would have never been noticed, unlike the usual calm and blue sky Med weather.

Time to, as they say, get they heck outa' Dodge! Of course there are warship sounds galore all around us, it is Valletta afterall. As we try to crash our way out, we take out a Black Swan, and a Hunt I - nothing really skillful on my part at all, they just came charging straight at us (zero gyro at less then 650m, aim with the rudders, and shoot). Loosed off the stern tube at a V&W, but missed as it veered to port :x

Finally, the water depth is over 50m, and we can go deep and silent. The only eel we have left is the aft tube, until we can surface and move the externals. There are at least 6 warships near us, and we have limited water to move around in (water depth is now 451m, so getting deeper, but the pocket outside of Valetta is narrow for a bit yet), so this still may not come out well.

We are at 135m depth, silent running, and fingers crossed (so to speak, I'd never show such a sign of doubt in front of the crew). Trying to keep a narrow sound profile is kinda' difficult with warship sound contacts literally all around you :damn: I actually took a peek with the God Cam and the whole surface is lit up with star shells and search lights by with 6 ships in view, and others out of view - I took some screenies for later.

Oh well, stick your hand in a wasps nest, ya' gotta expect to get stung :p Seriously though, there is an amazing number of warships at Valletta - I know Malta was Churchill's personal hard stand, but shouldn't some of these be out patrolling the Island, not sitting at the front of the harbor?? We currently have 11 warship sound contacts around the dial (3 faint, thank goodness for small favors).

Anybody else try raiding Valletta in 1942 (February for U371)?

Yep tried it once but as I was making my approach the regular local meanies got joined by a taskforce of 2 BBs and assorted escorts, so I decided to try for one of those Battlewagons...no luck, at least i didn't get sunk, but I'm not doing that again...:-?

too much hassle, I now prefer to plink the single merchies out from between their 2 escorts from long range with them none the wiser :smug:

I made a similar attempt in 1942 once but was discovered before I made it to the harbor. While it was tempting to call in airstrikes from that distance, that worked very well, I hightailed it out of there. There were three DD's coming at me, but there were way more shells incoming.

I never went back ;)

Ah, Valletta. I think it's time for my WaW Valletta story again. ;)

December, 1942 Mediterranean

In W@W patrol, U186 was assigned to patrol CN26. We did our 72h patrol and managed to sunk couple of outbound merchants. After a long talk with the crew, I decided that U186 would proceed to photograph the entrance to port of Valletta. To be used, if Germany would attack the port. After few hours, U186 got permission to proceed.

The weather was stormy as we got closer to Valletta. Submerged, one-third ahead. I checked the depth continuously, to not hit the bottom. 5 warships were heard via hydrophone, all patrolling close to the entrance.

U186 slowly made itīs way through the warships and we were sure we made it. Then, only 2km from the entrance, enemy started pinging us! I ordered slow ahead and took course back to deeper waters (It was only 20m deep where I was). Soon, the first burst of explosions was heard. "Hah, aim better!" I though. Then the rest 4 came to play Hide & seek with me. I still couldnīt dive deeper than 21m.

After many many many near hits, 2 charges exploded right on top of us. Stabsobersbootsmann Jurgen Dittmer lost his life immediatly and the boat started to take on water. Flooding was quickly under control, but we had water onboard and the boat sank to bottom.

Everyone one was dead quiet. Soon the sharp 'PING' started again. I waited for the warship to be right on top of us, then started to pump the water out.

After a few minutes, I ordered the boat to be taken to 30m (Bottom was in 36m). Silent run, ahead at 1kts.

*PING* *PING *PING* *PING* *PING**PING*PING*

Another string of depth charges were dropped. We got hit again. Bootsmann Gerhard Schuster was wounded, stern torpedo tube was destroyed, batteries damaged, conning tower heavily damaged. I ordered ahead flank, it was only 9km to deeper waters.

We had to go back to silent run as the destroyers dropped their load deadly accurate on top of us.

After we got to deeper waters, I sighed for relief and took the boat to 120m. I calculated 172 depth charges, dropped on and around us.

U186 aborted the special mission and took heading back to La Spezia, but it didnt get home yet as we were ordered to continue our patrol near towards Gibraltar.

This has been the only patrol ever, when I really was scared for my boat.

We may have made it. At least I got through the rest of the night and then managed to creep away at 2kn during the day. We surfaced and aired out the boat and charging batteries, with a course set for home - 80% hull damage and both 'scopes out of commission. Now to tuck tail and hopefully sneak back to Salamis for repairs, and pray that we don't have to try diving more then 25m on the way!
