It was a nice sunny June day with a few puffy clouds and light seas. Not even 24 hrs from start of Patrol from Vigo. Guaranteed good weather to sink some Frenchies with the deck gun, right?

Wrong!

After sound check we surfaced to intercept one large and a small freighter. We dove the moment we saw the ships and moved into position. I watched the ship approach, this was a good beginning. Ordered surface and lowered periscope.

One minute later, on the bridge, the sky was still scattered puffy clouds but raining hard. Ships nowhere in sight. Game would not let me man the deck gun :damn: by the time my face got red with anger, we were down to our famous 200 meters visibility, thick overcast and heavy seas. :damn:

You think that's bad... I once ran entirely out of torpedoes... and on my way back home, while submerged, I picked up a nice little convoy... upon careful inspection.. there were lots of nice fat cargo ships in there and one tanker.... AND NO ESCORTS !!!

So of course I surfaced to get my deck gun ready and what do you think happened ? Suddenly, that famous 15 mph wind/rain/hurricane blew in.:damn:

I followed these ships for days and the weather didn't let up. It got to a point where my fuiel got so low that I had to turn around and go home.:nope:

I've won a bet a few quarters ago. I was on my way back to Wilhelmshaven with no torpedoes left but with some deck gun ammo. When approaching GB from the West side I said to my comrade: you'll see, I'll meet some freighters, but the seas will be too heavy to use the deck gun, but the very moment I reach Helgoland, the weather will become good. We bet.

And I won. :D

EDIT: Forrgot to mention the tonnage: 96.9k tonns. Would be enough to sink one more medium ship to beat the magic 100k barrier. Thus the bet. :)
