View Full Version : A very nice Heligoland island!

On my previous missions in GWX 2.0 I have passed Heligoland either in darkness or in foggy
and rainy weather. This time it was on midday a sunny day.
What a difference compared to the flat and barren island in the standard SH3! Now a populated
island rises hight out of the sea with a realistic harbour. It looks very good, I have
compared with photos on Internet. I did enjoy my flying across it with the free camera when
passing on my way out to the Atlantic. Thank you, GWX team!

Yeah ! I was VERY impressed with Heligoland when I drove near the south side of it yesterday. Was this added in 2.0 ? I don't recall seeing the little port there before.

@GWX Devs: FANTASTIC view! I enjoy it every time I pass by.

:yep: You are correct!

And neither "munich" nor "cologne" exist. They are called MÜNCHEN and KÖLN....but *sigh* ... what should we do about it ...?

Well the indian's managed to assert their vernacular pronunciations of Bombay and Calcutta on the rest of the world, and the Turks did with their version of Constantinople, so i dare say you can assert your national spellings on the rest of the world too. If you care enough to, that is.

Personally i like the fact that Milano in English is Milan and in german is Mailand, Venizia is Venice is Venedig etc ..there is history in these different spellings.

I guess I'll have to stop by Heligoland to check it out:up:

Glad you like it
Tis TigerKatziTatzi's terrain improvement from way back
As the terrain files are huge I could only add the improvement to GWX 2 as the terrain files HAD to be included anyway

I saw it too.
I sailed around this island two times.
Very nice texture and harbour stuff!
Good work!

Well, it does belong to Germany, and their pronunciation and spelling are the correct ones, but the British always called it 'Heligoland', so that is sort of acceptable.

So...is it 'Peiping', 'Peking' or 'Beijing'?:rotfl:

No idea myself :hmm:
Anyone from that area in this forum?
Wikipedia advises "Bejing" as it's native name.... I would gladly use it :yep:

I too like the new Heligoland - On every patrol that starts from Wilhelmshaven, I always go past it to admire the view.

Don't know about the accuracy, but Wikipedia has a decent article about it ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heligoland

Of course I was joking. It's gone from the first to the last over the years. As I understand it, it changes depending on the dialect of the party in charge at the time.

Be careful about going around Heligoland after mid December, 1939. I just got a radio message that the British dropped minefields all around the island and off to it's west.

It's native name is "北京" (I hope that appeared properly) but the transliteration has changed over time. The current official transliteration is "Beijing" but it was "Peking" from 1906 through 1979. Wikipedia has a fairly good write-up (with useful hotlinks, including pronunciation) on it here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beijing).

Too late! :D
Followed 2 homecoming destroyers, passing the southside of Helgoland.... BOOM!

Result:

- three men dead
- forward compartment heavy damaged
- sitting on the bottom for hours of repair time
- entered port too late... all the bars were already closed :damn:

Virtually speaking, of course.:rotfl:

Yep, Helgoland is indeed awesome...and a ghost island, too!

Seriously! I was passing near the island, but well outside any visual range, a few patrols back. I figured I'd zoom over in free camera mode to admire the scenery once again. When I got there it spooked me to see buildings and gun fortifications floating in mid-air but with the proper elevations like the hills were still under them! Ships floating at non-existent docks, too! The island had disappeared into THE UNKNOWN!

<cue dramatic, spooky music>

Stay away from the Bavarian Triangle!!

Hey, I don't know if that's any scarier than the fact you were able to mysteriously float from your boat and hover over the ocean at will

Hey,
I spotted the destroyers that dropped the mines west of Heligoland. They were two VW class destroyers. When I did the ships camera to have a look at them, instead of depth charges they were loaded with menacing-looking mines. Too bad I was out of position and they were travelling at 30 knots.
About a day later, I got the radiogram informing me of the mine field.
Awesome! way to go GWX!

No joy, they were TGB(target got by). I radioed them in hoping an air attack would be forthcoming but they were gone by then too.

Nice to know those little things get seen
Makes scripting them worthwhile
Minefields IE 1 and IE 2 IIRC

Ah yes

Early on the 10th, destroyers INTREPID and IVANHOE of the 20th Destroyer Flotilla laid small minefield IE‑1 in channels through the German minefields in the Heligoland Bight in 54‑06N, 05‑29E.

Late on the 13th, minelaying destroyers IVANHOE and INTREPID of the 20th Destroyer Flotilla laid minefield IE‑2 in the German channels of the West Wall minefield in the Heligoland Bight in 54‑06N, 05‑29E

Ever since I received the radio message saying the RN had mined areas east and west of Heligoland, I've been giving it a wide berth. I'm hoping eventually I'll get a message saying the KM has swept the areas and the danger has passed.

Yes, the widows and orphans of hapless Kriegsmarine sailors thank BBW!
