I have recently been venting my spleen about the pitiful sound of the guns in COD4 on various boards and to my wife (imagine her interest) and it occurred to me that there is perhaps the slighest possibility that I'm nuts and they sound just fine.

Now, I'm not terribly interested in an exact replication of the sound a particular rifle makes, as I honestly couldn't tell you what they really sound like, and I imagine they vary wildy with a number of accoustical conditions and factors. (I've fired an AR-15 and Norinco M-14, but with ear protectors on and hundreds of rounds later, even human conversation start to sound like the teachers in Charlie Brown)

What I do like to hear is some balls behind the sound, some reverb, a bit of crack, the metallic rack of the slide, Christ anything other than the 8-bit Tandy-like bleeps of the COD 4 ones. I should mention I'm using an Audigy 2 and 5.1 speakers, not cutting edge, but they should do.

I'm also playing Crysis and GRAW2 right now, and boy, I love the gun sounds in those ones. Even if they aren't accurate, they sure sound wicked!

So, I'm interested in finding out what everyone else thinks. What are the games with the best sounding weapons? What do you listen for in a gun sound?

I like my sound to be sharp and short. As little bass as possible, metallic "PAK"s. Not the usual "BOWWHHhhh", I hate the echo in the end of most sounds I've heard.

If anyone has seen a russian war movie called "9th company" might remember the scene where they are still in training and they are blasting off in the range. The sound of Dragunov when the guy shoots is perfect! Makes me drool everytime I hear it.

You can watch the range scene from here, the sniper shot is at 02:19

It sounds alot better on the DVD, the video compression obviously has lowered the sound quality in this one.

Yeah. good call..a metallic "PAK" is about right, actually. LOL I think also if I looked long enough through this indexed list of Batman sound effects, I'd find the perfect one: http://www.batmania.com.ar/paginas/serie_onomatopeyas_cantidad.htm

I agree, I find in most games, the sniper rifles have an exxagerated, drawn-out, Hollywood sound to them, usually many decibels louder than any other effect in the game.

The weapon sounds in Red Orchestra are perfect. For example, the Mosin Nagant has a really rustic clank when you rebolt and reload, instead of CoD2 just having a "chunk-chunk", the Mosin on RO sounds more like "cl-CHINK-cl-THUNK"

Its awesome to hear when you reload too, as the animation involves really stuffing the clip into the top of the gun and you hear the bullets lock into place. Then you get shot in the eyeball.

You should have done what Baldric did, carved your name into a bullet so you would have the bullet with your name on it that way you would never get shot, because you wouldnt shoot yourself and the odds that there is a second bullet with your name on it are very small indeed:doh:

There's another thing round here that's very small indeed, Baldrick.

I dont look so much for graphics in a realistic shooter, I look more for the feeling you get when they nail the atmosphere. For example, I'd take running across rubble with someone unloading a realistic sounding MP40 from a hundred yards away and hitting nothing but air because of the recoil. Or the realistic reload animation where there's no nice clean entries of the magazine, and the gun clanks and clunks as it should as you give it more fuel.

Ahhh I do so love realism.

Your brain, for example, is so minute, Baldrick, that if a hungry cannibal cracked your head open there wouldnt be ennouh inside to cover a small water biscuit.
God I love that series.

Try shooting a .58 caliber black-powder muzzle-loader sometime...you hear a nice resounding BOOM that makes everyone at the range think you set off a cannon!
