View Full Version : Rough seas attack convoy options?

I have tracked a convoy for 180km via sonar, but the winds have been running at 14-15m/sec with very rough seas; no rain. I was happy for somewhat better conditions for my attack.

Now, I might try attacking on the surface at night, but visibility isn't too bad. I am worried about being spotted by escorts.

Another possibility is a daytime submerged attack, but I am concerned about torpedoes in such heavy seas (early 1941) or possibly broaching while I set up a PD. Will broaching the sail be spotted by escorts?

Recommendations?

Thanks.

Night surface attacks in very bad weather. I do this all the time. Wait for nightfall.

Get ahead of the pack 90 degrees AOB. Submerged at silent speed, you want to be inside the lanes and let the ships come to you. After the lead escorts pass rise to surface, once fully surfaced lower the depth to decks awash. DA really does lessen visibility to the escorts.

Most of your targets will be under 500 m so you really can't miss. Have all your firing solutions set before they get there, all doors open. Wait for lead ships to get within 20-30 degrees and let loose as needed. If you play it right you'll be able to fire all fwd and stern eels. Then take it down fast and run through the lanes to avoid escorts DC'ing you.

As for the eels, I set all tubes at 5m and contact detonation. No worries then.

Do not hang around to watch the pretty explosions. Merchants have guns and searchlights. At least in GWX 2.0 they do.

I managed to make a sufaced attack at night in similar conditions and was able to run at flank speed until I got to within 1500m of the target before I went slow for the final attack run.

IIRC conditions were Overcast, No rain, Wind speed 15m/s and Moderate visibility. If the sky is clear and there is a moon, work out if it is likely to set whilst it is still dark and wait until it has set before attacking on the surface.
