Been there, done that, and had a blast! Just remember this, no matter how rough it might get (depending on your RDC's) it's all just a game to them. Tough it out and you'll be glad you did.

It's easy as hell, just keep yourself looking sharp and you'll do fine

If I can leave you one last hint for success, I hope you pick a squadron, not a ship, cause it's so much better living on dry land and not in a berthing, especially as an airman - you get so much more personal liberty.

Well with any luck I'll get sent to Europe first since I've never been there in person before. If not well my options are stay here in the US, or go to the Pacific.

That advice is right on. Just keep a low profile. I remember a couple of guys coming into basic with their heads already shaved and that proved to be a very bad mistake. I figured they just had a bad recruiter that didn't spend any time with them before their departure date.

The advice I got was to remove any picture of a girlfriend or wife from the wallet. During shakedown it gives them one less thing to rag about. Also, don't take a lot of money with you. The ones that did had to write down the serial number of each bill so as to prevent stealing.

The first few days you may feel like you've made a mistake but like the other poster said, it's just a game. The one yelling at you all really wants everyone to graduate. It's a pressure game to make sure you can handle it.

After a few days when you hear the yelling you will no longer tense up. Instead, you'll just think "Looks like someone is getting chewed out."

"Don't be first, don't be last, and don't volunteer for anything"
Is that even valid these days? I went in back in the VietNam era, and when I pulled the "don't volunteer" line, my CC said "The Army has a draft; the Navy doesn't. When you signed on the dotted line you volunteered for everything!":rotfl:

Anyway, best of luck, Kptlt. Hellmut Neuerburg.:sunny:

Best of Luck to you. You've made a great choice. After over 30 years in the US Army, I don't regret a day. As someone said earlier basic and the military is what you make of it -- and my personal thanks to you for voluteering to serve your country.

Good luck and hang tough, future admiral! :ahoy:

Going into submarines? ;)

Although I was never able to serve, my oldest brother was a marine grunt at the tail-end of Vietnam, my middle brother was an army dogface right after 'Nam, and my dad served as a Petty Officer 3rd Class in the Navy Air Force during Korea and worked as an aircraft structural mechanic.

Their stories were always humorous, interesting, sad, and terrifying. One that my dad told me highlights the hazards of basic training quite well...

The training instructor had the sailors lined up and giving them his daily rant when he finished by asking for two volunteers for a job. "Which of you is rated to drive a 6x6?"
Two sailors cautiously raised their hands and he replied, "Mops and buckets are in the utility shed. Go swab down the Officer's Galley!"

The U.S. armed services is one of the most political organizations of social Darwinism you'll ever find. Just do what you're told and never, EVER listen to any sailor who begins a sentence with, "I got a great idea...".:rotfl:

I've always been confused by the military.
1st, they're the only group I know of that pays its volunteers.
2nd, they're expected to abuse their new employees in ways that would result in lawsuits and probably jail time anywhere else.

But what do I know? When I was a kid I wanted to join the marines, because I figured they must be the ones who got to ride in submarines. It made sense to me.:88)

Good luck.
