View Full Version : How Many Torpedoes Do You Need To Sink the Nelson

Hey Guys,

I am playing stock GWX 2.0 and I have just found my first convoy...and boy howdy, right in my sights is the HMS Nelson along with a host of other ships...some big, some small. So anyways, I put four torpedoes into the ship at different depths...5-8 meters..and the dang thing goes nose deep but does not sink. I drop to 100m to reload torps and get depth charged to depth.

My question is, how many eels does it take to down the Nelson, and should I have just sent each of those eels onto, say, a Large Cargo instead....

BTW, this is my first patrol in GWX 2.0...for some reason, all of my previous attempts at patrolling have ended in crappiness due to bug and or saves disappearing. :damn:

I don´t have GWX 02 but if i remember its about 3 torpedos i´m needed to send this titan to bottom. My torpedo depth was just about 1m below Nelson´s keel.

Like I said, I put four into her and the beast did not sink...I have realistic ship sinking time on, but still, four eels should do something! Right?

It took me six once.

Last time in GWX 1.03 it was 3 ... Now in GWX 2.0 Nelson-class cost me 7 ... 2 duds and one miss inclusive

It took me 5 torpedos last time I sunk a Nelson class. Normally I go for 1m underkeel shots, but the seas were very rough and torpedos have a habit of either banging off the hull or whizzing on under in such bad weather. First I hit it 3 times with torpedos set at 3m depth on impact triggers. This brought it to a dead stop and the bow went under, but the ship was still afloat. After the escorts left, I hit it with one more torpedo towards the rear and it still didn't go under. The fifth hit finally did the trick.

Pretty tough considering I've taken down the Hood with 2 torpedos (in GWX 2.0) and I just took down an Illustrious class carrier with 3 torpedos during the same campaign.

Generally 3 hits seems to at least slow a large ship down enough to where the rest of the task force leaves it behind and you can set up for the killing blow. I've seen Revenge or Nelson class BB's keep on going at 20kts after 4 hits though, so you can never be sure.

It seems that they made their big ships REALLY well...with lots of water tight compartments and what not.

Yes they are tough M.....F...ks, but how much this is realistic. Note that the Royal Oak(HISTORICALY not in game) whas listed on back on only few torps.(i don´t remember now how much torps whas there one or two). I know that that the Royal Oak whas design from WW1 but....:hmm:

The number of torpedoes can vary, but I find it's an absolute must to have one go under smokestack into the boilers. I will get secondary explosions there every time, but not always under the turrets. I always set my fish to half the keel depth and at impact. That said, my ideal attack on a Nelson:

1- under smokestack
2- under fuel cell forward of smokestack,
3 -under turret forward of fuel cell.

I think I can do it with just 2, but I've always sunk it with 3. During Weserabung, I took out the Hood with a shot to the boilers and took out a Nelson class this way.

I used one, and that was right under the smokestack. Blew the whole ship to hell, and it sank in 2 minutes. She rolled over on her starboard side (the side I fired the torpedo into), and then started to go down by the stern, slowly spinning as her bow was pulled into the air. She went down vertically, and thus, that was the end of the Nelson.

I hit the hood with one torp 2/3 to aft, and she DETONATED like the poor babe did in reality... like my mate said above me... its got a hell of alot to do with luck... though I'd say 20-30% is your solution (if you've got a correct solution you've still got poor chances all things considered) another 20% is your positioning (if yer perpendicular to the ship you've got pretty decent chances for your impact detonators, which by the way are the only ones I use, since those damn magnetic ones have the F@#KING worst downside ever... BLOWING UP HALFWAY TO THE BLOODY TARGET!) and the last percentile is all luck... so you'd better hope yer an Irishman like yours truely!

by the way, has anyone here seen any american battleships outside american waters? my career is on the date of january 5th 1940, in the med. but even still I've had lots of run ins with american destroyers of the french coast:|\\ and when i made my crossing in through Gibraltar. see Das Boot, and you'll know what I went through... my boat sunk just through the straight and I hit the bottom somewhere at around 250m after being severely damaged in a depthcharging from a Hunter II and V&W{whom i mortally wounded with an eel to her low bow-port heard her sinking on the hydrophones (a bloody miricle they werent destroyed) and looked thru the periscope to see her nearly take my ship out whilst she made her final voyage to where i just rested myself! :o i lost 12 of my best men, including my Cheif Engineer and my Navigator} brought the boat back up somehow {im in a VIIC} and made it to la spezia on fumes... a few more miles and i would have had to hoist the sails :rotfl:

I am in the biggest cat and mouse battle of the cneutry or war right now. I have sunk two of the ships and I have two eels into the Nelson and she is nose heavy but still going. Meanwhile, I am being depth charged to all hell by two destroyers. I have been hit about 5 times and been able to repair...it got so bad one time that I ended up on the BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN! 112m deep...I sat there for a while. I am not sure what to do....I have been fighting the battle all night...over 12 hours total gameplay.

Battleships can be sunk with 2-3 torpedoes if you hit them under the main gun placements (where ammunition is stored) and the superstructure :yep:

I put three into her all on the starboard side bow. Had to go deep because of escorts. When I surfaced 1.5 hrs later she was no where to be seen, so I followed her last course a found her bow down up to the 3rd turrent. I put a 4th into her port side below the 3rd turrent and shewent under within minutes.

I don't mean to brag

But I didn't believe it was possible to slab the Nelson with one eel, untill I did it. :ping:

Hey I think I deserve to milk this one.

Remember the Royal Oak was in the middle of the "inregnible" Scapa Flow, they wouldn't have had the doors closed and not where near ready for any action. On the high seas they would probably be ready for something like a torpedo attack, with the nessecary precautions put in plase :yep:. I took out a Revenge class (HMS Resolution) with three fish, one midships, second under rear turret, the last hit her propulsion area knocking out two props. Sank in about 20 minutes.

If I spot a BB, I will go for it, even if there are other ships, mainly because:

A- Its a BB!!!
B- Lots of renown, nice tonnage and a kick in the teeth for the Royal Navy lol :smug:

Sunk the Nelson with two eels, magnetic pistol 12 mt depth -- salvo with 3 degrees deflection. I was playing SHIII + GWX 1.03 realism 90% (i. e. full realism except for esternal views, which I don't use to gather extra info, but just to enjoy the show).

Two were enough for the Revenge, too: it seems these battleships aren't that tough. Never had a chance on other BB's, though.

Magnetic under the Keel shots are the most effective against Capital Ships. Two under the keel should do it. Impact ones may take 3-5 hits on the same side. Yesterday in one patrol I was lucky to come across HMS Hood in very rough waters and had to hit it with Six torpedoes using Impact Pistols only to finally sink it, all in a space of two hours, so its not that I just wasted extra torpedoes. I waited till I was sure it won't go down and then hit it one more time. HMS Nelson I luckily came across on the same patrol (as part of a large Convoy, travelling very slow) with only 3 torpedoes left, one front tube, two rear (IXB). After some death defying maneuvers I hit the Nelson with my front torpedo on the starboard side and two rear torpedoes on the port side (all impact pistols due due to very rough waters). Unfortunately, that didn't do the job and Nelso sailed away limping to one side.

On other occasions ofcourse I have sank Nelsons with two under the Keel shots.

BTW, I am playing GWX 1.1.

Any ship that's hit in the 'sweet spot' is sinkable with one. The hard part is finding that elusive 'sweet spot' http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif

I fired 4, one detonated early and 3 hit. Nelson sunk after 2 hours.
Here you can see 9 destroyers searching for me and Nelson is slowly sinking (to the far right).
