View Full Version : Help! Ambient Sound Problem

I've just recently returned to SH3 (six months away).

I have a problem where the ambient sound (like a howling wind) will just get caught in a loop. Even when I change stations or dive the sub, the loop continues playing. Very heard to conduct a sonar search when you have a screeching wind.

Has anyone seen this problem?

Does anyone have a solution or a workaround?

For the moment, I am trying to turn off hardware sound acceleration and see if that resolves it.

Thanks.

I recall a similar sound problem a while back when I was playing 1.03 (not since 2.0 came out).

I saved the game and exited SH3. Relaunched SH3 by way Commander, brought up saved game and problem was gone. Have you tried this?

Yes, it goes away if you reload, but it was happening frequently. So, I wanted to find a better answer. Thanks.

Yes, I find that saving and exiting and re-entering at the same point fixes it.

I think I resolved it by backing off sound hard acceleration by one step down. All is working quite nicely now.

Got the same sound in loop a few times in last two days. Always after Alt-Tabbing.

I've had the same troubles with the sound in GWX 2.0. It usually occurs when I switch from the External View (F12) to one of the interior views (Command, Map Room, TDC, etc..).

It sometimes will stop once I surface the boat and then dive again. It's almost like the script gets stuck thinking your still surfaced and keeps playing the effect of your boat cutting through the waves, which can sound like wind or a whooshing when heard from inside the hull underwater.

I have the sound card's acceleration set to 'none' and jumped through the usual hoops of driver updates/system config/hardware settings. This very likely is a bug in GWX as I've never had this problem with stock SH3 and trying various settings make no difference. From reading other threads it seems the GWX devs are a bit touchy about these things, but it's pretty much expected that any large mod is going to have bugs.

Frankly, I love the GWX mod and admire all the work that's gone into it. Bashing it is the last thing I'd want to do.

Let's hope this sound trouble gets fixed rather than flamed.

That's the usual fix.

What exactly do you mean by "backing off sound hard acceleration?" Where is this adjustment?

I think this is it, in the control panel.

This is an SH3 bug NOT related to GWX. This problem has been plagueing me ever since the game first came out and has been driving me nuts for 3 years.

Usually happens for me when heavy weather hits high winds, rain etc. And usually in the Hydrophone station although I've had it on the map screen also.

Save/exit generally cures it...for awhile.

Yep, I never said that it was GWX. However, I don't doubt that particular combinations of system load and sound files make it happen more or less. So, I would not be suprise that if there is some relationship between frequency and particular mods in use.

Anyway, to change your sound hardware acceleration, look in the Control Panel for the DirectX applet. In it you will find a tab and a slider for Hardware Acceleration. Normal position is full right. Try sliding it a click to the left. (By the way, when I tried playing SH3 with it slid full left and I was getting a ticking sound while in internal views of the boat.)

Good luck.
