I was just wondering, what escort do you fear the most? Destroyers, DEs?
Me personaly I hate the DEs and Black Swan the most. So many depth charges. :o

Black swan's and armed trawlers. Trawlers always seem to spot/hear me.
Except for my last patrol, I snuck into Loch Ewe under heavy fog. I was running decks awash at low speed, when suddenly out of the fog, came an armed trawler and passed me at about 100m at the stern.......... and kept going. I couldn't believe my luck. Except when I finally reached the harbour, there was nothing worth sinking............ except the floating dock.
Nice tonnage in those babys.

Black Swan would be my least favourite, followed closely by DE's.
So far, in GWX 2.0 had only one encounter with escort. Bastard came in from behind. I didn't even know he was there till he started pinging from about 500 meters away.

River Class Frigate from a submerged POV is the most dangerous

Isnt Black Swan destroyer, and what is the difference between destroyer and destroyer escort.

Destroyers had military power plants and heavier construction
they normally had enclosed turrets where a DE or a commercial
consturtion frigate or corvette more often had open mounts
and used commercial power plants. also destroyers normally
had less range than DE's and Frigates. because as dedicated
escorts they needed the range as an emphasis.
Black Swan is actually a Sloop derived from the name
Sloop of War which is the name given to the smallest
military combatant ship in years past but came to mean
something similar but different in later years.
the BlackSwan class sloops are directline descendents
from the enchantress class sloops and were excellant
sea boats. they had a large emphasis on D/P armament
and were highly useful against aircraft. the also carried
a whole bunch of dc's but were not suited to ahead
throwing weapons like hedgehog or squid.
Blackswans were built in military yards to military standards
William Reed of Smiths Dry Docks Co. when tasked with a
commercialized military follow on to his militarized
commercial design (Flower Class) used the basic hull
design of the Black Swans but set the design to be
built to commerce standards in Commerce yards
River enjoyed excellant range and had the latest
ASW sensors and although equipped with modest
surface armament when compared to a black swan
they did have forward throwing weapons in the case
of the Rivers this was Hedgehog although when
later derivatives came out the Bay class carried
Two Squid launchers making it one of the most
if not the very most dangerous escort of the war.
although american DE's with much longer opportunities
sank more subs. another later AA version the
Bay class addressed the same hull but with an
emphasis on AA and a reduced ASW suite.
the idea of commercial constructions was to liberate
the military construction and repair yards to work on
high priority combatants instead of escort construction
and repair this also had the effect of broadening the
skills of the new workforces. and men who had sailed
in frieghters and commercial ships prior to the war
after their ninety days training could step on board
a DE or a Frigate or Corvette and when they stepped
into the engine room there was nothing exoctic they
were instantly familiar with what they were looking
at. where as a destroyers turbines werent that common.
lots of stuff.

I run into more DE's than black swans, so my vote has to go with them. I've had times where I thought the coast was clear, only to find I had a DE on my 6 the entire time. Stupid Bernard never let me know of critical need to know information... Next patrol I'll see that he's on galley duty :yep:

Definatley the Black Swan in GWX 1.03. As for GWX 2.0 I've had no encounters with any escort vessel (yet). I hope it stays that way, but I doubt it.

The worst are those with side launchers i hate those, and later the hedgehog thing well.... And no matter the ships, its the crew, an elite escort no matter the ship not the same as with green crew.

I voted Black Swan because of the shortage of choice, but as TJ quite rightly states.....fear whatever it is, if it is armed with the hedgehog http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif

I think that the worst bastard is that who sink you just when you get nice tonnage rating in one mission(two C2Cargo, one T3tanker and one small merchant). :stare:
Destroyer is worst i think(i donīt like to see them in my periscope), fully featured sub killer machine.:hmm:
:( Flower class ... they are everywhere and barely worth to shoot at .. :damn:

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Cmdr. Walker one of the most famous of the hunter/killer groups leaders did most of his operations from a Black Swan.

Haven't gotten too late into the war yet, so for the moment it's those frikkin' ASW trawlers and Armed Trawlers who seem to have some kind of clairvoyance as they circle overhead. Never dropping D/Cs accurately but not leaving me alone!! :shifty:
Of course, the participants of Zerstorerfest 1940 rank pretty high on my list of 'torpedo at nearest opportunity'. ;)

Nailed a Black Swan in the Med just this weekend. Came charging straight at me, so I put an electric eel a metre under his keel and he sank quickly - plowing his own bow under rapidly as it flooded  We (U-371, type VIIC) went on to sink the Ore Carrier it had been escorting too
Of course, there was a rear guard Black Swan too, but as we went deep and silent running, he just ran off fast to the east (dropped some charges, but they were nowhere near us). No point hanging around I guess, with his charge and his fellow escort already sunk.
I find the escorts to be a bit slow on the uptake in '41 in the Med. In the past two patrols, we've sunk a Town class, a Hunt III, and now a Black Swan (also took out a Dido and a Southampton, but these cruisers were unescorted).

Good description on the "sloops" MM
Because I edit my RND file and have the Egret, Grimsby and Bittern classes (forerunner to the Black Swan) I see more of these in the early years.
As was said these were made to escort convoys from base to base without refueling so were the primary early escort along with trawlers and old DDs like the V&W which were short legged and required running off to get fuel.
The A&B added by GWX2 were A-H class DDs that were worn out had their guns and torpedoes reduced and AS equipment upped as well as boilers removed reducing speed and increasing fuel capacity and range.
The corvettes annoy me as they are hard to hit but the sloops seem to be the deadlier AS ships at least to me.

No prob matey........Commanders would occasionally change vessels to go to newer boats or whilst their original ship was undergoing a major refit

I f**king hate the Hunter classes, I II and III, they always find me... bastards keep pinging me and all attempts to trick them and out manouver the depthcharges when at large depths usually end up in massacre or heavy damage... a hunter class in good position is enough for me to cease an attack on a convoy and shadow for a bit longer and repostion on the otherside... hate those damn things....:damn:
ive only sunk V&W's C classes and flower corvettes... ive taken out a flower corvette with my deck gun... now that was a battle to behold!:arrgh!: yarrrrrr
