I noticed a contradiction between the AOB calculator directions and the "High Realism Tutorial" (the one you use to describe hitting a merchant and offer for folks to download). In the latter you write on p. 5 "I think this is a good time to explain to you how to use the Calculator. On the Calculator, move the middle Compass Dial to have the Sub Course Heading (250`) line up with the blue Arrow. Make sure this heading is always kept centered at the Arrow while the calculator is handled. Find the Target Bearing (60`) along the outer blue Base Wheel and read the matching bearing to the middle Compass Dial. The matching bearing is 311...."

In the AOB calculator directions, you mention nothing about using the blue arrow. Which set of directions are correct? The confusion might explain why I stil can't hit anything.

I like the tool, but wanted to understand how I and others, can effectively use it.

The directions that came in the PDF along with the AoB Calculator are just for finding Angle on Bow for those players that have their game play options set to "Manual Targeting System" enabled (check marked) and the "No Map Contact Update" disabled (unchecked). Those instructions are the most basic for the gamer trying to learn to use the various manual targeting techniques. With the above options set, the Navigation Map is displaying a "ship" icon indicating it's position and heading. There is no need to find it's heading with the calculator since it can be seen and determined from the map as those directions point out.

When you desire to try the High Realism options setting of both the above enabled. The blue Arrow will be used to place your subs heading into the calculator rather than the black triangle. Next you will need to make a guess of the target ships AoB (believe me this is difficult when your looking at a 2 dimensional monitor screen). With the approximate AoB angle of the inner dial lined up to the target bearing along the outer base wheel. You can find the heading of the target ship by reading the compass bearing at the smaller red triangle of the inner dial. As I pointed out in the tutorial, all this info can be gathered through the reading of the lower dials of the Position Keeper and using the tools at the nav. map.

I made the calculator to preform various tasks knowing different players will use it in different ways. That's why there are two different places to input your subs heading. The black Triangle along the top for basic AoB calculations. The blue Arrow along the bottom for finding "ship course heading" or "bearing to north" for Navigation Map plotting in High Realism play.

I'm afarid I assumed the pictures of the basic instructions showing the ship icons on the Nav. map would be enough to explain what to use, and when. I'm sorry for not explaining it better. :-?
