This was turned off in the RFB Mod and often I detect a ship with no national flag. Asking myself if to attack or not. There are a number of things that can help you. First you can surface and have the man all stations activated. If the deck gunner does not fire then it isn't an enemy vessel. Second if the ship do not take evasive actions then most probably it's either allied or neutral.

I do believe we accidentally sunk a couple of Russian merchies during the war. To say that high command wasn't too thrilled about it would be an understatement...:rotfl:
