Hi mates,

Happy New Year for all !:D
I also put this post on Sh4 general forum to avoid miss any comment.

I just build a new PC: E6850, 8800GT512, GA-p35-ds3...plus Crysis and CD4...all this on a 26" wide LCd monitor...These new FPS games really rocks on this system:sunny:

BTW, I had a ATi X800XTPE prior my new 8800GT/new PC: Ati image quality is really much better than nvidia for SH3/SH4! Seems that Nvidia have a cheat on all AA modes for things at great distance - the case of SH3/Sh4 - the AA (in any configuration) just donīt work well at great distant objects on Nvidia cards!!!

But for games that renders things relatively near the player the Nvidia image is also really great, like the FPS games.:yep:

I tried some search on the net about the problem and seems that this is an old nvidia issue, like discussed here:
http://www.simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2200966&fpart=1

Anyhow, someone knows a fix or tweak for this annoying Nvidia image quality behaviour on Sh3/Sh4?:hmm:

Thanks in any advice!

The last time my Nvidia 7900/GS worked right was with driver 94.24. Am using 169.21 and both SH3 & Sh4 no longer run right ???? Is there a fix for this??? Dell 400-XPS Win XP MCE with 4G of RAM.

What type of problem do you have with the new drivers? Also AA/shimmering problems?

Any time I run AA I have trouble. The screen flickers and strange shapes appear. I run a default global setting and it's ok???:damn:

You can activat and deaktivate the AA in game by "shift Pageup and shift pagedown. During night patrol I deactivate AA to get rid of the shimmering problems and during day I activate the AA.

Thanks for the tip Mikael!
Anyhow, who knows why Nvidia yet didn't fixed this bug??:nope:
I just yet didn't "test" my old Fligh Sims with my new rig...if they also look bad like Sh3 I will return to ATI cards ASAP. It's a pity, because probably this is only a driver matter....

FYI, yesterday, i tried Riva Tuner with all possible tweaks and the poor distant AA issue and shimmering textures are still there...

Before I updated to the latest Nvidia driver that sort of thing happend so I found out by using ALT+TAB to minimise and maximise it again solved that problem.....

I run my SH III with a GF 7900 GTX, Amd 4400+ Dualcore, 2gig ram.
Before that with GF 6800, Amd 3000+
I havent had any graphic problems since the the game came out.
The "Uzo" graphic bug was fixed with a patch if I remember right.

I had some problems last night, but I think that was just that time.
Restarted and everything was a ok again.

I run an NV6600gt pcie 128mb and dont have any trouble out of it. The one thing I like is it has pre-settings for a lot of games already figured in.

I have two Geforce 7600 Gt in SLI configuration, and the only problem I found, once I had got Anisotropic Filtering and AA correctly configured ( I think!) is that the night-time clouds look as if they are daubed on like paint on scenery board.

current driver 6.14.11.6218

Yes, I also think that Nvidia cards are great and will work well with a lot of games. But for games that have distant objects being rendered as in Fligh sims and for our wonderful Silent Hunter 3&4 the problems with AA and shimmering textures becomes to appear (shimmering textures is in truth visible in the majority of games).

Probably the guys that didn't noticed any problem never had a ATI card recently: the image quality is really very, very good on ATI cards. Like that much old 3dfx 5500.:yep: Now, after have the two cards, ATI and Nvidia - I also had the old 3dfx 5500 ;) - I can say this with reason.

Well, perhaps Nvidia will fix this issue in a new driver soon??:D

Wow!! Now there's an old name from the '90's Voodoo 3DFX:up:

I had Voodoo 1, 2, 3 and the 5 5500!:arrgh!:
After that, the revolutionary R9700, followed by the X800XTPE and now the 8800GT 512. The worst image quality? Humm, Humm... Itīs a pity, because probably is just a drive matter! (iīm yet not conformed :damn: )

Our friend Periscope (from SH4 forum) suggested nHancer tweak as a probable solution and he was right: nHancer solved the problem and save my day!
Yeah, Nvidia also can show the same image quality present on ATI cards: itīs the most obvious supersampling (SS) AA modes that are hide on the Nvidia drives!

This will bring some FPS hit (from 20 to 60%, depends on the SS AA mode that you will use - and nHancer provides a lot of them) but for these new cards and rigs this isnīt a real issue. I also didnīt test these new settings with others old sims but the result shall be the same good one. And after all, i become to think if new Nvidia cards have really more FPS than new ATi cards with AA enabled or are just only cheats???

I will try to write a special guide for Nvidia&SH games&ImageQuality using nHancer and will post here.;)

Thanks again Periscope!

Doing that porks my sonar and radar displays-they come out all black, with a strange artifact in the lower left which is a distorted image of the radar screen.

Rubini,

Thanks for the research and looking forward for the how too. As newer video cards come out and drivers are updated you will find that "older games" will develop graphic problems. This has been inherently so with IL-2 and water rendering. Thanks to continued support from the developer those issues have been ironed out.

On the other hand for games that are no longer supported in that regard you have to decide on staying with older hardware and drivers or just living with visually poorer graphics and anomolies.

Eventually, in five years a state of the art PC will probably not be able to display SH3 or IL-2 in an acceptable manner. My theory anyway!

Hi Wilcke,

Yes, I agree. But SH3 and mainly SH4 aren't yet old games and nvidia runs well - the problem is the image quality (isn't a compatibility problem) that isn't at same level of the ATI cards out of the box. You need a 3rd part tweak to activate the SSAA - at expense of huge FPS hit - so, what Nvidia is hidden from the consumers? A big AA cheat to show more FPS on the hardware bench sites??? This is a question that don't want to go from my mind...:hmm:

Anyhow, for now, after this tweak I'm happy with it. :yep:

Rub...forgive me if I missed it but what VC are you using mate...

And I run a GF6600gt PCIE and this 3rd part program would help the grahics? And back in the day I also ran a Vodoo...still got it matter of fact

Hi mate; it's on the first post...I just built a new rig: E6850, Gygabyte P35 DS3, 8800GT 512, and a 26" LCD wide TVmonitor. My old card was a X800XTPE.

It's a very time consuming task, trial and error work. I'm also testing more than one of the new Nvidia drivers. I will then write the "guide" to our community and will post here. The main goal is very good image quality on Nvidia.
