A friend of mine just received a new copy of SH3 for Christmas. Short of installing it and checking with the device manager, how can he know if his copy is one of those bundled with StarForce or not? (He would prefer not infecting his machine first to find out.)

Thank you.

PS: I do not want this thread locked up. So, no one respond with directions or links to how to remove remove StarForce from SH3. Thanks, again.

There is no problem associated with posting a link to the StarForce removal rool site. It is a legitimate site. The only problem being, once you reinsert your disc (if it has StarForce included) the subject matter is once again installed. http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif

So, your suggestion is to install it first and see what happens?

Put your disc in the pc.....double click on My Computer....right click on whichever drive the disc is in and click on Explore.

install game(DO NOT RUN SH3 after INSTALLING!)
Starforce doesn't install when you install the game, SF is installed the FIRST TIME you RUN the SF protected game exe
install patch(DO NOT RUN SH3 after PATCHING!)
for same reason as above
use (Moderator edit:....WHAT???....)
this will work until there is an official patch to remove it

BUT PLEASE, ONLY USE A LEGITIMATE RETAIL COPY to INSTALL!

Good luck mate

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Sorry, laughing at myself. I've been reading half asleep, and when I first glanced at this line I nearly wet myself...I though it said "...checking with the divorce manager...":rotfl:

Stupid, I know; but I just had to share.

If it's a brand new version of SH3, it is more than likely already patched to 1.4b and (believe it or not) StarForce Free.:yep:

However, the only way to make 100% sure is to check the device manager after the first time run of the game.

Or......you might be able to view the installation files on the disk before installation, if you are comfortable opening the data.cab files (IIRC). I would suggest looking for logical names for protection etc.

Even the copy i purchased and downloaded from Direct2Drive last year had it. I had a helluva time reinstalling it when i wiped things in preparation for GWX 2, as Starforce said i didn't have a legitimate CD Key. Luckily i found a post with a fix for it from SF. I inquired with Direct2Drive and they said their d/l version now does NOT have SF installed on it.. so i re-downloaded it to avoid any more aggrevation.

Even if it doesn't fix it.. i now have the update from starforce that fixes the issue. The version i'm running now was the original that did have SF in it, and once i ran the update, it let me run it just fine.

Freakin SF....

I picked up a copy today of SH3. The game seems to be distributed by Focus Multimedia (http://www.focusmm.co.uk/shop/Silent-Hunter-III-pr-578.html) and the system requirements on the back list 2000/XP/Vista. There is no manual, map or quick reference card (all on the DVD). The DVD itself is black and white and has no key on it. I installed the game on my laptop, removed the disc and ran the game, which worked. On quitting, there was no evidence of Starforce drivers (which means I can run it on my Vista X64 machine :D).

Anyway, anybody wanting a Starforce free version of SH3, this seems to be the one to get (I picked mine up in Game, a large chain of stores in the UK for £9.99).

Hope this helps,
Stephen
