When sh4 came out I almost got an interview with a torpedoman
from redfin whos son was on here. but it fell through after the
first round of questions I never found out what happened either
but I fear maybe the worst sort of family crisis as they had a son
on the ground in Iraq. It was something I really wanted to do.
he was one of two fellows who did the boats paintjob further
he served the full duration on her. It I admit was a sterling
opportunity lost for the interview would have been for this
forum

Yes, many thanks for sharing that, Duci. Just spent the most time I've spent reading non-fiction in quite a while. I, too, am going to have to watch "The Enemy Below". Thanks again http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/digital_trucker/Smilies/TwoThumbsUp.gif

Parks: On Christmas Eve, 1942, the most memorable event in all the time I was in the war occured between New Guinea and New Britain. We were on the sirface at night ... almost midnight ... which would be Christmas day, when suddenly another submarine surfaces 1,000 yards astern. Everyone on the bridge clearly saw the sub because it surfaced in the moonlight. We quickly readied a torpedo, submerged, shot and sank the submarine. We never received credit for sinking it because no one saw it sink for sure, but we heard the hit, no question about that, and our sonar man heard the release of air associated with a sinking. I'll tell you, it was a cause for celebration that Christmas, but it was sobering for us because we realized it could have easily done the same to us.

Tell you what gents, I would have been dumping milk duds in my shorts if I had witness this! 1,000 yards off and a sub appears:o. Lucky Dinty Moore was cool as a cucumber!

Made me burn a couple of hours on the Old Gringo's really incredible website. The Japanese navy sure didn't sound toothless by his description. It sounded much closer to Trigger Maru standards than stock SH4. And the enemy submarine surfacing 1000 yards away is just hair-raising!
