I've been using the VIIB 39-41 then IXC to go on long distance patrols. Both models have served me well. I am now on GWX2.0 1940.

In the early days of playing this game I always used the type IX boats. But now I only use the type VII preferably the C varient. I like the quicker crash dive times.

IID all the way! Decks awash in a type II, you can crashdive faster than you can f12 to look at it ;)

Im torn between the Type VII/C and the Type IX/C, but if I had to choose I would go with the VII/C, as i've patrolled in that class more than any other type of
U-boat.

Type VIIB, it can go to 20kts once decked out with the latest engines.
But for late 1943, I choose the VIIC-41, because of the Radar absorbing material, and the other goodies that you cant get with the B.

I love the VIIC's, they just look like the classic WW2 u-boat that you'd imagine to be prowling the Atlantic. They just look better too, the saddle tanks give it a nice appearance

1st pick -IX/C with Weathered-58 Skin - Very good looking boat, well rounded in terms of performance (speed, diving time, endurance, etc) + more torpedoes for higher tonanage patrols (IX/B class were the highest scoring boats - on average 100K tons each).

2nd pick - VIIC/41 mod from cobalt - great looking model (love the life raft cannisters), c/41 diving depth.

It depends.

I love them all.

The Type IID makes for some really fun coastal raids.

The Type VII/C is, well, awesome.

The Type IXC has the range and power to cause havoc off the US coast, or extend my patrol SW of the UK by a large amount.

The Type XXI can be fun as hell, with quick reload speed, deep diving depth, and is just amazing all around.

So....Type IID. It's small size allows it to sneak into some of the more guarded areas. Limited torp sizes, but if you line up your shots right, you won't need more than 1 torp per ship.

Enchanter
12-28-07, 04:38 AM
Personally, if it has a German flag, a full load of torps and a target, I love her. ;)

But I agree, there is something so wonderfully anachronistic about captaining a type IID. Sure, in the back of your mind you know BdU didn't think you had the skills to fight in a REAL war, but it is a very quaint little boat.

The VII (I captain a VIIB most of the time) is also a lovely ship. A steady speed, and a deck gun make up for a smallish (compared to the IX) torpedo capacity.

I must say though that my careers tend to follow a pattern of, start in Type II as a young Kaleun with promise (previous comment about Type II nothwithstanding! )
and upgrade to VII/B. That already is a feeling of accomplishment. After I build up enough credibility I always imagine I've been transferred to another Flotilla because I was head hunted by the Commandant. I like to think I heard the screaming match between the two Flotilla commanders as they argued over who got me.

Thats when I get my IXC boat. It's such a good feeling knowing you've earned the right to command this ship. Then, empowered by this God-Complex, you take on ships and convoys with reckless abandon, for about 3 minutes before you realise as powerful as a IXC is, it aint DD proof. Or Cruiser proof. Or Battleship proof.... :nope:

I've never captained a XXI believe it or not... and I've been playing this game since it came out.

i just love the VIIb. i mean its fun to get all the upgrades with the VIIc, but a VIIb with an engine upgrade will do me just fine.

also love the IXC's for their long range capabilities.

and who couldent love the type II, small, has a nice feel to it. and trying to survive the war in a type II is a challenge.

Of the two u-boat types I've had the pleasure of commanding, I'd have to say my favorite is the VIIB. It's appreance is leaner than the VIIC and is more pleasing to my eye. I also like the slight edge in speed it has over the VIIC. Unfortunately, there will come a time when "upgrading" to the VIIC or one of the IX boats will become necessary just to have the equipment upgrades to make survival odds slightly better.

I really enjoyed my type IIA and the cozy feel of its smaller crew. Getting tonnage with very limited torpedo loadout was a challenge and striking targets in shallow waters was absolutely hair-raising when the escorts were hunting you in 40m of water.

One of these days I'd like to try a career in just the Type II boats and another one in the Type IX series.

In my current career, I was planning on moving to the XXI after the VIIC. Always wanted to try me one of them thar newfangled "Elektroboots".:D

I prefer the IXC myself...but if they had come early enough, I would play the XXI.

I like them big, fast, and with a lot of fish.

However, the nice part is this is only a game. If I had been doing it for real (thank goodness I didn't because I am claustrophic), I have a feeling I would have preferred the VIIC.

My personal favorite is the Type XXIII. Small, fast, very quick dives, with a limited torpedo load to make things challenging. Just the thing for harbor raiding, or perhaps layin' a smackdown in late '44 or early '45.:yep:

The one big problem: We don't have a playable XXIII :nope:.

At least, I haven't seen one available. I do know someone was working on it, but I keep checking for it and it isn't around.

I'd prefer having the XXIII to the XXI anyway: Only one or two XXI's actually went on a war patrol, too late to sink anything.

Several XXIII's made patrols, sinking 5 ships. The last two ships sunk by a U-boat in WWII were sink inside the Firth of Forth by a Type XXIII (same boat: Two torps, two kills).

Think about it, though: Those 6 boats went on (I believe) 10 operational patrols from January 1945 to May 1945.

I know some of the boats went on more than one patrol: U-2326 went on two: 19-27th of April 1945, and 4-14 May 1945. He had several destroyers and corvettes go right over top of him and not detect him.

U-2324, the first one to go on operational patrol, also managed two patrols, as did U-2322.

Collectively those 6 boats sank 5 ships altogether in 10 patrols, with no operational losses. That is quite a record considering the time period and the limitation of 2 torpedoes.

The first XXIII boat was launched in April of 1944. Certainly, that opens up the possibility of attacking the D-Day invasion fleet, and surviving. I think I tried attacking them when I first got GWX, and I promptly had pieces of my stern handed back to me in a rather attractive gift-wrapped box, tied up with a fancy bow.

Let's compare the record of the XXI, on the other hand:

Only two went on war patrols, and they sank nothing. Schnee did set up on a task force, but he had already received the surrender message, and didn't attack.

Ideally, we should have both the XXI and the XXIII available for late war patrols, but if I had to give up one for the other, I'd give up the XXI for the XXIII.

Just my humble opinion, of course...

I'm in love with the Type IX boats, especially the IXBs. The other boats have their advantages but I just really feel at home in a Type IXB submarine. I like the feeling of being able to go on extremely long patrols. The IXB is a much bigger boat so you really ARE a captain of a ship.

If I had to use another boat besides the Type IXB, it would be the Type VIIB. That boat is like an athlete; it can do 8 knots underwater, has a steady surface speed, and is very very maneuverable. Looks nice too, like a shark.

Who can go wrong with an IXB? 21 eels, long range, a beautiful ship, and you can stack it up with the IX-3 conning tower for extra protection against nasty airplanes, and more firepower when going head-to-head against other ships. Although I think I'm the only one on this website who is crazy enough to go head-on against warships. Not exactly submarine captain's behavior, but I haven't found any good naval sims that let you captain a warship yet!
