one screw vs two screws question

I just got into the VIIC boat & it seems to operate just as the type IID did in reference to crash diving & screw operation...at least on my computer...

On the surface & recharting batteries you will have one screw running...This is normal...you will also be running about 3-4 knots so that you can use the second enging to charge batteries..

When you have to do a crash dive while in this configuration I have read that the second engines screw should start turning as you go all ahead flank.

On my computer (GWX 1.3) only one screw continues turning for the dive..
There is also quite a bit if difference in dive times.

I.E...

Recharging batteries, one screw turning, 4 kts. Hit the "C" key.. dive time = :38 seconds

Standard Propulsion, two screws turning, 8 kts. hit the "C" key..dive time 19 seconds.

This is quite a bit of difference...two props turning mo-betta then one me thinks...lol..

When you hit the crash dive key isn't the second prop suppose to start turning also?

I asked this question before, but never got anything definate.

Perhaps someone else could go on recharge & hit the "c" key & see if both props start turning or not. If they do, then my GWX 1.3 install must be broke...

If you're recharging batteries it will impair diesel efficiency, I agree that a crash dive should cancel this and apply the full power of the diesels to pushing your boat under water,

However, this is not moddeled in the game, the stop recharging order is not linked to the C key with the crashdive order, if you want full efficiency for your crash-dive take the extra second to tell your Chief Engineer to stop charging batteries, then press C, this will solve the problem.:up:

Personally when crahsdiving, I first order ahead flank, then wait a few seconds for the boat to get up proper acceleration, then crashdive...:cool: this can be done if you have RWR, or against ships not when a plane is already attacking

There is a technical reason why crashdiving on one diesel is the right thing to do when recharging batteries. this is because the gearing involved in routing the diesel through an electric engine and using that was fairly complex and couldn't be switched back in a few seconds...

I can't substantiate this from any sources, :hmm: I read it somewhere some time ago, I'm sure one of the real U-boat technology-buffs can tell you more about this.

Unfortunately in SH3, as players we don't have "full" control of the engines in an independant fashion... and it is another limitation that we are stuck with. (In all fairness to the SH3 devs... if they tried to model everything we'd still be waiting on SH3 be released today.) We are not able to 'mod' this to be any different.

In SH3 the only way to have both screws turning when a crash dive is needed while recharging your batteries, is to disengage from recharge mode and select standard propulsion prior to the crash dive.

I thought the screws were not mechanically linked to the diesels, they turned generators that powered the screws, ie port diesel did not solely turn the port screw, the power was routed through a central switchboard, one diesel could turn both screws while the other one was charging? surely trailing a screw would lead to a tendency to yaw?

I think that would be the American boats in the Pacific, as I understand it they were diesel-electric in the way you mention. I think the German boats were different.

Single screw scenario duly noted and new standard procedure put into the boat emergency procedures manual...

Assuming at least 30m under boat...hopefully lots & lots more then 30M though...lol..

1. ALARRRRM! aircraft bearing 316 (in process of charging batteries)
2. Clear that transparent window by clicking "do nothing"
3. Engineer icon, Standard propulsion icon
4. Emergency icon Crash dive!
5. Pray

And back to reality: when a crash dive was ordered the very first thing they did was shut the diesels down, NOT go to flank on the diesels. Unless of course you like the idea of taking on extra water through the engine intakes.
