It must be a Kieler boat (Killer??):rotfl: :rotfl: Uarrr harrr harrff. --a U booot on the Kiel Canal (sorry, couldn't resist
Well since there was only 14 type IXB commissioned, that narrows the choices down a bit.
U-64 (http://www.uboat.net/boats/u64.htm), U-65 (http://www.uboat.net/boats/u65.htm), U-103 (http://www.uboat.net/boats/u103.htm), U-104 (http://www.uboat.net/boats/u104.htm), U-105 (http://www.uboat.net/boats/u105.htm), U-106 (http://www.uboat.net/boats/u106.htm), U-107 (http://www.uboat.net/boats/u107.htm), U-108 (http://www.uboat.net/boats/u108.htm), U-109 (http://www.uboat.net/boats/u109.htm), U-110 (http://www.uboat.net/boats/u110.htm), U-111 (http://www.uboat.net/boats/u111.htm), U-122 (http://www.uboat.net/boats/u122.htm), U-123 (http://www.uboat.net/boats/u123.htm), and U-124 (http://www.uboat.net/boats/u124.htm).
I looked at the insignia at <http://www.uboataces.com> but not sure if the dark blob on the port side of the tower is the insignia or not on this boat, as none seemed to fit especially well.
(The dark blob might an ace of spades, or ace of clubs, like the training insignia, which was a white spade, but the resolution isn't that good to make it out).
It could perhaps be U-106 if the insignia instead is the faint V-lines on front of the tower, if that was its location? (crossed chains with a pair of fish at either end)
All in the list given above except U-104 & U-122 are listed, and <http://uboat.net/special/emblems/no_emblem.htm>
says these two lacked insignia.
(uboataces.com also lists U-119 as an IXB, which uboat.net lists as an XB, so someone made a typo. Commissioning/sinking dates differ as well...)

yeah, that's right. if you blow it up its a black spade.
Well, of all the insignia listed, I only found one black ace of spades, but it belongs to U-181, an IXD2, and the tower is different from that type in this picture.
(Unless the tower was changed during its service life? It says it had an accident with the new 37mm cannon in -43, so maybe if that required a tower modification, then the picture could be earlier).
Otherwise the dark blob is something else, not a spade.

Well if it's a spade it's likely not a wartime emblem but an emblem from the shipyard. I'd venture to say this is either U-104 or U-108 in the hands of the UAK not long after her commisioning. They're the only two Deschimag IXB's that wore a spade. If she's actually a IXC with this conning tower configuartion that of course expands the possibilities somewhat.
If anyone is more certain I'd be very curious. I've been secretly hoping it might be U65 as I'd like to find more pictures of the boat but it seems unlikely.
Cheers.
Any chance of a higher resolution scan?
That's not a IXB at all. It's a IXD, just look at the bulging sides (saddle tanks).

Was hoping for a more convinced party to state something of the sort. :) I was wondering about the length beyond the conning tower anyway. Seemed a little long.

Thats what i was thinking. Its a bit too wide to be an IXB. Something about the main deck grating puts me off a bit too. I think its an early photo of U-181 if that is a spade on the tower. Just FYI, not all boats had the latest design in conning towers. If you dig around enough, you'll find a picture of a uboat in penang harbor with a turm 1 tower.
