View Full Version : Human Powered Sub Video and Vimeo
I just found this video hosting site Vimeo.com (http://www.vimeo.com). It's much better than youtube and the others. First there is no time limit, like youtube's 10 minutes, for video length. Second it posters to post in HD. The only limit is that videos have to be under 500 mg and you can only post 500mg per week, counter is reset every Sunday.
The only challenge i had is that the standard up-loader tool seems to time out when uploading over 100mg however if you use http://vimeo.com/upload/babyface there isn't a problem.
Here's my example: It's video from sea trials for a submarine I worked on in college. enjoy.

I'm sure some members are allready aware but I thought I'd share.

Not very good.
First why are yall getting in at sea? with scuba tanks on?! All that does it cause a mess.
2nd the craft is way too small and unless I am missing somthing then this is actually less effective than just swimming out to what you want to look at.
Next time you build a sub. Pressurize it and keep the crew dry. Install lighting and other things connected to a small battery recharged by the person who provides the propulsion. Make it to where it can atleast outperform the Hunley.
Edit: And next time please don't throw a copyrighted song in just for extra points. Use public domain or creative commons music.

It's for the international submarine races (http://www.isrsubrace.org/). It is not an exploration sub it's sole purpose is to go fast. The first races were held in open water in Ft' Lauderdale. since the they have been moved to the David E Taylor Model Basin (http://www.asme.org/Communities/History/Landmarks/David_Taylor_Model_Basin_1939.cfm)in MD. The original race required contestant to run an obstacle course the sub in the video holds the record for this type of race and was in the guinness book of records.
As for performance the Henley requires 8 men and can reach 4 knots surfaced. we reach 6 with only one mad powering.

Oh sorry I had thought this sub actually was for use and not for show. Sad really :nope:
Considering Hunley was Civil War tech and could Dive more than a few feet then that is no excuse. But then again this is for a silly race. What is a better use for funds is a sub that can take college students to good depths to do science while not relying on the short ranges of simple batteries. A human recharged sub is a great idea in my view.
Any plans to build a good sub?

You bump up a topic to post somthing stupid? Next time leave the ego crap out of it and post somthing reasonable. Or don't post at all.
No I don't have a Sub. No need where I live.
That is unnecessarily impolite Zach and out of line with friendly atmosphere I think
most of us would like to keep in this forum.

I think it is you who is posting silliness, Zachstar. I saw a link to this thread in another one in which you saw fit to dismiss others opinions as 'crap'. I'm not being egotistical, far from it. I think swifty deserves respect for what he has done, rather than a petty post resembling something like "This isnt the coolest submarine in the world, it sucks!"
You obviously know precious little about how this community works, and your method of dismissal of other people's posts only proves my point. You should show more respect towards the people who have both been here longer than you, and dare I say garner more respect from the community than you do, you can learn alot from them. I have, and I like to think I have gained the respect of many on this forum. I think its time for you to step back and find other means of transmitting your point.

Um no thanks... My posting is just fine.
As for my understanding. I have been on this forum for quite some time. (Note the timeline of my posts. I was involved as one of the first SH3 addon production projects (A group that lasted for a few weeks headed by me. It was out of place when SH3 was not out yet) and I have been on another International forum (Orbiter forums) for longer. I am quite understanding of the way forums work thank you...
You posted in a topic that had dropped down some distance just to drop a ego depth charge. Do not try hiding it as a passive question. It was a completely loaded statement trying to state that I have no room to talk because I have no sub.
Sorry if I am not like some of the others that just accepts being minupulated. Go bother someone else!

Okay, first of all, being on a SH3 addon production is great and all, but I'm talking about interacting with everyone on the forums. I like to think I have gained some respect from people here from the fact that I can post a disagreement with their view without being dismissive.
As for your 'ego depth charge' line, exactly where is my own personal gain in this? I personally found your remarks to swifty quite unreasonable. Would you have preferred if I had said it a different way? Look at it this way - the way you addressed swifty was unacceptable. This forum prides itself on being honest, and quite frankly, building your own submarine is pretty damned cool, regardless of its functionality.
And as for being 'manipulated', no. I'm not manipulated. If I were, I'd have let this rest and allowed this disrespect to have passed. I take pride in the time and money I have invested in this place, and I take pride in the people I have met and whom I consider close friends. This isnt manipulation, this is someone speaking out for the mistreatment of one of their friends.

It isn't mistreatment. Its a statement. The mistreatment is the copyrighted song in the video that people seem to feel is quite cool doing these days even tho mothers are being sued for downloading music.
I think it is uncool when resources in this situation are used to get into a record book instead of exploring. A homemade sub dosent have to face a torpedo attack so speed is meaningless. Its duration (Air), depth, range and of course how much science can it do.
My question stands. When will a submarine by this group be made with exploration and science in mind?

So your gripe with swifty is mainly because of a copyrighted song?
And do you fail to see how groundbreaking a homemade submarine is?

No

If you could just scale it back along the width 100px. Causes the forum to extend past the length of my window. Makes things a little annoying to read.

Cool vid Swifty... and the ZZ Top stuff was a nice touch... I'm certified both in PADI and NAUI as a Divemaster and would have loved to been in on that project.
What was the final outcome of the sea trials? Did it meet its operational requirements?

Apparently the aim was to build the fastest and it came first place. A successful submarine project if you ask me.
Well done.
And Zachstar, if they were making a profit from the video the copyrighted song would have been a bad thing but the makers obviously aren't going to sell this video so lighten up a bit mate.

No thanks. I think it is HIGHLY unfair and crap.
A mother can be sued for downloading some old tunes supposedly and be made to pay thousands. Yet when someone posts the latest rap tracks and pop music in their videos nothing happens?
What was the budget for this project?
It's very impressive!

Actually that was an older sub we brought out of moth balls. The video shot that day just us playing around and getting a feel for how it preformed in open water. For that sub after being striped, building new hatches, applying a new gel-coat and building a new prop. the team was able to place second in it's class at ISR and set an personal best speed, not bad for a 16 year old sub. I'm hoping a new call can come up with the time and resources to build a new one.

I guess you just don't get it. It's for competition focused at undergraduate engineering students. The competition has risen to the point that it requires advance engineering in order to produce a winning sub. the current leading sub utilizes computational fluid dynamics to generate hulls shape and control surfaces, uses advance composites for construction and has an electronic variable pitch propeller. It's a great learning experience the lessons learned from the competition are later applied towards students careers in design from fast attack subs to AUVs to deep submersibles.
I don't know what world you live in but here in the real world I don't see how an undergraduate class can build a exploration submarine in their spare time. The subs in the competition are intramural projects/sports all money has to be raised by the participating students. Usually student are able to get material donated and the subs cost around 5,000. In comparison the next generation three-person Deep Submergence Vehicle (DSV) that is to replace the Alvin is estimated to cost $21.6 million and will take any where from 5 to 10 years to design, build, and test before it is finally operational, this is with a full team of experienced engineers, mechanics, machinists, certified welders and support staff. Building a submarine is very complected. Pressure hulls require a lot of design work and testing especially when peoples lives are a stake.
Your free to your opinion but if you don't know any thing about a subject stay the hell out.

I understand what you are saying but it's like you're having it two ways???
You don't want mothers being sued but you do want people who post music on videos to be sued... As the saying goes... Please explain??
And anyone who puts rap in a video shouldn't just be sued, they should be beaten with a lead pipe. ;):p:rotfl:

Im saying that if this video posting of music is to be allowed to continue than the copyright system needs to be abolished.
If the RIAA wants to continue the sue game than they need to include these videos as well. Atleast it will make more consider independent artists or public domain works.

Why? If record companies left illegal downloading go unchecked then eventually they would no longer be able to turn a profit. There is no reason for them to go after someone who makes a home video and uses a track from their music library. The video is not going to make a profit so there noting to collect on. A law suit will end up costing the record company more money than they could get from the individual and finally it's advertising for the song if any thing it will get more people to hear it and if they like it might buy it. Also in a lot of cases one can argue the song in the video was a parody which is fair use.
Under copyright laws it is illegal for a store to play music or show a video without permission from the owner. However no one ever sues the stores because it free advertising. Under your reasoning blockbuster should not be allowed to show movies in the store.
Ultimately it is the owners right to decide how copyright law is applied.

The no profit arguement is THE 100 percent bullcrap excuse used by just about every software and movie/music pirate I have ever seen.
And just because someone does it in a store dosent give you any reason to put it in your movies. That logic is totally bogus.
I am against the RIAA and unfair copyright law. Unfair as in the lack of action against videos on these video sites. Yet just as willing to sue children and dead people.
Fair use dosent extend into openly using a song on a video.

So you want legal action to be taken against people who put copyrighted music on a home video, yet are against the organisation that actually handles said legal action?

How did you decide who got to be the pilot?
How did you decide who got to be the pilot?
It came down to the skinniest person who is comfortable in the water and not clostrophic. I tried but my shoulders were way to broad. The girl at the end of the video tried it but got scared and some how able to bail out without the stroker even knowing until 15 yards later.
Powering the sub has to be one of the most physically demanding this I have ever done. First you lay on you stomach so gravity doesn't help you like a bike. Second you are breathing through a regulator and are unable to use you nose so you a limited O2 intake. For the race we had an ex navy diver as the stroker.
