U-Boot Sinks Rodney! (GWX 2)
11 November 1939, Atlantic west off Scotland.
On His first patrol and first torpedo attack Ltnt z. S. J.S. Balz sank the heavily escorted British Battleship while under attack by British destroyers.
The BDU spokesman stated, "What makes this case unusual, is that the U boot was surprised by a destroyer half an hour prior to the arrival of the convoy. U-Boot Kommandant Balz, despite being hounded by depth charges rose to periscope depth and fired two torpedoes at the British Leviathan. The Battleship sank within minutes. Balz skillfuly evaded the angry escorts bent on revenge.
In a radiogram sent from the U-Boot, Balz said, "You either have hoochie woochie or you don't.
