Kaluens,
This is an old issue. BUT I cant find any posts using the search engine in regards to this. So...
Whats up with the crash to desktop while in mid combat with a convoy? :damn:
I can reload the game fine but it gets to a certain stroke of the clock and CRASH!!
No matter what I try, where I run to hide in my boat, the inevitable crash still comes.
And yes it seems to happen when submerged.
Im am running GWX 2, SH3 with just Torp dmg mod and a uboat skin mod and thats it. I believe I have had this issue occurr when I didnt use any mods.
Luckily I save alot and only have to go back maybe 1 save to get my game back but still... would be nice to avert this nonsense.

When you get CTD'd a pop up box will appear saying SilentHunter had to close
There is a " click here " line below
Click that and will give you the error
Simdata
Sim.act
Kernel.dll
Etc
That will help narrow it down

Kaluen BBWooly,
There is no way on gods green earth that I can possibly write all that crap down!
Hundreds of lines of gobbledeegook in a teeny tiny window with no way to cut and paste all of it. Heres what I could get from my event error log dunno if it helps at all.

Ok I have been watching carfeully and it seesm to be an attacking issue. For example In mid convoy, I am lining up a shot on a Empire type freighter and a Dido class. I shoot the empire, he sinks, one eel. Im lining up the Dido class and thats when I CTD with the above error. So what I did was, I didnt shoot the empire and just sank the Dido class and NO CTD. So go figure. At that point I guessed the convoy was bugged maybe or that ship...so I sailed away leaving a completely unescorted convoy ripe with juicy targets to steam away.
I proceeded with my mission with no further incident till meeting up with the next convoy. After sinking an escort and chasing after another wammo CTD. So I reloaded a save from 15 mins earlier and that CTD. So I realoaded one from 20 mins b4 that and it also crashed. How is this thing following me back through time and F'ing up my earlier saves. WTF!! :damn:

I've had the same problem. Almost to a "T".
The game has crashed four times on four consecutive nights. I have yet to complete my first patrol! Very frustrating as I've been a couple of hours into the patrol & looking forward to some serious convoy action.
Each time the game has crashed I've been submerged. Each has occured during a convoy attack. I read up on this last night, prior to the last crash. Someone mentioned a stock SH3 bug that CTD's while doing crew management when submerged. I believe the second to last crash occured when I did a "submerged cruise" command. Last night it crashed when I was manually managing the crew. I've forgotten the circumstances of the first couple of crashes, other than that I was involved with a convoy attack. Last night I meant to save the error details but I can't find out where the log is stored. (Anyone who knows, tell me how to find them and I'll post the pertinent details.)
I'm also running GWX 2 and the only other mods I have are a couple of sub skins.
I'm sailing in a TypeVIIB.
I don't recall this many CTD's with any other mod enabled or with the stock game.
I certainly hope that help is on the way as I spent a LOT of time getting GWX set up. It appears to be a fantastic mod and I'd hate to have to remove it.
(Update: I finally finished my first patrol. I made sure to rollback SH3 Commander, then I uninstalled/installed a few GWX mods as well as the Torpedo Damage Final. No troubles, but I saved often, always while on the surface.)
its a viic

I dont know if this will help... you might already have done these things.
Shut down explorer and antivirus. Defrag computer. I usually defrag before every game. Add memory to computer if you havent already. Get a 512mb video card.
I hope some of this helps. I used to have the same problems until I switched my video card. Also get rid of unnecessary programs that take up your computers memory.

Oh Christ!
ANOTHER CTD last night. Not once, but twice.
The first one wasn't so bad since I had only sunk one ship and it was only 11:30pm.
The last one was EXTREMELY frustrating as I had spent the better part of an hour (1:15am - 2:30am) doing battle with a large convoy. I had sunk three ships (two warships!) and was in the process of sneaking away when . . .
. . . the black screen of death.
NOOOOOO!!!
My wife was mad enough that, once again, I was sneaking into bed after midnight since beginning to re-play SHIII, but the fact that I screamed loud enough to wake the household at 2am means I'll be cooking my own dinner tonight.
These crashes are totally unsat. Thankfullly, my last save should allow me to find the same convoy once again . . . but I'm begginning to wonder if its worth it.
The latest two crashes occured as I was viewing the boat in 3D via the "," key.
I'll remove ALL mods and simply play the stock GWX 2.0 tonight. (BTW, all of the mods that I'm using were either packaged with GWX or are "GWX compatible". Or, are they?)
PLEASE HELP! If it happens again I'm quitting GWX for good.
(I NEVER had these crashes with stock SHIII . . . I suppose I could go back to that but it seems so droll after getting a toe wet with GWX.)

Where the warships already sunk or on way down ?
There is an issue with the armed trawler - will locaye the fix link for you
What boat was you watching ?
Yours or target ?
If target what was it
I've also had 3 CTDs, and all when approaching/attacking an armed trawler...
Seems like this is now a known bug..

The warships had already sunk. I hit each with a lucky shot. Destroyers.
The convoy had moved to the horizon but one, lone escort was hunting me down.
I believe it was a destroyer that might've been hunting me. It could'be been one of the tubby ones. I've forgotten the nomenclature . . . but as I recall it was a legit destroyer.
As I recall, I had come out of silent running at about thirty feet to hit flank speed & dive deeper as the escort passed. I was veiwing my sub externally as it went into the dive. I may have been giving the order to return to silent running . . . but I think not. Either way . . . bam. The music sticks, the screen goes black and my mind goes numb. Next, the error message and I fail to repress a murderous scream.
The only thing that seems to tie all of my CTD's together is that I was submerged and there was a convoy in the vicinity.
I forgot to save the error message. Or, I simply shut down in disgust.
If it happens again I will be sure to recored the error.

Thanks for the armed trawler patch. I had no idea that was available. Hope it helps.
I also think I might've found one source of a problem . . . if not the problem.
I went to check out the SH3 Update that you've linked in your sig. Turns out I already have it. However, I also discovered that I might not have installed it correctly. I unzipped the files to my SH3Commander/cfg folder, as instructed. I must've also done this in the Silent Hunter/Data/Cfg directory as well since I found a folder in there with the update files in it. I wonder if that folder has anything to do with the problems I've been experiencing?
Also, I checked to see if my system needed defragmenting. It doesn't. However, I've been doing a Disk Cleanup now for about the last hour. Jeeez its taking a looong time to "compress old files". I've had this PC for three years & I don't think I've ever used Disk Cleanup! Maybe this'll make evvverything work better.
We shall see.
Cripes a fault like this could be anything, most errors that I have are compatability with various modded items such as graphics & sounds, most other faults such as ini will come up with the SH3 box as BBW mentioned. For example I created with a very old version of Wavelab some sounds/speech in ogg format, ran fine on one system, ran fine on all systems in windows (not in game), however CTD & even total reboot in my (now old) system in the game, probably the type of onboard sound/card.:-? I later purchased Sound Forge & allways works 100%. What happened in game was that all went ok till that particular sound was called on then whammo! This also applies to grahics, a ship/plane may suddenly appear that your system doesn't like and CTD!!:damn: So you have to try and see ahead, by checking navmap screen as to what is coming before it becomes visable!:yep:
This may not apply here but has happened to me for sure.:x

Ok, here's my latest :damn: .
Last night I completed a successful attack on a convoy. This was a big deal since I had spent 75% of the patrol (and about two hours real-life-time) searching in vain through rough seas. I successfully evaded the escorts and sloowwwly rose to the surface. Once on the surface I saved the game. Not long after that I quit the game after running out of fuel. Bummer . . . but I figure I saved it so I can start from the save and try to make a neutral port.
I go to restart and the damn game hangs at the "A long time ago . . . " screen. After a few minutes I get the BSOD (Black Screen of Death) and the familiar error popup.
I figure I'll try again tomorrow. Well, it's tomorrow and the game still crashes at the same spot.
WTF!?!?! I've got about a week left before I give up. It seems as though I've never gotten through a gaming session without a crash. I've never gotten through a patrol without one. I've had to restart & reload campaigns constantly. After three weeks with the mod I've only completed one cruise and I'm having serious technical trouble getting through the second. This is totally unsat.
Anyhow, I just found out about Error Logging. Here's the text of the SH3 errors so far (in order from most recent):
This one is the "A Long Time Ago . . . " hang/crash. I've had three of these since 2:04am, last night.

Then there are three more, two are similar in that I believe they happened while submerged, near a convoy. The last one occured while I was cruising on the surface. I was away from the PC for dinner so I'm not sure what occured just prior to the crash. All I know is that I left the sub running in 3D on the surface & when I returned from dinner about a half hour later, the screen was blank. Whenever I skip out to the galley for some chow I always turn the volume up just in case there's an alert. I can hear it in the kitchen, dining room or living room. I heard nothing.

Sorry for filling this thread up with lots of boring technical info. I'm just hoping that someone will know how to read it so that we can divine an answer. I REALLY, REALLY want to enjoy this fantastic game and Grey Wolves Mod. Unfortunately, my patience is wearing thin.
Not being any kind of techie . . . I do see "faulting module sound.act" as a common error. Could part of the problem be with my sound card or files, as Reece seems to suggest?
I have a HUUUGE gramaphone file with some of those .oog files, a ton of .mp3's and who knows what else (actually, I've posted screenshots of my gramaphone folder in a "music" thread around here). I guess I could try cleaning that thing out. (I just removed the .oog files, the .ram files and one .wav file. Now there are only .mp3's in there.)

Hmmm
I notice quite a few of those CTD are sound.act related
You definately dont have any other sound mods enabled ?
Can you lower the hardware acceleration on the sound too ?
Was the gramaphone on at the time of these CTDs ?
TheBlackHand
01-09-08, 05:14 PM
I noticed the sound thng thing too.
Yes, the gramaphone was on during each of these crashes. I've also noticed while running at high time compression (512 & above) that the game will freeze for a few seconds from time to time. During these freezes the song will skip. I think this occured with stock SH3 as well so it might just be part of the game. I've set my max time compression at 2600(?).
I don't have any sound mods enabled, other than what came with stock GWX.
I did have some of the old radio mods loaded into the gramaphone. I've taken them out.
I will try reducing the sound card acceleration & see if all of these changes fix anything.
I've given up hope of restarting my saved game. It seems it will not load under any circumstances. Always hanging at the "A long time ago . . . " screen. The command room never comes into view. Just another dissapointment. Ho-hum.
I concur with BB, if you have ANY sound mods enabled try disabling them, if not lower the hardware sound acceleration a couple of notches, also try updating your sound card drivers.
The ones you have within the crew screen what where you doing? I recall a stock CTD problem when using the crew presets.
Ref
1) As BBW & Ref said, it could be your gramaphone these are ogg files as I mentioned earlier, try running without playing the gramaphone.
2) If it still fails I've never tried this but if it's possabe disable the sound, in game and test or temporarily disable the system sound, run game and see what happens.
3) If stock 1.4b runs ok then if you have a backup of your sound folder copy stock version over the top & try, as I said in my previous post your system may not like some of the new ogg files.:-?

Enough.
Now I can't even load ANY of my saves. They ALL hang at the "Not so long ago . . ." screen.
Ef it. I give up.
I'm ripping the whole damn thing off my system. I'll reinstall and try again.
What a pain.

I just spent all flippin night (9:30pm -0 1:30am) uninstalling/reinstalling/uinstalling/reinstalling.
Now, four hours later I'm finally ready to fire up my FRESH installation of GWX and what happens . . . IT FRICKING CRASHES ON THE LOAD SCREEN.
So, my problem has gone from bad to worse. Used to be it just crashed four hours into the game . . . now I can't even GET into the game.
This is really unbelieveable.
First of all, I couldn't figure out whether I had the European or US version. Turns out I have the European version (bought off Ebay). So, I made a fresh download of all the patches from v1.1 - 1.4b. My clean installation showed 1.4 in the lower corner. I assume this is correct.
Stock SH3 starts up just fine.
Then I installed GWX. I ran allll the files through the mod checker thingy to make sure they werent corrupt. They weren't. I followed all the instructions for installation at the GWX page. I did GWX 2.0 first, then I did 1.03, then I setup SH3 Commander, making sure to cut & paste the proper updates into the .cfg folder. I made a few option changes via SH3 Commander. Then I loaded a few of the GWX mods via JSGME. Then I started GWX via SH3 Commander. The GWX load screen shows 1.03. About 3/4 of the way through . . . CRASH! Black screen. Error.
So, I rollback SH3 Commander, uninstall all mods and try again. Same thing.
So, I rollback SH3 Commander and try to start the game with the GWX desktop icon. Crash.
So, I try starting via the regular SH3 Icon. Guess what? Crash.
So . . . should I just quit.
This is NO FUN AT ALL.

I just uninstalled SH3 Commander via add/remove programs. Then I deleted the SH3 folder in My Documents. Then I started GWX again. This time it got all the way to the end of the bar . . . before the screen went blank and it crashed to the gaddamn desktop.
Tomorrow I uninstall/reinstall ONE MORE TIME and that is IT.
One more day and I'm DONE with this.
You are having a fun time I think not! If your install now dies at loading then I would uninstall GWX 2 then uninstall SH3, now reinstall & patch to 1.4b, now check that SH3 stock now runs correctly, if it does & you have a DVD burner copy the whole game (SilentHunterIII folder) to the DVD as a clean stock 1.4b backup, it comes in handy!:yep:
Then install GWX 2, do not install SH3 Commander yet, now try running game and check for errors.
If the old errors are back then please do the following:
1) Copy the whole SH3 GWX 2 data folder to a temp folder.
2) Uninstall GWX & copy the stock version from DVD back to SilentHunterIII folder, it is now stock 1.4b. (no reinstalling)
3) Now copy the contents of the GWX 2 Sound folder to your stock Sound folder, try running game again if the error occurs then it is a sound problem with probably 1 or more ogg files.
I will keep checking back & you can allways PM me, we will get this licked.:yep:
Good Luck!:D

I followed all the instructions for installation at the GWX page. I did GWX 2.0 first, then I did 1.03, then I setup SH3 Commander, making sure to cut & paste the proper updates into the .cfg folder.
Seriously dude!
Where does it say on the GWX Homepage to install GWX 2.0 and then add 1.03 over it?:rotfl:
Don't mean to laugh and I feel your pain in getting it working but version numbers are there for a reason. Usually, there are progressive.;)
Surely not that Dan, I read that and assumed a typo, no one would install a new version then downgrade it!
I did 1.03, then I setup SH3 Commander I assume he installed SH3 Commander 1.03 then setup (referring to SH3 Commander)!:yep:

01-10-08, 04:52 AM
What's SH3 Commander 1.03 then??? Do you mean the 1.03 configs?
Shouldn't be using those either.;)
Sorry Reece mate, I'm leaning towards my previous guess.
It happens all to regularly when someone is excited or frustrated, mistakes happen. The only thing to do is to slowly and deliberately go through step by step.
I can't remember the versions of SH3 Commander, but if your correct .... Shock horror, no wonder He's having problems, doesn't add up though, why not just install 1.03 or 2.0, Oh well there ya go!:yep::rotfl:
TheBlackHand
01-10-08, 12:53 PM
Real quick . . . I based that installation (2.0 then 1.03) on a post that I read somewhere around here. Now I can't find it. Arrrghh! Anyhow, I thought it odd too . . . but the guy was from the GWX team so I figured he knew what he was talking about. It was after midnight and I was near burned out. Yep, mistakes happen.
I'm hoping it really is this simple (and stupid).
I'm getting ready to go through the process again.
Here's what I'm gonna do:
Complete uninstall of SH3
Restart
Reinstall to 1.4b
Install GWX
Install the trawler patch.
Install SH3 Commander & apply the GWX .cfg's.
I don't have a DVD burner, but I did copy the stock, patched SH3 installation to a temp directory as a backup.
Heeerrre goes!
(If this works it'll be a lesson in "follow directions thoroughly" and "nothing good is easy".)

I refuse to reinstall and start yet another career... and have taken no corrective action and...
My CTD problem has mostly gone away (knock wood) I have not CTD in 3 Patrols now. Mine was not a gramaphone nor trawler issue.
But was very similar to Blckhands problem always crashing just as the game was starting to appear in the background. It was quite the sucktasticness, so I feel his pain. :damn:
But hang in there bro youll get it sorted out and be on your way soon.

Okay! So far so good. I've been able to load the mod successfully and have completed three of the Naval Academy exams. I'll finish those exams in the next hour and this evening I'll embark on my first patrol.
The only glitch that I seem to be having is the problem with ambient sounds/no voices. On the bridge I hear all of the sound effects except voices and some of the sounds sound are muffled. The deck gun, for example, sounds like a BB gun. As if it has a silencer attatched. The officers lips move, but I hear nothing (kind of like when my wife talks).
I've lowered my sound card acceleration by one. Also, in SH3 Commander I set my max time compression to 2048. I also had set the "Sound Effects" compression to 1. Although, I have no idea what that would do. It was set to 2 by default. I'm guessing, based on other threads, that messing with that sound compression thing is what might've caused my sound problems. Not sure. Anyway, I rolled SH3 Commander back & reset that particular thing back to 2. We'll see what happens.
So, unless something ELSE goes wrong and I can fix that sound glitch . . . I'm hoping for a smooth trip from here on out.
The lesson then would be, follow the damned directions.

I have had similar sound related issues with SH3 1.4b + GWX 2.0.
Just for the hell of it, I uninstalled my sound card drivers, rebooted, and then re-installed them.
99% of my troubles seem to have disappeared!
The remaining 1% is caused by too many ambient sound effects playing at once and making the game hang for several seconds on the map screen when using time compression greater than 64x.
I don't really need to hear the crew coughing, farting, and sniffling in chorus with the hull creaking and gurgling in two part harmony. Is there any way to remove certain sound effects to reduce the burden on my system?

Well, I had hoped to be able to report back with "no news is good news". Unfortunately, I have bad news.
After a lengthy uninstall/reinstall I thought I had things working out. I thoroughly installed SH3/GWX/SH3 Commaneder CORRECTLY. I completed all of the training exercises. I fixed the sound problem. I completed one patrol in a new career. I saved/reloaded a couple of times during that patrol.
Now, I've endured a dissapointing and diffucult second patrol. I've been at this patrol for about five hours. I'm limping back to base after being nearly killed in a convoy attack that took me an hour or so to escape from. It's late (2:30am), and time for bed. I surface the sub and save the game that I've put soooo much time and effort into.
Today I look forward to restarting, making it home, rewarding my crew and beginning a new patrol this evening.
So, I attempt to load the last save. EFFING CRASH TO THE G*DA#N DESKTOP AT THE FRIGGIN "NOT SO FLIPPIN' LONG AGO" SCREEN.
Dissapointed, I seek answers at this forum. Seems others have had this problem. The best answer I could find was to try loading previous saves. Hey, that sucks, but at least I can have another go at the convoy that got away.
I try loading previous saves from the same patrol. NONE WORK. Sounds like I'm going to have to try starting the whole patrol again . . . if I can. If I even have the desire after WASTING so much time already with this game/mod.
Just for the heck of it I try loading a single mission. Of course, it starts just fine.
Nothing changed with the game since I successfully loaded the last save of the same career.
There is nothing wrong with my installation. I don't believe there is anything wrong with my system. I do belive that there is something wrong with the mod . . . or something.
It seems I am allergic to GWX 2.0.
That would cheese me off too!:yep: I have SH3 v1.4b with GWX2 only installed, and have had no problems with reloading to continue patrols. I can't suggest anything further regarding SH3 Commander as I haven't installed it yet, am waiting for the next GWX update before getting right into things because I will have to restart a new carreer anyway!:yep:
Did you enable any mods or alter SH3 including commander, in anyway between loads?:-?

@Blackhand
I found going back to onboard sound (AC97) stopped the crashes, use to have CSBlaster 5n1 sound card, uninstalled/reinstall drivers many times over, i took the card out cause i would get weird static sound. The odd CTD i thought was something else but once card was removed and i went back to crappy onboard AC97 now 2 speakers  never had a crash or stutter since. (GWX 2, Uboat 1.2, OLC mods)
If u got onboard sound try that instead of the sound cards.
Or if your PC hasn't been cleaned out for 2yrs or more - reformat it and start over.

So, I hit the crack pipe again. I told myself I wasn't going to play this game anymore . . . but you know how that goes.
I gave it one last shot and attempted to load the patrol (via SH3 Commander) from the very first save after leaving port. (I always save once I'm far out to see and away from the harbor traffic.)
Waddya know! That one worked. I was able to complete the patrol in one sitting. I did not attempt to load any saves.
I went ahead and began a new patrol. Hopefully I'll be able to load that save when I return from business next week.
The error message didn't indicate a sound problem with the most recent CTD's. I think it has something to do with the graphics being unable to initialize . . . but that's just a guess. All of my drivers are updated, my machine is defragmented, the drive is less than half-full and the registry is clean. Yeah, the PC is a few years old, but it runs fine. Honestly, I have no idea what the problem is & it sounds like nobody else does either. Lotsa good guesses though. Keep em comin!
Till then, I'll just assume GWX is hit & miss (for me) and there's a good possibility that I won't be able to finish the patrol. The next time it crashes I'll just pretend I was attacked and eaten by a sea monster.

Up until yesterday, I would've been in the "no CTDs with 2.0 so far" crowd, but like a bozo, I left the game running and went to help my wife do something...I could kick myself for not pausing the game. :damn: I came back to the onscreen announcement saying my crew was dead and my boat was sunk! I was on my 12th war patrol and feeling pretty good about it. I figured, what the heck, I'll just launch the game and pick up where I should have left off. Now I can get no more than about 7 minutes into it before I CTD. I even reverted back to the next earlier save and it does it there too. It's crashed in as little as 45 seconds on the original save and as long as the 7 minutes on the next earlier save. I was in AN55 cruising on the surface at 8 kts, 21:00 hours, heading 164 degrees in calm seas (winds @ 2 m/sec) toward a small merchant I had smoked with a 6km+ eel shot. The game saves have all been while surfaced. I've tried it both with SH3 Commander and going GWX 2.0 sans Commander, always the CTD but with different times before the CTD occurs. The Event Log shows nothing associated with the crash. I could try going back to successively earlier game saves, but I'm afraid it will be like an inch-by-inch amputation.
There is obviously something not quite right here, I think it must be when certain circumstances come into play, there are many new additions to GWX and only a limited few could beta test it prior to it's release, now the problems start to show & the poor GWX team have a thankless big job ahead!
@ i_b_spectre & TheBlackHand, did you play GWX 1.03 prior to this & did you have any problems?:)
i_b_spectre
01-17-08, 07:43 PM
Yes, I did play GWX 1.03 and I do recall having a CTD on an occasion or two. However, they appeared to be linked to a corrupted save and reverting to a previous save seemed to be the fix. I have since read that game saves while submerged can cause problems, so I've been careful to save while surfaced.
I'm not saying that something in GWX 2.0 is causing this, it's just a piece of the puzzle like map location and what was going on when the CTD occurs.
It wouldn't be the end of the world to keep stepping back one save at a time until, hopefully, I found a point from which things would run normally. A few saves ago on this particular patrol, I had an interesting event that I hoped wouldn't have to be trashed. I was submerged, waiting on an approaching convoy, when a bloody ASW trawler (not associated with the convoy) escorting a coal barge came by close enough to sense me. I was full stop, he wasn't pinging, but maybe he had MAD gear, I don't know. Anyway, he began prosecuting me. I managed to stay away from his DC attacks until he apparently exhausted his supply (too bad the graphics don't show empty racks when this happens). This guy stayed with me until the convoy got closer, then a DD joined in the hunt. I was able to maneuver clear of his attacks while waiting on the juicy targets to get within range. Finally, an Empire something-or-other vessel got within parameters and I timed a dash to periscope depth when the DD was coming around after passing over me. I sent a spread into the target ship and it blew him in half. The forward half of the ship sank pretty quickly, but the aft half stabilized and sat on the surface, burning. Needless to say, the DD and the ASW trawler made me the plan of the day. I positioned my VIIB under the still floating aft section and above the sunken forward section of the Empire and watched the two hunters go 'round and 'round. Eventually, I was able to time my move from under the temporary refuge, went to periscope depth and fired the stern tube, taking out the DD. The trawler stuck around for quite awhile before he finally pulled off and headed toward his original destination. It was a little later, with the aft half of the Empire still burning on the horizon, that I encountered the unescorted small merchant and set it ablaze with the longest aimed shot I've made to date. I got close enough to pump some 88's into him until getting the "She's going down" and red sunken ship icon on the map. I radioed my report to BdU and resumed my original course. It was all going so well right up until I had a brain smelly and failed to pause when I left the computer for a few minutes. Ain't that the way life goes?
Sorry to bore you with the details, but it was a patrol that started out so unremarkably and got so interesting before I made a grave tactical error.:nope:

Hi,
I can't possibly give any advice yet, as I lack experience with GWX installations, however, maybe it is interesting to note that I have a special kind of CTD issue not mentioned here:
When in fullscreen, the game will crash 90% of the times when I alt-tab back to windows. It does not do that when running in windowed mode (but framerate suffers too much for me). However, this happened with Stock SH3 exactly the same, so it does not seem to be an GWX issue.
So it might be possible that the core problem lies within SH3 (though it only occurs on some system configurations) and GWX is merely a side influence.
i_b_spectre

As it turns out, it looks like my CTD problem was related to a corrupted game save. I finally bit the bullet and loaded the next earlier save and the game ran fine. So fine, in fact, the Royal Navy made me the object of their affection for too long. Oh well, at least my GWX is okay even if my VIIB isn't. :dead:
That's great news i_b_spectre!:yep:

I'm playing on a Notebook (T41) with 1400x1050 screen resolution which I dont change -- The game switches to 1024x768 with no problems. When switching back via alt-tab, the resolution is always changed back to 1400x1050, too. Just in 90% of the cases I get a windows dialog (may take 2-3 seconds) that tells me, the application has crashed.
So it's not actually a CTD, it's a crash after I switch to the Desktop. Just thought it might be somehow related. I am running the latest driver for my Radeon Mobility card (which sucks, by the way).

For what it's worth, I am getting the same corrupt save file crash as others have stated above. Perhaps one out of ten times I can load a saved file. Also, I've never been able to task switch out of Silent Hunter III without a crash for the life of my playing the game and my system is well above the required specs.

This has gotten much worse. I was on a rather successful patrol and did several (read: five) saves along the way while transiting to my patrol zone. I exited the game and when I tried to load my saves, I was greeted with a crash just as the "not so long ago" screen came up. I tried approximately 6-8 times per save, working my way back after giving up on each level until the only save I was able to recover was the "in port before patrol" one. It's frustrating enough to make me want to roll back to an earlier GWX just so I can play a game and have confidence in re-loading it later. For what it's worth, this was strictly with SH3 1.4b with GWX 2 overtop and no other mods. I've since applied other mods like OLC GUI and they have seemingly no effect on how a save game is loaded. Help!

Dont ya just luv the way the CTD follows you back in time! Infecting previous saves. Seems incredible really. :nope:
I never found out what caused the CTD's but they have since stopped for me. I did have to reload all the way back to port as you did but when I redid my patrol I was able to complete it.
I took no corrective action. Basically I ignored it and hoped it would go away. I am currently in 1943 of the same career and have not had a CTD for many patrols now. Go figure...
All I can say is hang in there eventually one of the L33t folks here will figure it out. :yep:

I think I've just given up on reloading and perhaps even playing SH3 until this is corrected. I've had a fatal crash which actually made me have to press the reset button on the computer. This is not the first of these either. I fully expect to be unable to reload my saves but will try once for laughs.

I was having many of the same CTD's and mentioned them on another thread (under "Howlin'"). From the little response, I figured it was either just me or an old, resolved issue. The Brotherhood of Crashers in this thread gives me a warm feeling of being in this together and a willingness to keep hanging in there.
I'm now running End-it-all to reduce running apps, then going to task manager (Cont-Alt-Del) and cutting a few more processes (like i-tunes, apple mobile, i-pod, network things, Skype, scheduled tasks etc - all easily identifyable apps. There are others that I could kill, but I don't recognise them by file name, so I leave them.)
I then go to connections and disable internet. Obviously if I ever get good enough to contemplate multiplayer, I won't do that.
All this is over the top of a cleaned & defragged Hard drive (just using System Tools in Accessories - nothing fancy there).
My frequency of crashes does seem to have diminished quite a bit, so for what its worth, this may help someone.
My thinking was that an internet download from some app updater may be kicking the sytem to CTD. I have no proof of this, but it couldn't hurt, right? Anyway, its become part of my routine and gives me the pleasant illusion that I am in control.
Good luck to all the frustrated ones going through the uninstall/reinstall routine (I only did that 4 times, so I empathise).
Thankfully, I've never had an armed trawler crash, but crashing when closing in on the Hood (in 1939 on my first patrol!) and never being able to find the taskforce again remains one of my greatest frustrations!
Good hunting all

PS. Do any of you know why fully trained Watch Officers are never able to see smoke on the horizon - only ships when they come within visual range? (Please point me to the right thread for this sort of question & I won't annoy by taking this one off-subject. Thanks.):hmm:

As for the smoke on the horizon.
Seems, the AI units spot it.
At lest in what I'm testing now.
But Sub crew does not.
I use a test "What if" for this.
There does seem to be a save game, save career issue.
I have not seen it myself.
And I save under the worst conditions on purpose.
I save while being DCed, right under convoys,
you name all the places not to save?
I do it.
Each system seems to react differently.
And I'm a firm believer in DISCONNECT from the Internet 1st!!!
If you have wireless?
Shut down your wireless card!
Reduce as many running numbnnuts apps as possible.
Go 2 gigs of ram.
Get several patrols in a new career BEFORE adding mods.
Even the GWX mods.
Watch time compression.
I don't understand why but...
I'm pretty damned sure somethings are getting screwed up by it.
Oh, and a new Armed Trawler Fix is being tested.

I used to have many CTD's as well and I seemed to have fixed it doing this:
"Started browsing CTD threads again and someone suggested changing settings in the audio console, I changed the digital output from 48Hz to 96Hz. (Audigy 2 Platinum)I guess it's possible I once changed those audio settings which were than returned to default when I did a clean OS install."
For me the above fix solved my CTD problem.
This is from another forum, if you would like to read the entire thread:

I am having problems again today but this has something to do with overclocking I think, should have never started to do that. Even though I clocked everything back to factory settings I now have frequent game crashes, not only GXW 2 but also other games. I hope I didn't fry anything.

I've done another complete wipe and re-install and this seems to have solved my problems. I've loaded three different save games now three times each and haven't had a single crash. Wooo!

Well, I'm at the tail end of my most successful patrol to date. (Mind you, with all of the CTD's, this is only my fourth patrol.) I've put a good three to four hours into this one. I'm about to leave the Irish Sea with four fish left. Hoping to catch some merchant shipping on my way out. I just sunk a tug with the deck gun.
I save the game so I can go to dinner.
I come back, looking forward to wrapping things up and . . .
:damn: :damn: :damn: :damn: :damn:
I cannot effing believe this sh*t.
The game gets to the "Long Time" screen. I see the dials just begin to come up . . . but the depth guage is whited out. Not a good sign. Sure enough . . . fade to black. Cue the error card.
I go yutz.
Calm down. Reload. This time the SAME save game gets past the "Long" screen . . . the dials are coming in clear . . . I can see game dialouge . . . the cursor is there . . . maybe, just maybe this'll work . . . but NO.
Crash to desktop.
I have tried practically ALL of the suggestions within this thread. I have gone through a couple of full uinstall/reinstall processes. I refuse to do that again. I have decided that if I can't load this game from the point just prior to killing the tug I will completely walk away.
Cold turkey.

I remember I had horrible CTD problem with SH3, later learned something. After clean install of SH3, then install lastest patch, when in stock or GWX, start a new career, do NOT upgrade anything, even flak gun or KGB for first patrol. Change torpedo types or adding new officers are ok. After done with first patrol, dock at home port, then it should be ok to upgrade whatever for U-boat. Also saving game while under water may be also result of CTD problems or corrupted files. I remember I CTD every time I damaged or destroyed a Clemson Destroyer leading convoy from Canada in 1942, so I had to leave that destroyer alone from now on. If problem with CTD still continues, try a new career at different flotilla for awhile, then change back to your prefer flotilla with new career to try again. I also believe using no cd crack from gamecopyworld helps so I don't have any starforce screwing up my window.

I've had a similar problem.
GWX 2.0 with SH3cmdr.
I saved game while raiding Hartlepool with 2 armed trawlers around. Couldn't reload, apparently file is corrupted. First time I see this. I reload my previous save with no problem until I CTD twice when trying to escape.
I figure the armed trawler patch should help, but not sure how to install it.
Thx for help

I've had similar reload CTD issues. I have been able to revert to an earlier save from the same patrol and go from there. Frustrating, yes (especially consdering that the ****ing game takes 20 minutes to load!). But workable.
i usually experience CTD when there are more than 5 ships switch on their search light... but it seems if i dont actually see the light there will not be CTD. don't know if anyone experience this before? (SH3+GWX2.0)

Welcome aboard Seedoo!! :arrgh!:
Yes the CTD problem in SH3 is quite horrific and no one knows why it happens. It seems like just about anything will cause one. I feel we are just playing an unstable game praying it doesnt crash every second of every frame.
My favorite is when I crash, reload a previous game and that crashes. I have had the CTD follow me back in time all the way to port through 6 seperate saves. Mind you I always save under different conditions. But when a save in the middle of the atlantic, on the surface, in calm seas, with no ships in site...crashes, you have to wonder. :hmm:
Having said that I still play and enjoy the game immensly.
Just remember when you have just sunk that 50k tonner and you are in the middle of the juicy-est unescorted convoy of large tankers you have ever seen.....CTD!

Yep, had my fair share of problems, most of which I solved.
But, CTD's still sometimes occur. It's been a while that I couldn't load a savegame (knock on wood) but I'm always mentally prepared for it ;)
Can't remember how many careers I deleted and created. I have never done one from '39 to '45, and not because my career was cut short due to death. (after playing this game on and off for 2 years).
Still, beautiful game, or rather, GWX is a brilliant mod! Most games I really enjoyed were always flawed with bugs, you learn to love and hate them and depend on the modding community to ease your pain

I'm sorry to read of your numerous experiences with intermittent CTD issues.
Usually a CTD is a direct result of a system fault or a faulty game installation (loading on top of a non fresh install or a conflict between 3rd party mods).
I can categorically assure you that GWX2.0 is stable, provided the installation instructions (available from the GWX website) are strictly adhered to.
The mod was tested for literally thousands of hours to ensure said stability, prior to release.
The same attention to detail is currently being undertaken with the next, final release.....GWX2.1 http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/9708/piratebf4.gif (http://imageshack.us)

Like many other Kaleuns here, I have also several CTD(crashes), very frustrating situations specially after hours of hunt a convoy or with a excelent score in the actual patrol.I have noted, some generalities in this crashes:
-U-Boot submerged with two or more destroyers(or escorts)chasing you
-Inside of a enemy harbour, submerged, after hit some targets
I suspect sometimes the crashes come after save a situation in the middle of a eventment(a torpedo underway, DC underway, a ship sinking, but sot sure; sometimes I have CTD only changing the crew posts in the fatigue routine..., select a crew member and... black screen and bla...bla...bla
For this reason I have also always two save: one of the present Patrol(the definitive one)only done at surface, without any action underway, and a second in the middle of the actual situation. If I have a crash , maybe I lost all work done the last minutes(or hours:cry: ), but not the whole patrol. To avoid confussion , the save is named with a slight difference(for example: "Prien" the definitive one,"Priens" the risky save). After crash , I try to reload first "Priens",if this one crash, I have the backup of "Prien" ; boring and frustrating, but better than nothing and can help to recover.

I use similar tactics which usually save the day. My saves are usually called: travel 1 and travel 2, contact 1 and contact 2 and convoy 1 and 2. Number 2 always meaning a "hot" save after a situation has developed. Number 1 is always on the surface and no contacts in the vicinity.
@Jimbuna, I think you are right and these crashes are probably caused by my "unique hardware setup". Conflicts in hardware, drivers and processes running in the background. (yep, I know you kan kill most of them). Funny thing is not all demanding games cause crashes, even after hours of play. But, some demanding games do. I have always suspected my soundcard when it comes to SH3/GWX. (Soundblaster Audigy 2 Platinum - CTD's with different driver versions) Many a time I had the impression the game crashed at the precise moment a certain sound was 'rendered'. But I have no spare card to test this and maybe it's an illusion.
BTW. I always install clean versions of the game when a major update is released.
I used process killing software, RAM defragmentation tools, shut down anti-virus programs and so on. The specs on my current system are more than adequate for SH3 / GWX2.0:
Pentium 3 Ghz
800 Mhz FSB
2 GB RAM (dual channel)
SATA HD
Nvidia 7800 GS - 256
Anyway, I'm planning to build a new system in 2009 with all the latest so maybe than...

Ok.
So, if CTDs are a hardware setup issues and so many folks are having this problem then it cant be very "unique", it must be something we all have and or are doing. Unless SH3 is just that weak in the knees that any combo of issues will affect it.
NOT CLEAN INSTALL?!! :o Next time why dont you smack me in the face with a gauntlet. I refuse to even answer a comment like that! :damn: OMG someone take the dagger out of my back. LOL
I have installed this game on 2 seperate Computers. One is a laptop, one a desktop. My desktop is strictly for gaming, there are no programs on it other than games. There is nothing running to cause conflicts or use resources. So there is nothing to turn off when I do an install or play my games. My laptop on the other hand is my working PC and has all the usual crap running BUT I still get CTDS on both sometimes at the same instances.
I'm no PC expert nor do I claim to be one. But...
If it is a hardware issue,,, Howcome then...?
1) I can play for days and never have a problem?
2) CTDs follow me back through time as I reload earlier saves?
Oh yah and whats a "system fault"?? Can I get an example. PLz.
Anyways I'm glad this thread is still alive and well because this issue is far from dead. :arrgh!:

Hello fellow kaleuns. So sorry to resurrect this thread but after a 9 month hiatus caused by CTDs I have had the urge to play GWX again, and what do I find? GWX 1.03 is now 2.1 :)
But unfortunately I have run into problems right away. It seems no matter what I do I cannot play a single mission. When the loading bar is nearly completed BUT before the quote "A long time ago" I get the dreaded Sh3.exe error message. This is playing with mods that only affect .tga and sound. Also I have tried without any mods at all. No luck. :nope:
So I'm guessing veteran kaleuns are going to tell me to uninstall/reinstall right? Funny thing is single missions were working yesterday. Go figure! :hmm:
I'm not gonna start a new career until this problem is sorted. Anyway nice to be back. :arrgh!:

Problem seemed to resolve itself when I applied the 2.1 update. I also installed a beefier PSU and my 'puter hasn't missed a beat since.
Played the Gibraltar mission with several mods installed (no CTDs). I finished it too. Nervewracking though. :yep:
