Uninstalled the game and removed all existing files to get ready for GWX2. Trying to install a patch when this message shows up:
This program cannot update the installed version of Silent Hunter III EMEA DVD v1.0,v1.1 and v1.2 because of the following reason:
C:\Program\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\Menu\de_menu.tx t: unknown version
Never happened before.
Any ideas?
Cheers.
When you say you removed all existing files, that included all the files left behind by the uninstaller in C:\Program\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\ correct? You can safely delete the file and try the patch again. There are 4 .txt files that are left behind when using the uninstaller that need to be deleted for the patches to work.

If you run your stock game and it says 1.4 in bottom right corner you don't need to patch. According to a post on UBI, 1.4 and 1.4b are one and the same.
Otherwise go into SH3 file and delete de_menu mentioned in the error as the patch will create a replacement.

No, when I did this (delete the file), it complained about the file not existing, and thus it won't install the patch....

Hmm, ddid you try running your DVD to see what version it is?

Okay, I fixed it. I reinstalled SHIII (again), and it would appear that I downloaded the wrong patch. I downloaded the european version while I needed the one for American DVDs. (I'm european, but my father bought me the game when he was in the states, took a while for me to remember that though).
Now I need to install GWX2 though....I've encountered problems with that....haven't got time to tell about it now though. I shall return...tomorrow.
Thanks for the help lads.

Okay, new problem!
SHIII is patched up, and ready to go, now I need to install GWX2. So I download all files, do just as I'm supposed to do (put them in a folder named "GWX 2.0") and start the installation. So when it's supposed to start, I fet this message:
Please insert disk 1 and click OK.
If the files on the disk can be found in a folder other than the one displayed below, enter the correct path or click browse
any ideas.....?

I recently installed GWX 2.0, and I THINK I got the same result as you at first. My problem turned out to be that one of the downloads was corrupted.
You have put all the new .bin files and the GWX.exe file (paw-icon) into the same folder, yes?
And you then browsed to that folder and clicked on the .exe, yes?
Apologies if you are an old hand at this and don't need such low level help - but as no-one else has responded to your post yet, didn't want you to think no-one had anything to say.
When I got that message , I can't remember what I did to resolve it, but putting all the files in one folder and then browsing to it IS the right thing to do, so that is that.
If you get past that and then get the message that the first file it tries to load is corrupted, you need to download a checksum utility - the Jones one is recommended. Try here for that

md5mate is its name. You also need the numbers of each file so that the utility can compare them with the text. See below
Copy the following text into notepad and save it as GWX2.md5 in the same folder you have the exe/bin files
D1FF0D6BFD651E869E323D393B1D5B1E *GWX2.EXE
7B14767E3FD8DD9866D902D6CB4B69FE *GWX2-1.BIN
2718CAD3259B5A43DF03AA88DEAB402B *GWX2-2.BIN
AB9AF05BD89263A018F383EDA589DE90 *GWX2-3.BIN
0FFDB16F197E159E61651DB5D805529A *GWX2-4.BIN
753D95679C46DF2C54AF7E93B0CCB6EB *GWX2-5.BIN
AB5D09575688802B08156CE1C24C6C88 *GWX2-6.BIN
5BF3E05A81D0E4E09F331090FD3C4C7B *GWX2-7.BIN
Open MD5 mate and select and paste in the first file into the box, in the second box paste the matching number from the text file you've just created, after a while the program tells you if the files are correct. Go through each one in that way.
I found I had to do each of the files singly. If I did them as a batch it returned a failed match for all.
Download the corrupt one again, and then go through the GWX setup again, and all should be well.
Hope there is some usefulness here, and that someone more able will help you out if not :)
ahh, I seem to recall that Penelope has done a guide - that might help you.. can't recall what the thread is called but should be easy enough to find - only a few days ago...nff, looked, but can't find it... sorry :(
