Hi,

when being on the bridge, I see black artifacts in the sky, like flashes, as the boat is rolling in the sea.

This is on a 8800GTS with 620 MB RAM (163.75)

Any suggestions how to get rid of it?

TIA

Z.

I see this too. Do they resemble a triangular shape?

This is on a Radeon 9000 128 mb.

Is it early July, in 1947 and are they heading toward New Mexico ? :rotfl:

I cant speak for Zakalwe, but with me, it looks like an entire portion of the sky is missing from the horizon up.

So to awnser your question, no.

I used to think that it was the computer rendering the ships, or aircraft, at ~30km away. But after following one, it just turned out to be nothing. The Greys must have initiated their cloaking device.

Lets hope this "Cloaking Device" as it's called doesn't fall into Allied hands...at least until we finish building our super secret undreground drilling machine ,that Adolph Hitler will drive himself under the Earth's crust directly into the Untited States ! Boy will the US be surprised once "Operation Subway" gets underway !!!
Then of course.. we'll have to deal with their pesky American superheroes but hey.. one thing at a time !

I have just started getting this as well. New computer with 8800GT, fresh install of SH3 and GWX2. Using 16km, 3d waves. Noticeable flashed black boxes when the weather is good :sunny:, but not when it rains...

On my old PC with 9800XT and GWX1.3 at 8km I did not see this. Need to experiment more as I'm new (again) to Nvidia.

Sounds similiar to the "forgot to roll back SHCommander and activate the GWX16k atmos mod" problem

:yep:

But ya not to specific on what mods ya running

Hi,

I have this little problem too.

This is a problem with the 8800 series and the drivers. I can't get rid of it. I learned to live with

In my older rig, with ATI card, no such problems.

Thanks Badger but this was a fresh install of everything on a new PC so it was the first time running the 16k mod. Have since rolled back and re-run anyway for another mod (antennas lowered) and the problem persists.

Just as for Marko_Ramius, my old ATI rig never had the problem. To my mind it's either the new 8800GT, its drivers or possibly the 16km mod. As not everyone using the 16km mod has the problem I'm thinking it's either the card or more likely its drivers. Or perhaps the way I've got it set up as it's a bit different to the Catalyst Control Center I'm used to ;).

I too could live with it if need be as otherwise the card is very, very good!

As for GWX 2.0 I had my first contacts last night. Chased down two merchants off Portugal only to find they had their Christmas lights on - Irish neutrals!

I used to have this when playing on my laptop, it was a problem with the radeon 9200 series (and now i guess the 8800s too), where polys would dissapear from the sky dome leaving a black triangle.

Try DLing the shIV scene.dat mod as it fixed the problem for me (its in the forum somewhere)

Just upgraded my vid card to 8800GT and I start getting the artifacts too. It's related to the 16km mod for GWX 2.0, as in stock (8km) GWX2.0 I don't have them.

By replacing files individually, I traced the problem to one of the files in the Env folder, more precisely the Sky.... (something) file - can't remember the precise name, I'm @work now. With the 8 Km (stock GWX2.0) file there's no problem, as soon as I put the 16 Km file the artefacts appear.

If this observation can help anyone in fixing it, here it is: After vid card upgrade, I have the artifacts also in my GWX 1.03 install. I didn't have them until the upgrade (Nvidia 7900GS), so the changes in this file (the Sky... thing) are not 100% to the taste of newer video cards.

I am having this problem WITHOUT the 16k mod. Little flashes or flickering black objects when looking at the horizon. Does not seem to happen when it is raining.

Also get black flickering marks on the surface of the moon. It only happens intermittantly. Sometimes the moon appears perfectly normal.

I am playing on a laptop. Radeon X1400

IMO it must have been something with the nvidia cards, on my old system with a 9700pro I didn`t get this artifacts with the 16 km mod. Havent`t tested GWX 2 without it, so I can`t tell if it has something to do with the 16 km mod.

But at least I`m somewhat "glad" being not the only one... :damn:

btw. I`m seeing bright dots on the horizon at night, something I haven`t encountered with the Ati card too.

I looked in the readme for SH3 (the stock readme that is), and it does mention the artifact on the horizon. Its just a graphics bug on a few different cards.

Its a stock issue, not GWX or 16km.

Yep. I was afraid of that.

The 8000 series Nvidia cards appear to not play well with SH3. The trend was emerging with user complaints that related to GWX... but we had altered/modded nothing with the environmental effects that would cause graphic anomalies (black triangles) as described in a number of places.

Though it answers a question that repeatedly comes up... it is sad to see it happen for so many users.

That's strange. I'm on an 8600 GTS 256 MB and I've not had that problem for some reason...

Aw well. Vanilla SH3 was made in 2005. A pity that so much came out in 2006 that changed gaming. It doesn't support dual cores nor does it like some of the more advanced cards.

Hey!
I play on a 8500GT, and I got the black-alien-flickering stuff when I tried the 16km mod, after I disabled, the aliens left....
So perhaps something with the 16km mod doesn't work well with newer nvidia drivers!?
Hope someone finds a solution, 'cause I would like to turn on the 16km mod again....

Yeah, I read that one earlier...
But since I haven't noticed the artifacts neither in stock sh3 or with GWX2 without the 16km mod using my 8500GT, then I had no better idea than to blame the 16km mod.... I know I shouldn't blame anything without looking further into it.... ...but I only get the trouble with the 16km mod. So if the 8*** series is the problem, then I hope someone finds a way around that, if perhaps older drivers work better, "16km for 8series only" or whatever!

 Sry Lehmann, not really sure what i'm trying to say...but... I'm just having a hard time accepting this: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=725217&postcount=20 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=725217&postcount=20[/quote) and hoping there is a solution to it!

"On ATI Radeon 8500,9000,9200 there are graphic artefacts consisting in missing triangles
from the game sky."
Found this in SH3 readme, so it's probably the same with some Nvidia cards.... To bad, then there might not be any solution, I should probably just be happy that it only appears with the 16km mod.....
So it's not a Gwx bug....

I get flashing black triangles on the horizon using an ATI Radeon x1950 Pro videocard with the 16km mod activated, so it's not an NVIDIA only issue. Shifting back to 8 km sorts out the flashes on the horizon, but I get those flashes (albeit smaller) on the skydome, above the bridge. This seems to me a stock issue, since the same thing happens whether or not I enable GWX (1.3 or 2.0).

Also, in my case, Reece's SH4 scene mod gets rid of this annoyance.

But can it be used with 16km mod? Is it based on GWX2 so that it doesn't change anything from this great mod?

No, it's an 8km mod (actually 9 km, like in SH4). Apparently, the SH4 scene.dat cannot be ported to SH3 in a 16km setting.
It writes over GWX if enabled, but it works nonetheless.

Anyone who is having this graphics problem and is willing to try a test, I have a 16km mod that uses different envcolors and skycolors files.

Use JSGME to enable it after the GWX 16KM mod and let us know if it fixes your problem. I used it to fix a graphic problem I was having with my Nvidea 7800GS. Be aware that this mod will also lighten up your night sky.

It's about a 1000KB zip file and JSGME ready, if interested let me know and I can either e-mail it to you or put it on filefront.

It seems that the problematic video cards are more widely used now as opposed to our last GWX release. I'm sure there are a quite a few users that would be glad to try it out.

:hmm:

It sychronizes the framerate output of the game to your monitor. (Best I can describe it.) Doing so greatly reduces graphic tearing and other anomalies. Infact this option works better with some LCD monitors than not having it enabled.

Heck, I've gotten to where I can hardly stand it WITHOUT this video option enable in-game. I think lots of people have simply gotten used to the graphic tearing in SH3 because they aren't sure what this option does.

Synchronizing will usually lower the framerate... but will stabilize it. For instance... on my system, I get all kinds of FPS, up into the hundreds if I leave it un-selected... but it is typically STABLE at 75-76 FPS in most occasions in-game with this feature enabled.

I think too that many stay away from this option because all they see is that it "lowers FPS" in various descriptions and don't realize the quality improvement they get in return.

ANYTHING above 23 FPS is GOOD... as it is faster than the human eye can register. Below 23 FPS... it starts to get choppy where you notice that your system is struggling.

I have to second the good Kpt. as far as synchronisation goes. As I undertsand it there is very little to be lost by checking this option and everything to be gained.

When I first installed GWX 2.0 I was all set to post a "Great work guys, but am having a few display problems..." thread.

I was getting all kinds of tearing, and black flashes on the horizon etc... until I noticed that my PC was churning out 270fps and I had obviously forgotten to check the synchronisation option when I reinstalled. I rechecked that option and everything is bulletproof once again (well the graphics are, I'm still trying to figure out the reason for my CTD's but I'm pretty sure that's my end and not a GWX problem).

Atthe end of the day if your monitor is only refreshing at 70Hz you gain no benefit in asking your gfx card to pump out 270fps.

About black Artefacts in sky and mod spoken by Samwolf, i said in another post :

" I'm trying the mod you spoke above, Samwolf. And for the moment, this is so far so good, for the brighter nights !! Thanks.

I don't see real things different with these files except the brighter night, so it's great.

Unfortunately, this doesn't cure the black artifacts seen in sky for the 8800 cards. I still have them. This thing is really a mistery. "

It seems there is no such artefacts in looking in periscope, or UZO :hmm:. Strange !

Reporting back:

Samwolf (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/member.php?u=223683)'s solution did not work in my case. (Although I certainly appreciate the attempt.)

The black triangles are about 2-3 times larger in size with the 16k mod (in my case.)

I am going to stick with the 8k version and just put up with it. My initial sense is that the video synchronization does reduce the flickering somewhat - and it doesn't perceptibly slow my system.

One thing someone mentioned that puzzles me -- why should this flaw in the skyline occur with the "naked eye" and not when using any of the ocular enhancements?
Anyone?

I think I got the solution.
By opening scene.dat with the MiniTweaker, the last value is Horizon = 2000. I increased it to 3000 and this got rid of the artifacts, at least in my case.

I really don't know how to post screenshots here. I can send one on your e-mail address, if provided. I can also send you the scene.dat.txt file I used for the minitweaker.

Meanwhile, check this thread, post no. 29 by Reece. This explains that the Horizon variable sets the distance at which the game renders the horizon. With Horizon = 3000, the horizon line puts the black artefacts at 24 kms in theory, but too far for the game to render them actually, so this is why we cannot see them any more.

using the stock 8k I adjusted from 1000 to 2000 and they were gone,

Try adjusting from 2000 up in smaller scales.

I'd say that's a close start!
16k mod hammers my system but I got no black thingys.
using the stock 8k I adjusted from 1000 to 2000 and they were gone,
but there were side effects.
Try adjusting from 2000 up in smaller scales.
Say from 2000 to 2100 and so forth.

Yes, I'm using the 16 km mod and this solved the problem without giving me any side-effect even with Horizon = 3000. But I have a pretty strong system, able to cope even with the skydome at 24 kms:oops: (no bragging here, just a fact).

I do not find a variable Horizon in the scene.dat.txt. So i seem to have a different version. Can somebody PM me the correct tweak-file?

Privateer, thanks. I updated the scene.dat and made it 'JSGME ready'. The other method using Marhks Ocean Madness mod did work as well but doesnot touch the scene.dat at all. So we then have two different solutions for the artifacts issue.

Hi Rik007,

When you say that you 'updated' the scene.dat file... what exact changes did you make to it? I have been following the 'black triangles' issue as well.

There is a spot that says start download.
Click that and the download starts.
It's the file used by MiniTweaker to adjust the scene.dat.
You adjust the Horizon Zmax setting up.
For 8k users, it starts at 1000
For 16k users, it starts at 2000

I'd bump the settings up a little at a time rather than 1 huge jump.

Hi Kpt. Lehmann,

exactly as Privateer describes in post #65:

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y77/rik007/mt.jpg

I also tried ZMax = 2100 which also chased the black artifacts away.

Merry Christmas to all!!

Thanks Rik007. I was wondering if a setting of 2100 would work.

What puzzles me, is how this issue escaped EVERYONE's notice for the last two years. (Since the 16km visibility mod was created.)

I also have this artifact and would like to get rid of it.

I tried a number of places to find this program SH3 Mini Tweaker, but all I get is broken links.

Does anyone have a valid link or a copy of the program and tweak files which they can email me? (PM me please)

Thanks.

Great, the horizon Zmax change to 2100 and shift-Page up and down has finaly solved my problems with the black and white artifacts issue:D . Now back to patrol:up: . GWX2 here I come.

Okay, I find a copy of the tweaker program.

What does SHIFT PGUP do?

Thanks.

If you are using Gforce 8800 you will have white specks on the horizon. By hitting shift-Page up you can get rid of the specks on the horizon. However, the AA will be inactive but you can activate it by shift-Page down. During night I deactivat AA and I reactivate it during daytime.

Hi,

I re-install 16 km mod (despite all black artifacts) because it's just a little strange playing without it and I download over it "wildchilds tweek mod" (see http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=127378) and... don't ask me why and how... I absolutely don't know but with my GeForce 8800 GT I have many fewer artifacts... so, I'm again happy.
Perhaps, it would work for you too...

I am also having the artifacts problem. I have downloaded the mini-tweaker and the scene_dat.text file, but I'm not sure where to put this file.

Where do I place the scene_dat.text file?

BTW, I get black flashing triangles on the sun and moon with both the 8k mod but not the 16k. the 16k gives me flashing land textures when viewed from a high altitude. I am running GWZ 2.0 with a 8800gt.

Thanks for the help.

Hi Orwell64, and welcome.

If i remember correctly, you should place the .txt file in a folder called : "Tweakfiles"

For exemple, mine is : "F:\Utils\SH3 Mini Tweaker\Tweakfiles\

Be sure to rollback SH3Commander (if you use it) before tweaking.

Here's the link to the mod Im using:

http://files.filefront.com/Marhks+Ocean+MADNESS+v2+1mzip/;9289705;/fileinfo.html

So you said this will fix the black triangles in the sky AND lighten up the night...that would be a double bonus to me as I have Black triangles and a frustratingly dark LCD monitor and would LOVE To lighten the night a tad.

It seems like most of the complaints are coming from Kaleuns with GeForce 8800 chips, yet I have yet to have any artifacts, tearing, or any other graphics problem. Am I just the lucky one, or is my time coming?:hmm:

eVGA GeForce 8800GTS PCI-E 320MB 320-bit GDDR3

Hi KS.

Its hard to say. The majority of the black triangle anomaly reports appear to come from Nvidia 8000 series users... but even so... I'm pretty sure we've fixed the issue in the upcoming GWX 2.1 update release. Basically, it is a residual stock SH3 issue that seems to have reappeared for certain card users... you can see mention/evidence of it in the stock SH3 readme file.

One setting I forgot to click on when I did my fresh SH3 install for GWX 2.0 is the Synch setting..... So I bet that solves a lot of my tearing issues.

Kpt. Lehmann..... GOOD NEWS! S! and thanks. You guys keep fixing issues that, without your intervention, would kill SH3 for newer technology computers. Guess once you guys release the "final" GWX I will need to keep a 2nd old tech computer that runs SH3/GWX well for a few years as technology advances and SH3 dont seem to play well.

Using Mahrks ocean madness file and adjusting the horizon setting with the mini tweaker seems to have resolved the artifacts issues. I also like the lighter night sky which makes it possible to play night mission during real life day time. I am really enjoying GWZ 2.0. It's excellent and has made silent hunter 3 an exceptional sim. I have had SH4 for quite awhile now, but have not gotten too it because I am only beginning to scratch the surface of this one.

Thanks again all for the help.
