View Full Version : fuel leak
I dont expect another patch but heres something that needs fixing: I sustained some battle damage and had to surface, got the report that we were out of fuel. Never got a report of any kind about a fuel leak, and nothing on the damage screen. A fuel leak is something the engineer would usually discover, I think, and report to the captain, Not having this information puts us at a distinct disadvantage. Joe S

All rise! Salute! Admiral Lockwood entering the room. Admiral, this is Commander Joe S with a whine......I mean request for you sir. Could you read the following and help () the man out?

A fuel leak is something the engineer would usually discover, I think, and report to the captain, Not having this information puts us at a distinct disadvantage.:nope: At ease, commander. You say you ARE the captain of your ship? It's the engineer's fault? You have a lousy submarine?:stare: Son, you have the best ordinance issued to any navy in the civilized or uncivilized world. You understand that? YOU are responsible for the well-being of your boat, not your engineer or your second officer or your mommy.
OK, right beside the hydrogen gas percentage gauge, the food gauge, the underwear gauge, the conning tower rust gauge and the hull damage percentage gauge, we'll put yer fuel leak idiot light, yanked from the dashboard of a '37 DeSoto. What do you think idiot lights are for??? IDIOTS! That's who. Submarines are captained by highly trained men who take responsibility for their boat and their crew. When the situation goes south they do not blame their boat. They do not blame their crew. And do you think they might check their fuel levels a couple times a day?:sunny:
The game ain't supposed to hold your hand and give you warm milk and cookies, Commander, and neither will I. Screw the pooch one more time like that, put 70 officer's and men's lives in danger because your mommy didn't tell you you had a fuel leak or you don't have enough underwear for your crew, or you ran out of food and the torpedomen didn't tell you and you'll be skipper of that garbage scow outside the window. And I assure you, this base won't run out of garbage, because I'M IN CHARGE HERE. Dismissed!:nope:
How'd it go Commander Joe? Did he give you a medal for your suggestion's help with the war effort? The admiral was in a real good mood earlier this morning, I sure hope he appreciated your suggestions.... I wish you wouldn't puke in the waste cans...
Thanks Rockin Robbins, that really helps a lot. Joe S

You just caught the admiral on a bad day. He's like that a lot since he ran out of Preparation H. But he IS the admiral and we all have to tow the line. And he DID get those lousy torpedoes fixed and gave us the green light to shut off those @#$@#% magnetic exploders.
And even worse news: that vomit in the waste can is going to stink up my garbage scow. If he relieves you of command, I'm out of a job.

Just because Admiral Lockwood has his panties in a wad doesn't mean nobody can help Joe! I won't tell the Admiral, honest!

RR aside, yes one would hope that the engineer would advise of a fuel leak. Not only that, but the large oil slick forming miles behind your boat, aircraft following it in, as well as, warships would be a sure indication that there is a fuel leak. Not to mention the smell would be unmistakable. At any rate, the devs did not address this issue. Furthermore, there are saddle tanks where one could be leaking and the other unaffected. They also used the tank that was filled with water that helped with trim and also helped in quicker dive times. These are not modelled as well. This brings us to the issue of fuel consumption and not having enough within the game to travel at 15 kts like the real submarines did. Just an ugly snowball effect going on here. At any rate, I do not believe there is a work around for this. The best fix right now is prevention of getting holed.

I feel certain that the fuel leak AI is in place because mileage and fuel consumption on one patrol from Pearl to Japan and back confirmed that the rate of usage for the same 8 kts speed was far less upon returning with a hull damage of 8. So I suspect that the engineer was unaware that we were leaking, and we were lucky not to be sunk by aircraft near Japanese waters. However, stranded 1000 nm from base:cry: when we should have had plenty of fuel by the measurements for the trip out really was deflating to the captain's ego. Started over, of course.
On a subseqent patrol into a Jap harbor with a hull damage of 8, I kept getting airplanes dropping aerial charges near me even though I was 150 ft deep. Then later with hull damage 58 due to stupidity of trying to evade on the surface two merchants several miles away, who had the uncanny ability to score 2 hull hits out of 5 shots before we dived again, I learned that the Gato sub 300 ft operating depth was compromised to 260 ft, when we went to Davy Jones locker :dead: and got a Purple Heart.
So I've started a new career with new mods (additional to TM1.7) and a better idea of why it is best to avoid any hull damage whatsoever.:88)

RR aside, ...Who, me? I'm hiding securely behind the admiral on this one! I'm only the skipper of the garbage scow, but at least I have my own command. You'll have to excuse some weasely conduct now and again.
If Joe gets fired I'm out of a job! You think I WANT that? I should be able to sink Japs with just the SMELL of this thing.
Joe S....You might consider saving the game just before you engage a target. Especially if it's a protected convoy. Just a suggestion is all.

And a fine idea as well! It would kill me to lose my career to an undetected fuel leak. As a bonus, you could use the setup as a training ground. Save it under a different name than you are using for the career for repeated use.
Load it up, try a strategy (several times) and compare it against other courses of action. Especially with the new patch, things have changed and I expect our tactics will need to change too. With the exact setup for each attack your behavior makes the difference in outcome.
And if you get the hated fuel leak killing your chances of getting to port you can load it up, save under the campaign name and have another go. I won't say a word!
