View Full Version : Man, if GWX 2.0 is any tougher...

I've been playing GWX 1.03 since September and I'm up to December of '42 with much yet to learn. I'm seeing more far-ranging aircraft forcing me to dive regularly and convoy escorts seem to make a bee-line toward me from the edge of visibility (16km option) even at night. If 2.0 is any tougher, looks like anything after mid-1942 is likely to be a wash for me. As it is, I spend most of my time in a defensive posture, running silent and trying to evade springing leaks. Finding a lone straggler is my biggest hope. There appears to be a rapidly diminishing chance of even getting within torpedo range of the merchants. I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, I know, but am I looking at a quantum increase in difficulty with 2.0 over what I'm already having with 1.03?

I run GWX 1.03 and I'll admit that it was scarry hard with what seemed like psychic enemy destroyers, but after a while, I learned what was going on and how to avoid them. Unless they're on top of me being big bullies and not letting me get away...
I pretty much have no problem sneaking up on ships now. You just have to take it slow and be quiet (And keep that defensive posture). The only time now that ships make a B-Line toward me is if I fire off steam torpedoes and they follow the bubble trails to me. If I use electrics and get under the convoys and run silent, I can usually get away now.
If all else fails... paint your sub white and put big red crosses on it and claim that you're a hospital sub !

Yes 1.03 is hard sometimes but for me i almost havent met any aircrafts.I managed to evade destroyers easy.Strangely but the destroyers manage to get me always in late 1942 in what seems to be nothing out of the ordinary dc attack. With diference that i cant get out of this damn asdic.

Up until the latter part of 1942 I wasn't have any insurmountable problems. I have been able to stealthily position myself in front of an oncoming convoy, letting the escorts go by and causing mayhem in the middle of the convoy while the escorts ran around trying to find the source. When my torpedo supply was expended, I'd been able to go silent and deep, creeping away until all was clear. I try to use electric torps when I have the luxury of range and time, I stay at 2kts or even go full stop to minimize detection as well as keeping the periscope up for only as long as it takes to make firing solutions. In short, I've picked up a lot of tips from reading these forums. It just seems to have gotten markedly worse very quickly and I'm not even into '43 yet. I don't mind a challenge, but I'm beginning to think it's a real "mission impossible".

After late '42 I make all my torp calculations in the day.
That means that went you attack at night, if you got your geomotry right, you only
need to raise the peri once and fire.
If the weather is calm and I get really good calculations on the convoy in the day, then
I try a attack at 4k range (steam torps).

If i undestand you right you have to keep uboot position the same relative to the convoy untill night comes, how you will achieve that ?

By using the charts and the watch officer.
Plott the coarse and time the zig zag
set torp comp from previuos calcs
flank up and begin the attack run

lo spectre
i think your troubles are pretty much historicly correct mate....
at the latter end of the war....the allies asidic techniques and technologies were improving all the time as was the allied air coverage from land based and carrier fleets until they had almost total air cover of the atlantic by the end of the war....were all fighting a losing battle mate!!!

I had been using the same technique and faced the same problems with being detected. I've just upgraded to GWX 2.0 and find that you need to stay deep (near to crush depth) and position in front and to one side (3 km works best) of a convoy. Once the lead escort gets level with you, you can go to periscope depth slow ahead and pick off the last 2 or 3 rows of ships before going under the convoy to safety.

Yeah, its working good if you have that constant feeling of "impending doom", aside from the "Happy Days", the rest was relentless misery. This sim is so much fun!
