I have a UPS [uninterruptible power supply] hooked up to every computer and network component in my house, which is quite a few. This afternoon I was sailing outbound from Wilhelmshaven, off the coast of Norway, when a circuit breaker for the upstairs power cut off the electricity. I was able to keep going as my computer continued to run on battery backup. I have a somewhat demanding system, with a higher wattage power supply, twin optical drives, RAID0 disk array, etc. Still, my battery backup, more than three years old by the way, still pumps out enough juice for 20 minutes of runtime. That gave me time to save and exit and properly shut down. I think a UPS is a must-have, really, especially if you are hardcore gamer; there's nothing worse than losing a pile of tonnage because the power suddenly cuts and you haven't saved your game.
