View Full Version : PLEASE do NOT start a pissing contest, but

I have always played NYGM. That's not because of any prejudice, it's just that it was the first I d/l and I had d/l capacity constraints.
I'm probably going to give GWX2.0 a go.
If someone has tried NYGM 2.6 and GWX 2.0 I'd love to hear what they feel the differences are.
Note: if you have NOT tried BOTH then please do NOT post - I only want comments from people who have tried both and are in a position to say 'here are some obvious differences'.
I certainly am NOT looking for any comment on which is 'better'. My own view is that NYGM is terrific, and plenty of people view GWX as terrific too (as I said, I have not tried GWX so have no first-hand experience, but not as a result of any view that NYGM is better). I imagine BOTH are terrific, and am looking for some feedback on how they differ!
Cheers all.
Hey ST.
You're best bet would be to go to the GWX website (http://gwx.mysite.orange.co.uk/) and check the features section. And of course, you should read the manual for a more detailed view of what GWX 2.0 is all about.

No worries at all Steeltrap. Seriously.
My only thought is that it is a bit early to really 'grade' or rate GWX 2.0.
Its only been out three days for those donating to Subsim. Full release isn't until the 16th.

Understand, Kpt Lehmann, but I'm not really looking for a 'grade' as such (I think such a thing is unlikely to be very valuable, anyway, as preferences in play experiences are innumerable!). I have NYGM experience, so I was hoping someone might be able to comment on what is similar and what is different.
I'll almost certainly d/l 2.0 and try it myself, anyway, but will have to organise d/l etc (would donate but no credit card/paypal). I'll also check out that link and read up on it more myself (thanks for suggestion, Dowly).
Cheers all!
Have fun and I hope you enjoy GWX!

I doubt you'll be disappointed :arrgh!:
is pissing a naughty word ?
I used to play NYGM ages ago and I really enjoyed it too, I moved over to GWX because it had more - well just more stuff (for me personally)
Truth be told -there is no right or wrong here and I dont think anyone can tell you as its down to personal preference. You just need to try everthing and decide what suits you best.

That's pretty much what I expect. I was interested to see if anyone can comment on how things such as aircraft, escorts etc differ between them, both in type and behaviours.
Anyway, I'll d/l when it becomes available (have to plan, as it will take a while!). Things such as the subs' physics, deck/flak gun behaviour, crew medals/promo/performance etc etc all interest me. Those were all tweaked in NYGM, as were things like convoy and patrol routes, so I'm looking forward to seeing how GWX has done them.
Who knows - I might even end up writing a commentary/comparison on each. If I did, I would stress the 'here is how they differ' and not attempt to say one is superior. As has been stated - by me and others - such a conclusion depends entirely on playing style and taste, so to suggest either is 'better' is probably pretty artificial.
Looking forward to things being available in the land of Oz....!!
Cheers

is pissing a naughty word ?
:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
Depends. In Australia we use it in many ways:
Heavy rain - "It's pissing down out there"
Waste of effort/overly optimistic - "You're pissing in the wind"
Flattery - "You're pissing in my pocket"
Enebriation - "You're pissed as a parrot"
A discussion of who is better at something, or also a battle of egos, or a drinking competition - "A pissing contest"
Anger - "He was really pissed about it"
Hmmmm....I could go on for a while. I'd never really thought of how popular and versatile it is in Australia!
Cheers

I was trying to confine it to "pissed" or variations thereof....
But you're correct, that is the most common variety...

Hmmm, the things we do waiting for 2.0 to be available.....

Must say it's been fun to see some familiar faces here. I've been lurking in SH4, but I've given up on that - ticks me off too much that there are soooo many things where they just imported the issues from SH3 without fixing them.
I remember lots of posts here some years back (particularly must take note of some of Dowly's very funny pics/post.....btw, what happened to the Emu/Ostrich avatar??).
Cheers

TBH it's a long story, but as briefly as I can make it ;)
Once upon a time there was a Chief of the boat called jimbuna who put up a TS server for communications purposes between the Grey Wolves. blah blah blah...and jimbuna who by this time was becoming frustrated with Dowly's attitude said "Now listen up ya little feckin ferret" blah blah blah.......and the name has stuck ever since

SH4 rocks :yep: And so does SH3, sheesh. When will this stop, im even finding myself taking sides at times and i will always lean towards SH4 cause of the Pacific is out my front door so to speak here in little ole New Zealand. But i never thought i would come to the day where i would be offended when someone makes fun of my beloved Silent Hunter 4! :rotfl:we have seen arguments & suspensions cause of it. Its crazy. We are all virtual submariners and should fully support each game to the death.
Im really looking forward to Uboats addon for SH4 but hey we all know SH3 players are going to diss it to death, and no doubt we Pacific wolves will defend it to death! :) Yet after all the fault finding has laid to rest some of us might be shocked to find we're all manning the same ship so to speak.
Anyway @ Steeltrap: To early to say as im trying out NYGM for the first time 2nd patrol Nov 1939 but i would say (going by my experience with GWX 1.3) if you want nice graphics with good enough AI go GWX. But if your not really worried about graphics stick with NYGM.
Or if you just want good enough gameplay thanks to the SH4 modders with graphic effects that would make Microsoft Aero glass graphic artists jealous with envy well come on over to SH4 :D
(sorry couldn't help myself) :rotfl:

Normally swear words come in four letters. Being that SH4 is only two letters and a number, theoretically it can not be concidered a swear word. It does however bring chills to some because of it buggy release. But alas, it won't be long before the uboats will be bobbing about in the SH4 environment. If we think logically, perhaps the devs will workout all the remaining bugs (very small handful) because the uboat addon is forthcoming. A point to ponder. Forget the us and them, it is all about interest in submarines/uboats and a simulation.
Anyway, were forgot this one: I would rather be pissed off than pissed on.

I'm also in the process of moving on from NYGM to GWX 2.0. In my case, the rationale is pretty simple - it's just far more up-to-date with recent modding developments, whereas NYGM has not been updated for months and unlikely to ever be. Whatever mod I used as base - be it RUb, NYGM or GWX - I always ended up customizing it to oblivion. With GWX 2.0, I'm just giving it some time to settle in and see what I'd wish to change about it myself.
Before, I didn't want to switch off NYGM due to the sensor modeling there, which I still consider superior to anything else out there, but I guess between the million new features that GWX 2.0 has by comparison and the fact I've actually gotten used to playing various SHIV varieties which remind me more of GWX than NYGM sensors, I figured I might as well update.
The beauty of major mods is that they provide stable platforms for further developments and tweaks. I think GWX 2.0 will be that platform for the foreseeable future, so I don't see any reason not to switch.
