You can get at the base system using something like netcat, reprogram it to boot a linux bootloader like Grub, and then install Gentoo (Gentoo is desirable since you compile all components from the ground up - the makes it optimized for the platform it is on) or some other OS on it. You can then log into the box using telnet or ssh using a program like Putty. Works good. I have a 500 GB mini system online like this.

I agree that the solution is rather extreme, but, I think the key note here is;
Western Digital has blocked users from sharing more than 30 different file types, if they are using the company's software, called Anywhere Access.
As far as I can tell, you have to manually install this. It isn't pre-installed on hard drives, and was mainly designed for their worldbook thing, which, while nice, is something you can easily do with a home computer. I can't see this thing becoming all that popular except perhaps in business, for which it appears to be designed for, not your average consumer.
