51 GB HD DVD has been approved for sale

Seems that HD DVD finially got a compatible disc that is in excess of anything Blu-Ray, but just barely. I wonder if this will work in existing players?

Blu-Ray has a 100 GB disc in the works, but apparently it is not compatible with the players. Probably intended for computer storage.

I do not see the $250 player they mention either. More movies are on HD DVD as well. To top it off, Sony's CEO has had a change of heart and said they are in a stalemate with HD DVD. Seems to me, he is being conservative with those words - he should say they are being defeated by HD DVD. Quite an upset I'd say after all the hoopla about them being number one.

On the contrary...BD is beating the pants off of HD-DVD, so much so that HD-DVD players have had to come down in price to remain competitive.

I'd rather sell a player than a BLu-Ray disc. The player represents future business. Also, the story is quite the opposite if you leave the states with HD DVD being #1 in Europe. As for rentals, the HD DVD out-rents the Blu-Ray 2 to 1 according to NetFlix. So things are a toss up still.

In all seriousness, I'm not posting this to pick a fight (especially as I've found many of your posts to be very intelligent and insightful), but which is it then?

Well, I'm on the fence on this one. In one way, I see the players zipping off the shelves, and if you remove the PS3 from the equation, HD DVD has a much larger installed base. WIth PS3 in the picture, Blu-Ray still has the lead.

On the next note, I see the movie studios not producing titles at the same rate for Blu-Ray. We've got the CEO of Sony saying they are in a stalemate. I mean I could go on all day.

The point is, this is a turnabout to what has been happening - SOny lost its ground, and HD DVD has the momentum.

This is so like what happened with Betamax. It is a near repeat in history.

I'd lean towards them being in trouble, especially if the CEO of Sony says he wished right now that they made a Universal format with Toshiba. To me, that tells me he doesn't hold high hopes for the future of Blu-Ray.

But on the flip side, it is still too early to tell. Only time will tell.

So there - I gave you a semi wishy washy answer with the lean towards Sony being in trouble! :D
