Glad you got the new card, Nikbear. :)
You had an Ati card before, yes?
Have you properly uninstalled the Ati drivers?

Congratulations on the new vid card. Use driver cleaner utility (google it) to remove any traces of older ATI catalyst drivers. There is also a nvidia "fix" floating somewhere at subsim (came across a link in some other thread). If all else fails, use "forced" V-sync from nvidia global drivers settings. It sometimes doesn't work for SH3 because of the custom resolution dll thingy. Goodluck

Spot on. V-Sync is causing the problem.
Basically, cos your FPS is now running higher than the refresh rate of your monitor, you get flickers/image ripping.

Yep Stierlitz, thanks for the recommendation, its made a BIG difference:up: got rid of the old Ati drivers and such like fine.never heard of this V-sync before, will have to look into it,I do remember something about a nvidia fix but for the life of me can't seem to find it on this site's archive:damn: If anybody has it please pass it on;) fenris_wolf,please could you tell me how do I use/find this 'forced' V-sync.Also does anybody have any setting suggestions for this card,at the moment just turned up the anti-ailiasing thing up full as well as the other thingy, cant remember and I'm not on my puter so you'll have to bear with me:doh: just to get rid of the jaggies, but there is other stuff in the control panel and I'd appreciate some advice on what to put these at to make GWX really shine in all its glory:yep:  thank you.

Your screen refresh rate is running at 60-75hz. You need to find the right "hz" that match your monitor and video card together. Here is a great website for you

Actually Ati supplies the best cleaner themselves its called the ATI software uninstall utility(0.11mb). Its nvidia that requires a cleaner to remove ghosts

Great Video-Card mate:up: I have a EVGA 7600GT. I won't get all technical on you, but here's how to override the game settings using Nvidia.
Go to Nvidia Control Panel - Appearances - Advance Settings.
From here, select SH3.exe. Here's the presets I use which work well on my Pentium IV and 1.5 GB RAM.
Anisotropic - 16x
Antiaaliasing - 4x
Texture Filtering - Quality
Trilinear Optimization - on
Vertical Sync - Depends on the refresh rate of your monitor. If you get flickering, force it on.
Leave everything else on defaults.
Apply, and you're all set to go:up:

Nikbear--
U can find the NVIDIA control panel either in 1) the taskbar--it's a small green icon, just hover your mouse over the icons and you should see one that says, "NVIDIA Settings." Click on the icon and look for the menu item, "NVIDIA Control Panel," or 2) go into the computer control panel and look for NVIDIA Control Panel there.
When you open the NVIDIA Control Panel, look for "3D Settings" and then "Manage 3D settings." Click on the tab that says "Program Settings." Scroll down and look for SH3 (you may have to add it if you don't see it in the list, just click on the "Add" button and then browse to the folder where you have installed SH3 and look for the SH3.exe file). Once that is done, you should be able to set your settings.
Good luck and don't worry about asking more questions. We'll help you get through all right!

Thanks to everyone for your help, subtype zero,I found the nvidia control panel hidden in the display folder, and the nvidia taskbar icon wasn't enabled, but it was when I downloaded the drivers:doh: anyway thank you for your help,I shall give the game a spin with new settings and see how things look,oh was wondering cause I'm running 2g of ram could I bump up the AA from 4 to 8s,any ideas:hmm: or will it muck things up or won't it make that much difference:hmm:

On the horns of a dilema here,I'm running AA at x4,Anisotropic at x16,Tex filter is on quality and Trilinear is on.If I put V-sync on,it gets rid of the flickering in the control room but the sub doesn't glide through the water,it seems to 'chug chug' and stutter a bit when you watch it using free cam,no V-sync and it glides fine but the flickering comes back:damn: also I've noticed without V-sync some of the icons in the crew room are blurred:hmm: not really sure what to do:oops: I can run the game at 75Hz would this improve matters?sorry for all the questions but I haven't a clue what to do for the best:oops: all help greatly appreciated:up: thank you.

Try lowering either anisotropic from x16 to x8 or AA from x4 to x2. You may have to lower both.
How fast is your CPU? Maybe it is the choke point?

CPU is a P4 3.06.hopefully not a choke point:hmm:

I have a PIV 3.2. On AS 16x and AA 4x, I'm getting 75 FPS on the bridge and 35 FPS when there's explosions anywhere. I have a hunch that something is wrong with your monitor max refresh rate and/or. At this point in time, expirimenting with various high refresh rates and v-sync might be your best bet.
Also, make sure that you use ctrl+F8 to view your in-game FPS to see how high/low it is.
