I was surfing the net today looking for information on WW2 subs, feeling inspired by sh4, and i cam across this document from WW2 concerning the tactical doctrine employed by USN subs during 1944. For those who want immersion, this document may help alot, and makes for some good reading, not to mention gives some tips on how to run thier boats.

here is the link http://www.history.navy.mil/library/online/sub_doctrine.htm

next thing i did after this was headed to my big storage box of books and got out Clay Blair Jr's Silent Victory, which to me is THE end all be all of ww2 books on the sub war in the pacific.

lol im so hooked

While searching with SJ use power training. When contact is made shift to hand training and develop the contact by obtaining range and bearing. Shift to lobe switching as soon as possible. In applying radar information use both the TDC and plot. When the contact is enemy, develop the contact for attack. Take full advantage of visibility conditions, going to radar depth, when necessary, to avoid detection; and then to periscope depth to deliver the attack when the visibility permits periscope observations. In reduced visibility the attack may be carried out undetected with the submarine on the surface. This is more desirable and more effective than a submerged attack as the submarine retains the advantage of mobility and high speed

It's already there in TMaru. IIRC it's the ' key on my keyboard, or the key next to the "Rudder amidships" key. Could be something else in a US keyboard.

Reading this, it would seem this practice of both SH3 and SH4 sound operators giving "contact, bearing XXX, at X speed, T range." Is incorrect. It seems the sound operator should be adept at counting blade pulses, and giving an estimated speed. Not slow, medium, or fast. I always thought there was something odd about this bit of comunication.

Wow what an excellent document. All that detail has me slavering at the mouth to have it in-game.

"Stow 20mm guns approx. 30 minutes before diving"

"During daylight surface cruising keep one torpedo forward and one torpedo aft set to run at forty feet"

All this can be done in stock game.

This is all possible in the stock game. No mod necessary.
