Best Sub Type and Upgrades

Good Morning Gentlemen,
Let me apologize in advance if this was covered in some other post somewhere, but I could not find it.

My question or one of them is this, of the avaliable types of submarines in both Peral and Asiatic, which would be the best? Which one performs in what way and why; and why do you perfer it?

My second question is how does the upgrade system work in SHIV, ie radar deck guns aa guns new subs ect?

I appreciate your help and for referance I'm using TM 1.7 with REL NSM.

Personally, I'm addicted to having surface search radar (SJ I think?). I hate patrolling without one. After that I go for the Improved SD Radar (Air radar) to get a quicker heads up on aircraft. I usually spend most of my renown on crew upgrades. As I never battle it out with aircraft, I don't worry about upgrading anti-air...same for my deck gun- I rarely use it.

As far as subs, I like the Gato and Balao- the only difference being that that Balao has a thicker hull and can go deeper.

RE sub types.

The sub types in SH4 are the ones used in the pacfic theater, however, they represent an evolution in design. Not all commands being offered are "upgrades".

Progressivly you could say, in order of evolution:

S class -> Porpoise -> Salmon -> Sargo -> Tambor-> Gar-> Gato-> Balao

I have had the Balao down to 450or460m with the 1.4patch at a speed of 9knots i like the Balao very much cos it is so big:rock: :rock: i hope this can help.

I've received conning tower upgrades and offers of better subs after some patrols during campaigns. I'm sure it's also a date thing. Not sure about other details of how it works though as I haven't survived more than 2 patrols yet :dead: :arrgh!:

The Gato is the best that I've used. Have yet to try a Balao.
