View Full Version : H.M.S. Nelson.........GOES DOWN!!

This afternoon I ran into the Nelson and sank her :D
I had already been on patrol, sinking 28,000t and had 6 torpedoes left. So I thought I'd hang around off the N.W. tip of Ireland for a few days.
Got a radio contact for a convoy to the north, so I got in it's path in plenty time, across its bows. Periscope up, a little look - front row of the convoy comes into sight, nicely in line. So I'm thinking, that's odd, where's the destroyers? Second line comes into view in line behind the first with a warship in it; again I'm thinking that's odd a destroyer being in there (bear in mind I've only been playing SH3 for 2 or 3 weeks LOL). Click on it on the map and lo and behold it's the Nelson! I was GOBSMACKED!
After I'd got over the shock/excitement I didn't have much work to do. The way I'd positioned myself, she was going to sail across my bow on a perpindicular course, at about 500 metres! Happy days. Not only that - when I had initially seen the hydrophone contacts I'd stopped my boat half way between the warship and a madium tanker; so I could have an aft shot at that too.
Everything went to plan - a torpedo in Nelsons magazine and one in her fuel bunker, she went down in minutes. I actually couldn't believe how easily she went down. After I'd confirmed there were no other warships I surfaced to create havoc with the deck gun.
So I'd sunk 2 with torps and went on to sink another 5 with the deck gun before breaking off to chase a couple of large ones that had broken away. I had 2 torpedoes remaining. I had hoped to sink the large merchant with 1 and the large cargo with the other (I was out of gun ammo) but in the end I'd to use the last torp to finish off the large merchant.
So in all I sank 8 ships from the convoy of 13 (I ignored the other 4 small merchants/freighters) for a total of 103,725t. And with the tonnage of the other 4 ships before that, I came home with 12 kills (pretty good for a VIIb, I think) for 132,026t.
I know I'm playing on only 41% realism (I have been increasing it slightly and gradually) but I'm well pleased with myself! Especially as that was only my second convoy encounter. I've read of people on here who have played for quite some time and not seen a capital ship at all. So to see one after 2 or 3 weeks gaming I'm really surprised and pleased.
P.S. I have a few screenies just in case anyone wants to see them.

Bravo - wish I could have been there. But with the description, I almost was - gritting my teeth as the torps cracked her fuel bunker - flinching and bouncing as the 88 shells ripped through merchant steel.
Good job Kaleun!

Congratulations from me ! I play for a 2 months and began from 100% . It is hard sometimes but you are right i saw only once a battleship (queen elizabeth i think(with the many board guns) and in another encounter a carrier ( this time manged to sink it :))
In any case, Keep up the good work fellow Kaleun !

Good work, still waiting to see my big battleship. Then again, I usually end up having about 3 eels left by the time I reach my patrol area

Your time will come, I'm sure. And if two were enough for the Nelson, think what you could do with your three! :hmm:
Happy hunting.

I think my first BB was a Revenge Class...caught it around AM grid in the middle of the night. I didn't have the best firing position, but I only had one chance as she sailing at great speed. I fired a spread shot of all four forward tubes set to impact, the first passed infront of her bow, but the other three impacted under A and B turret, followed by the last midships, was really dissapointed not to see her magazine or fuel bunkers go up but I still got a nice entry in the logbook. She came to a stop and was adrift for about 15 minutes until she finally went down to 'ol Davie Jones' locker! (Thats the Royal Navy for you lol...damage control is pretty darn good!) I had to dissapear quickly though as I didn't want to chance it with the DD escorts, escaped quite easily. I play with all options enabled apart from external camera, whats the point of having eye candy if you can't see it :arrgh!:.
I think I've got screens somewhere on my photobucket album too so I'll post them if anyone wants to see the damage.
Congratulations on your first BB kill Nerazzurri...always an achievement!
EDIT: Found the only screenshot I took, Revenges' last moments!
(I've just noticed, this isn't the right screen, shes going down stern first...I've hit the same convoy a few times on different careers so I think this is a later kill)

If someone tells me how to post without URLs, yes.
I have a screenie of Nelson in my scope. No 'after' ones because I was busy with the convoy :arrgh!:

Still waiting for a confirmed registration email from imageshack - GOD they're slow.
Doing it the way described in the how to, does your image appear in the thread, rather than just a link?
No need for registration....

To post an image do the following, quite easy really :p.
put the tag infront of your file url, and end it with ....so you should get
http://www.insertyourpichere.co.uk[img]http://www.insertyourpicturehere.co.uk
(dont put the space in on end tag like I have, its just for show so it doesnt think there is a picture which doesn't exist and show blank space!)
Do this and your picture will show on your post. Remember some forums are slightly different and need [IMG] in caps to work others just lower case.

So many Nelson sinking threads lately. Makes one surprised the real Nelson and her sister ship survived the war.:hmm:
Too bad the Hood wasn't included among the ship models. You could beat the Bismarck to it.

I once saw the Revenge in port...at the docks. I put three eels into her, but the water was too shallow for her to go down! I went back and she was gone....:nope:
