Discovered something interesting while putting the final touches on the 1.4 mod.

Although the gun reload times are WAY to fast in stock, the RFB times were outrageously too long. I pulled out my old victory at seas dvd's, did some digging, and sure enough, load times were as short as 15-20 seconds but could be twice as long depending on the crew's experience and sea state.

RFB 1.3 had 23 entered for a reload time, which seemed reasonable, but the actual load time could be almost 1.5 miutes or longer at that setting.

Turns out the number is not in seconds, but is a factor that modifies a base value. I didn't play with it a whole lot, but it looks like the base value is 4 sec and the number is a multiplier. Now things made sense- 23 x4 is 92 seconds or an average of 1.5 minutes

Anyway, depending on the gun size and crew experience it looks like load times can be as short as 18 sec or as long as 33 with the new settings.

While testing I noticed something- the guns are NOT totally stabilized when using the scope. The scope is what's completely stable. I was close enough to a boat in the sub school that I noticed the shells were hitting in different places even though the crosshairs were steady. I'd noticed the barrel moving up and down before, but thought it was just an animation. Not so

I placed the crosshairs where I wanted to aim when the boat was at a level point in the roll. Then the shots were timed with the boats rolling to shoot at the top and bottom of the roll. At the peak of the roll the shells always hit high. At the bottom they always hit low. So the scope is stabilized, but the gun sway is only dampened.

Hard to tell what happens when not using the site because the target is so small.

This has me thinking now (ow, my head hurts :) )

Wish it was done better. The scope should move with the deck, and you should fire based on the crosshair being level with the horizon.

Yep. The gun trainers just tried to hold their aim in the same place. It was the gun Captain/Sightsetter that made adjustments.

See how these work for you:

Well, the shots with that mod go all over the place, but as gunner I have zero control of it.

The camera needs to move with the deck. Looking through the sight should be exactly the same as looking through the TBT with stabilization off.

Tater, didn't the cannons have some sort of leveling action to account for rocking of the submarine?

No.

The elevation was set for the desired range (assuming a level deck). The guy who fired the gun was looking through a scope and fired the round when the scope was level. That meant the deck was level, and the round would land at the aimed distance.

Imagine them cranking wheels to try and counter elevate for the roll. The azimuth would need to do the same if the deck pitched.

BTW, the explanation for how they layed the guns was in Silent Running by Calvert.
