Ok, let me walk you through the situation, because I'm worried that I've 'broken' SH3 somehow. I'm running SH3 updated to 1.4b, and have then installed GWX 1.03. The only other mod I'm running is the Torpedo damage final mod.

Sailing a type VIIC in 1941 loaded with typeIII electric torpedoes, I keep intercepting convoys. My general use tactic is to come to a stop at periscope depth at one of the leading corners of the convoy. Normally, I can hear an escort in the lead, and one out to the left/right side (depending whether I'm positioned at the left/right corner).

As the lead escort comes past my bow, I move (on silent running) forwards towards the centreline of the convoy, looking for the juiciest targets. As I'm at approximately 90 deg. to the convoy's path, the torpedo solutions are simple if i can get the range/speed accurately. Generally I can hit more than one ship each time.

At this point, with the stricken ship sinking, I head down to 150m depth at half-speed (figuring that the convoy now knows there's a sub about) before cutting back to silent running again and heading for one of the rear corners of the convoy to escape. I sit hesitantly, awaiting the depth charges that I've been used to in 1939-40...

But they don't come. The first time this happened, I congratulated myself on such a stealthy attack and evasion. Then it happened again. And a third time. Three times now I've attacked different convoys, sinking about 8 ships, and the escorts haven't even blinked! No rushing to the scene, no spurious DC attacks in the hope that I'm still where I attacked from, not even a change in speed or course...

The only thing I can think of that's changed since 1940 is that I've upgraded from a VIIB to VIIC sub, and that I now solely use type III torps (following an unpleasent incident with an aircraft carrier), instead of type I steamers.

Is it me, or is something not right? Perhaps someone who knows GWX can comment? Is it broken, or am I now the best Kaleun in the sea? I'm reluctant to believe the latter...

I have been having similar experiences with my IXB and IXC in 41. I haven't been completely ignored, but the escorts definitely seem never to get a firm fix on me making evasion not nearly as hard as it used to be earlier in the war.

Using patched Vanilla + GWX 1.03 at 100% realism (and map update turned off!)"

There is something wrong but what I dont know

try saving and resetting your difficulties to a different setting
then switch back other than that I dont have a real suggestion

That's what I mean. I was expecting the escorts to get better, not worse, as the war progresses...

Perhaps I'll surface right next to an escort and a mechant to see whether they react. Some of the merchants now have gun turrets so hopefully they'll shoot back.

The game does do some things. After the attack, convoy lights come one searching for me. All the ships start to weave, and other nearby merchants also light up searching the waves with their lights. It's just the escorts. Ships are exploding in the middle of the convoy and they just plug on regardless.

It's just not exciting without the thrill of the chase! I'm now shooting rats in a barrel with a shotgun... :shifty:

Man i'm not sure what i did to offend the sub gods then - I had an 8 hour game time punishment from hell from two black swans  currently in early-mid 41 the boat barely came out the other side in one piece! The 2 patrol for U 105 was almost its last! Almost rammed in fog, depth charged to hell n back and bounced by aircraft half a days sail from Loreient! One bomb hit the bridge smashing both periscopes and killing my AA crew and watch officer :dead:

Patrol number 3 is going more my way so far :p

could it be that your attack was stealthy enough so that they had no idea where you were and they began searching at random?

this could be the case.

try running away from the scene at flank speed and see what happens.

im confused as to why they wouldnt come take you down... unless your approach to the convoy was well executed, you got close to the convoy lanes, fired your shots all without making a great deal of noise.

thats the only scenario i could see the escorts not finding you.

I also seem to remember the skill level of the AI is randomised for each ship? With things getting together in the later years - It could just be that your running into n00b crews - you lucky bugger!

@Siber

It doesn't sound right to me mate :nope: Normally I'd enquire as to what mods your using but I see your using the same one I am on my 1.03 installation :hmm:

All I can suggest is you use JSGME to uninstall the mod and see if that makes a difference, or alternatively, check how you installed with my instructions below.

In any event, GWX 2.0 is due for release soon and all you'll need for that is a fresh install of SH£ and 1.4b patch :arrgh!:

1. Uninstall SH3 via Windows' "Add/Remove programs"
2. Open Windows Explorer and:
- *delete* the folder where you had installed SH3
- *delete* the \My Documents\SH3 folder
3. Reinstall SH3
4. If your SH3 did not come with patch v1.4b already included, install patch v1.4b. Ensure you install the patch that corresponds to your copy of SH3 (Download/DVD/EMEA/US)
5. OPTIONAL: Copy and paste this "clean" install as a backup to avoid the need to follow steps 1-3 if your game becomes corrupt in future
6.Download into the SAME folder GWX.exe and the five .bin files. While there grab the v1.03 patch
7. Run GWX.exe and follow the installation prompts
8. Run GWX103.exe and follow the installation prompts
9. SH3 COMMANDER USERS: Download the GWX 1.02+ Cfg files for SH3 Commander and unzip the contents DIRECTLY into your SH3 Commander\Cfg folder.

Ah well, doesn't matter... Somehow my career deleted itself...

So, I'm taking my computer offline or an upgrade, ready for GWX 2.0 to make my Xmas holiday! woohoo!
