Hello everyone, 1st post. My cousin is an Air Force transport pilot. I was talking to him about transport planes and he mentioned how the huge C-5 Galaxy is in desperate need of upgrades (autopilot system is a broken POS, etc) but it can't be retired. When I asked why, he said there is certain cargo that can only be carried by the C-5. I asked about tanks, but he said "No, no, it's the only plane we have that'll fit certain mini subs for seals"---What mini subs (note he said sub"S", plural) is he talking about? I thought the ASDS would fit in a C-5 or C-17 and there's only 1 in service. So .......what is it?

Or maybe these:

Also bear in mind it may be a weight, rather than a size limitation he is referring to, which may affect the operational radius of the aircraft for certain parts of the world without effective air to air refuelling coverage.
