Hi All,
In the middle of a patrol to Eastern China Sea - i've been through some rough fights, hull damage is at 96.
I have returned to Midway to refit - the damage stays.
Am I boned? Is there a way to repair hull damage? All of my systems are 'repaired' but in upper left it says hull damage 96.
Any help would be greatly appreciated -- i can't dive at all without my sub collapsing in on itself immediately.
Thanks in advance. :arrgh!:

Sounds like it's time to head back to Pearl, mate :arrgh!:

I'd get to a major base pronto. Some structural damage just can't be fixed at a forward base.

thanks guys - i was just worried about doing that as my patrol mission doesn't list as being complete. duty over dishonor :) are there any negatives to cutting your patrol short?

Not really, make as many missions as possible. 96%:o . Head back to the barn man, do not submerge!

thanks for the advice :) i did return. i was given the option to retire 'on a high note' or recieve a new command - i got a porpoise, brought it back at 86% and was again given the option to retire, declined and i'm back to tambor :)
i think i'll try to do a less dramatic patrol this time

Good Lord!
Your boat must be held together by chewing gun and duct tape. I can see that this is going to start a rash of posts about % damage and depth dived etc. After all there is only 3% more damage that can be sustained; and I would love to see what that boat looks like:rotfl: .
So let the bragging begin....
...i've been through some rough fights...
, hull damage is at 96.
You--my friend--are the Lord of Understatement !

Yea,
As soon as you can. You are in deep trouble. Pray that you get there.

I am brand new to SH4, but really liked SH3 (nope, not starting another comparison thread...) but this surprises me...96% and head back to base?
Man, my crappy VIIC limped back with parts hanging off it and I had a XXI that was riddled with pock marks after a run in with 3xE-boats and 2-Tribals/1xHunt-II...needless to say it was a bit uncomfortable on the float back, but 96% is scratched paint
or am I really missing the point? again, I am way new to SH4 so sorry if I am just waving my ignorance.

Yeah you are...the damage meter in SH4 is reversed. It starts at 0% so 96% is about as bad as you can get and still survive. The SH3 equivelent would be like having your hull damage indicator showing 4%.

Oops! Thanks! As I said, am just now learning so please pardon my ignorance...guess they take "Hull Damage" literally.
Still getting adjusting to all of the differences between 3/4...its like, to me, they really should have called it something else
Like "Wolves of the Pacific, loosely affiliated with the SH franchise"...or something to that effect

The H.I read out is the other way here.
In SH3, 96% means, 96% of the hull remains
In SH4, 96% means, 96% of the hull is GONE.

but that brings the other question...if 96% of the hull is vapor...or does it mean that one has taken 96% of the losses that the integrity of the hull can withstand?
sorry, I never claimed to be any semblance of "smart"...and to worsen matters I am actually an aviator, so this business is completely new to me, but fascinating.
I'd head back after any major damage. Dunno what that maps to in hull %.

What I thought was strange was having two bulkheads damaged, pumps damaged, flooding and my Hull integrity still at 0%. I guess the hull itself didn't take any damage or something.
There are 2 radii for DCs. Min and Max. Up to min, the hull itself takes damage which is cumulative. Between min and max, internal systems take damage under the right conditions.

My rule of thumb is 50% and I'm heading back.

I'll second that. I doubt any skipper would risk his boat (and his CREW, let's not forget that aspect of this game gents!) with his main fighting weapon at 50% (or worse) capability.
If I'm not mistaken, on the army side, a company/battalion etc, if possible, was pulled out of the line if it was at 50% or less effective strength as it was considered non-effective.

You have to close the hatches before you dive.
Seriously though I found out if you return for repairs ( and are not finished with mission ) at home base that you will not get repairs, only torps and ammo. You must abort the mission before you can have your subs hull repaired.
Just hope the ole man ( Admiral ) doesn't get pissed or you'll be on a desk job pushing a pencil.:damn:
I did this once since 1.4 as I got a walloping about 300nm from home base and had 68% of the hull shot up. went to base and clicked on "Refit" only to have all torps + ammo but the hull was NOT fixed. Had to abort.
I think that just sucks, but I can live with it.
Yes, you have to DOCK not refit at major base to get the sub hull repaired. If you don't get a dock option when the anchor icon appears or you get the refit/postpone option , you cannot fix the hull or major components there.
