Question--
Does blowing ballast create noise that lets the DD's zero in on your location? :ping: I know that blowing ballast when you are shallow will force you to the surface, but what about when you are deep and desperate to reverse your descent from flooding? One or two blows usually doesn't force you to the surface (is this realistic?), but I was wondering how much noise it makes.

Danke.

Don't know if this is modelled in game or not. Should be easy to test though.

Find a nice place with lots of DD's sneak in nice and deep and the blow ballast to see if there is a reaction. It should wake them up but I can't say I've ever done it near a DD except in dire emergncy and they knew I was about anyway, cos I'd just sunk 2 of their ships.

i dont know but question is ok, you can go on single mission turn noise metter on and try to do it under dd and let us know:up:

Noise from blowing ballast is not modelled in game. It will not alert ASW assets in the vicinity.

Nor do the Atlas Eschalot pings attract any attention... or your own active sonar pings.

There's a few little holes like that.

Opening your bow caps should give the enemy an opportunity to hear you... but it doesn't... also not modelled in SH3.

Thanks. I'd always wondered about the 'Depth under keel' function, if I was actually raising a big flag to the circling DD's, saying "I'm over here, please sink me!". I figured if it did attract attention, at least I'd know exactly how deep the water I had died in was :D

It should get their attention... Too bad that it doesn't. Would be more realistic that way.

Really?!

Didn't know that. I felt sure they can hear that :hmm:

I did the DUK ping just the other nightjust incase I had to CD...nothing changed as far as the search for me...
Last night I was in a mission and did the blow balasts and to my suprise nothing came my way...but I agree with Kpt...it should
try turning on the gramaphone and see...

Gramaphone doesn't either.....and the submarine stealth meter is just an indicator of the fact you may be generating noise as opposed to a clear indication the escorts can hear you.

I never used the echolot to mesure the bottom or blowed balast while sneaking. Its surprise that it isnt in the game.

Neither depth pinging or blowing ballast possibly alerting ASW is modeled in the game? Pity. Hmmm. A further question: in RL, do these enable a hunter to pinpoint your location or only your general vicinity?

At least now I know I can stagger around like a drunken unterbootsman, carousing, singing Brag's Hoochie Woochie chorus, and clanging wrenches off the pipes without fear of waking up the whole darned neighborhood! :p

There are still things that I need to learn about in the game. What is a Echalot ping?

Hi Kaleuns,
From my experience blowing ballast certainly has no effect on senses of DD's close to me. For example when approaching convoy at maybe 120m (silent), once past lead escort I turn about 30 degrees and get up to periscope depth quickly using 2 knots (silent) and 1 or 2 short 'Blow ballast' (on TC 1 ONLY !!!) - normally gets me up right in centre on the convoy quickly enough. Otherwise I find it takes too long to get to PD from 120m under the lead DD, especially in a type IX.
Hope that's useful to someone...
