Is it just foolhardy to try and attack a harbor at night on Honshu? I thought I would atl least check and see what y'all say.

Go for it, Just be aware that the water is shallow and keep an eye out for escorts.

In stock SH4 1.4 it's entirely doable, if not almost easy. In real life it would have most likely been a suicide.

How far away do you normally have to be from the harbor before you can determine if there are targets? I saw the subchaser and medium gunboat on station, but no other targets. Is it just luck of the draw to determine if there are targets anchored?

Not suicide if done correctly. The Wahoo was famous for this tactic.

It makes sense you would see the harbor patrols before docked ships. If you can see the docks, you'd be seeing the targets. At night, in 1.3 + TM, I needed to be within 6000 yds to detect them.
Wahoo's harbor attacks were not what is so easy in SH4. In SH4 you get missions to go into Tokyo Bay, or #@$%!$#@@^@ Kure, lol.
Sticking your nose even a little into an open harbor like Wewak was Medal of Honor territory in RL. No US subs went into harbors like you can do in SH4 routinely.
When I start redoing harbors, it will become totally impossible most places without cheating and using external cams. I'm thinking of random sub nets, all the good looking hiding places heavily mined, loads of small craft with a few DCs on them, etc.
I think Wahoo style raid should indeed be possible, just not huge Japanese ports, the Inland Sea, etc.

Does anyone know if the ships at anchor now respond to the sinking of harbor patrol craft in v1.4? The reason I ask is that it was easier in earlier versions to line up an attack on unsuspecting harbor patrol first, get them out of the picture before they get in to hunter mode and then pick of the ships at anchor because the just did not respond to the mayhem going on around them.

Good question, I was trying to sink the subchaser at anchor, but he saw me. That was the point where I decided running away was a prefered tactic.
