Hey all, cody here again.=P... Here is some more questions. First of all, thanks for anwsering my previous ones. 2nd,...well...I just completed a mission droppin off a secret agent not far from Japan, west of Japan... After that,I thought I'd click on "report status" and "report contacts" only workable on the surface. When I clicked one of them I got a new mission... Does anybody do them? Or just go back and RTB? And if I did it,would I get anything extra out of it? Thanks

I've heard that the more objectives you complete, the more renown (this is why you should send contact reports if you can). I do them if I have most of my torps, but I guess it's personal preference to do these. It is nice to go to port and give the men some promotions though. And if you do chose to complete them, they will not keep on coming. As soon as you're low on torps they won't send more (at least I've never been sent any).
I recomend you go for them, because it's more fun to get into some combat then ride home to port.
But again, it's personal preference.

Got ya,thanks much!,later tonight ill erase my line for heading home, and create some new ones for the new mission!,Thanks again!
Subs would do those missions and then continue on to their main job--sinking ships :yep:. After all--the free world is counting on you!!! After the Special Missions are done it's :arrgh!: time!!!
I've heard that the more objectives you complete, the more renown (this is why you should send contact reports if you can).
Do you mean that every time you send a report you get a secondary objective ?
I am in the middle of y 1943, and I have never got one secondary objective even if I always complete the main one and I use all my torps before going back home port.
I am interesseted in secondary objective, so If anyone has an idea to get it feel free to explain me please...
Thanks
Raifg
After patrol area marker turns grey send a STATUS report and you will get a new objective providing you have enough torps and fuel, you can get a secondary objective if you spot a convoy of 3 ship or more and send a COTNACT report and of course you must be on the surface :arrgh!:

...FUEL! As we all know, in the early 40's, the distance between Pearl and the patrol destination are so very far apart, one is forced to make a stop at Midway, and then run at 1/3, porpoising as often as possible, to make it to the patrol zone with enough "go-juice" to wander about for whatever-period-of-time. Actually, due to this factor, I've shut off the "Limited Fuel" as, far too often, I was forced to "Full" or even "Flank" to evade or pursue a fast-moving contact. I was finally convinced to take fuel consumption out of the equation on one mission where I ran out of diesel with my batteries uncharged - almost within sight of Midway! Unlike the old "Silent Service," there isn't the option to call for a tow and suffer a reprimand!
Probly why I've never played out of Pearl. Always out of Manila in a Suger boat, never run out of fuel even though there is no Tender until 42. Only use batteries to dive for planes and attacking cause charging batteries consumes more fuel. :arrgh!:

As long as you have munitions (torpedoes) aboard you will continue to recieve new orders. Thats just the way the game is coded.
If your low on fuel use your disgression and go get some more. But... that will re-fill your stores of torpedoes as well. So it becomes sort of a vicious cycle.
The only way to avoid this is to either a.) Do not call in a mission report and debrief after returning to base or b.) get rid of all your torps (hopefully into the side of enemy shipping) before calling home.
Of course you can also use this to your advantage and do several missions before returning to home port amassing a ridiculous amount of tonnage and renown.
Long story short if you have torps left you get more missions. It disregards your fuel state.

The magic number on torpedos is 5. If you have six, you'll get a new mission, anything under that, you can just turn for home.
Thank your for your answers
I will try this evening.
I have completed my principal mission, so it will be easy to try that ...

This is a nice feature in the game, no more single objectives, this was a drawback in SH3.

Hrm seems like Ive recieved addittional orders with as few as 3 on board. Maybe it depends on the boat.

I keep going until all torps are gone. Then I head on home. I have never been retired to a desk job.

@mcarlsonus - The reason you are having fuel problems is that you are cruising at 1/3 speed, which is inefficient. You get by far the most miles-per-gallon at around 9.5 knots for non S-class subs (You have to set this on the knotmeter directly, no telegraph speed gives you it in stock).
If you do this you will find a threefold increase in the distance you can travel. If you leave Midway with full tanks you should be able to reach the coast of japan with about 75% of your fuel left.
There's no need to porpoise, either, it won't help you get any extra mileage.

In addition to helping build renown, completing multiple missions on a patrol is more historically accurate. Boats were usually assigned to patrol more than one area throughout the course of a sortie as intelligence came in, etc.

You were right
I have done three others missions

No, If you visually sight a huge convoy, they will probably send a secondary objective, but sometimes they say to break contact so it's luck of the draw.

My personal favorite. Spotted a small convoy of 3 Jap Sanpans, Sent Contact report for the helluv it. Got Message{ Nice Find, break off contact, RTB at your discretion.} :arrgh!:
one question again !
I wonder if thethis ability to get new missions iis only avalaible since the 1.4 patch?
I say that because each time I pressed those 2 buttons (and I was at surface) nothing happenend, even if I got in my target a big convoy.
So how exactly (detailed instructions) do we get new missions.
Do you complete your first mission ie the one give at port then surface and send a status report, and then you recieve a new one?
What does send contact report do and when should you do it?
I seem to remember in SH3 this feature was either broken or not working unless a certain mod was installed.
Sorry I'm new to SH4 having only bought it about 3 weeks ago, it was worth it and explain why I'm behind on some of these features.

It has always worked like this since version 1.0
1.) Complete your first mission.
2.) If you have munitions left, radio in a status report. A few minutes later you should recieve a new mission. Make sure you have either all messages or recieved messages tab open to see them.
3.) If your out of munitions first return to a 'tender' get re-fitted and then radio in a status report. See 2. above.
Note that if you radio in a status report when you are out of munitions you will not recieve new orders even if you go and re-fit and radio in again. Your only option is to return to home port and dock.
Hope all that makes sense.
ps; radio only works while surfaced
pps; by 'munitions' I mean torpedoes

Do you visually see them? Because it seems it does not work if it's just radar or sonar.

If you wish to report a convoy contact... its risky buisness.
You must witness at least (I believe) [visually as in scope / binocs] three merchants. Escorts do not count.
Once those are 'confirmed' the contact report can be radioed in.
At that point you will either recieve a 'persecute' or 'leave for other assets' reply.
That of course is paraphrasing but you get the idea I hope.

And if you do get off a transmission and start getting a little nervous about being on the surface just go to periscope depth as you can "receive" down to 56 feet ( PD is 54' ) as you can also receive radio station reception at PD but the volume will lower.
In other words don't let them see you on the surface. :nope:
Ok thank you for the precission of the convoy report.
I didn't know the precision about the three merchants and the escorts.
I will try when I will be in face of a convoy :arrgh!:

Its been my experience that getting this report off is usually while scrambling into a crash dive as the shells rain down about me and the escorts steaming at flank in my direction.

Those are probably the elites but there are some "newbies" in some of their fleets that can't see the broadside of a barn nor hear very well. So I just send subpac the info ,settle down to PD, put a big grin on my face and wait for the fight to begin. :arrgh!:
P.S. Doesn't always work but what the hey its only a simulation and its fun. :yep:
