View Full Version : What's this "gu" 600KB Patch 1.4 Patch File?

It showed up in my SHIV program folder after I applied the 1.4 patch. When clicked, it opens the game just as does the SHIV app file, but it's a faster load!

Does this file now activate the game rather than the SHIV app file? Or in combination with it?

I ask because I've got Nhancer tied to the SHIV app file and I want to make sure it's correct so I get my Nhancements...

I noticed it as well and am also wondering what this new file is for. I never ran it though. I would like to know as well.

Actually, that's the "game updater" (auto-patcher if you'd like) and the shortcut on your desktop should actually point to it instead of the sh4.exe.

When the updater is done with its job (of searching for updates), it launches the sh4.exe.

PS: the "gu" is the one responsible for the firewall's pop up telling you Silent Hunter is trying to access the internet.

So, it slows down the loading process, not the way around. Maybe you are experiencing the effects of memory optimisations implemented in this patch.

I noticed last night when launching the game my firewall popped up and requested an internet connection from this file.

I denied it not knowing what it was but the game rany fine anyhow. :hmm:

What's the logic behind adding it with the fourth patch? :hmm: This could have been reasonable by version 1.0 of the game, as there were four patches to come, and users with little knowledge about where to search for updates could benefit.....but now?

....unless...of course.....there are further patches coming :D

Because the next update will also come with an opportunity to pay Ubisoft some do-re-mi. Ubisoft manager: "that needs to be automated, pronto!"

Just for whatevers, I re-moved my "gu" file from the SHIV program file to another folder for "safekeeping" and created another game shortcut using the SHIV.exe file. No connection no mo.

I saw this little bugger. I launch my game off the ATI tray created desktop icon so my card setting for the game will come on. Game fired up fine and loaded like a champ! The red lines gets half way and then the Please Wait pops up. The game loads twice as fast!

Im not usually one for 'conspiray theroies' but I cant help but wonder if a little bit of data mining isnt going on here.

I wasent really implying that the big UBI was spying on us. Was just wondering if they were counting the 'hits' that address recieved giving a rough approximation of popularity of the patch.

But now that I think of it even that data would be more or less worthless as some folks may start / restart their game several times a day ;)

I wonder what should be updated. Can we expect a range of auto-updates? :D

When i uninstalled/reinstalled the game prior to patch, i forgot to remove the old desktop icon (which points to sh4.exe), so i never noticed the difference. :rotfl:

The risk I see is that if the game gets patched on-the-fly, there will be mod-hell... Mods breaking without you wanting it and maybe not even knowing it. This may not be that big of a deal if they only planning on updating a limited set of core files this way, but if any file could get patched this way, then ouch...

Hopefully there is a mechanism in place that asks you first :smug:

"gu" looks for patches and prompts you if you would like to download it.

To me, it's actually just another sign of not so much plans for SH4 itself, but the code being developed and updated with features for future commercial stuff. I'm personally hoping these are signs of further commercial plans for this engine, beyond the add-on etc. :hmm:

Thanks for the info, without propper answers the conspiracy theories would be running rampart.

OMG UBI IS STEALING MY DETAILS!!! ;)
